Lawrence, Kansas Home Opinion story
Kansas, Utah projects parallel
By Mike Caron Saturday, September 6, 2003 Naturalist Terry Tempest Williams believes the South Lawrence Trafficway travesty closely resembles Legacy Parkway in Utah. Gov. Mike Leavitt wants that parkway built through Great Salt Lake wetlands. Williams loves the wetlands like a member of her own family. Road-builders and developers dismiss such feelings as mere sentimentality. In her book, "Refuge" (1991) Williams describes how she felt as both her mother and her beloved wetlands faced death. Anyone doubting Native American claims that the Haskell-Baker Wetlands are a part of their family might comprehend this cultural gulf better after reading "Refuge." The Utah Department of Transportation would replace wetlands paved for Legacy Parkway with lots of land and a new nature preserve. Dismissing skepticism from environmentalists, Gov. Leavitt declared the future wetland would be even better. Terry Tempest Williams calls this "greenwashing." Former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves, now the trucking industry's chief lobbyist, kept a low profile while the Kansas Department of Transportation pressed for a trafficway that could enormously impact how interstate haulers route their big rigs through this region. Graves, a close Republican ally of then National Governor's Assn. chairman Leavitt, likely borrowed the notion to "greenwash" the 32nd Street South Lawrence Trafficway route as good for Mother Nature.

If a program is advertising a very high success rate, please ask them what third party organization did their statistical studies. In-house surveys are prejudiced.
NEVER choose a program to “teach your child a lesson.” This is a common mistake many parents make. Many times, these are good children making bad choices. Harsh treatment and environment can enhance their anger as well as build resentment.
NEVER accept a program that is not accredited to educate your child, provides scant food and/or clothing and unsanitary living conditions. A visit to the program prior enrollment, if possible, is recommended. It is understandable that not every family has the finances or the time for the extra trip. With this, please be sure your research is thorough.

Catherine was 15. She'd stopped going to school. She wasn't a bad girl - no drinking, no drugging -
she just skipped out one day and never went back. Her wealthy parents were frustrated, but money couldn't buy peace in the home. At their wit's end, they decided to send her to a boarding school. Nobody foresaw the tribulations to come, when Catharine was hauled from her North Texas home 1,050 miles away to the rocky country of rural southwest Utah - nine months of what she and her family now consider hard time in a hard place. Catherine was sent to a boarding school run by an organization that had another school closed down
in the Czech Republic two weeks ago. Staff members were charged with child cruelty. Catherine tells a story that, if true, might amount to child abuse. But the school sees the way she was
treated as appropriate discipline for a troubled teen-ager. This is Catherine's side of the story: It was the day before her 16th birthday. Catherine, now 17 and married, said she was handcuffed by "escorts" in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen in Henrietta, Texas, where she had been dropped off by her stepfather.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
If you feel you qualify for damages or remedies that might be awarded in this class action please fill out the form below.

ST. GEORGE Ken Kay was doing his best to look unruffled.
At the headquarters of World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools, in an office complex the same rusty red as the southern Utah hills, the phone rang incessantly Friday.
On the line were parents and reporters from across the country, clamoring for news about the confusing events taking place at the Academy at Dundee Ranch in Costa Rica. Calls also flooded in from the ranch, as staff sent garbled messages about the fate of director Narvin Lichfield and the status of the school.
Overnight, Lichfield had been jailed on a variety of charges related to the ranch's management, capping a tumultuous week that began when some students fled the school at the prompting of Costa Rican officials.

Public Forum Utah Politics Online Poll ... Religion Blumner: Supreme Court case holds high stake in church-state separation
By Robyn Blumner
ST. PETERSBURG TIMES

Vouchers are back before the U.S. Supreme Court, and this time the court has the opportunity to demolish whatever it left standing of the wall separating church and state.
Last year, by a 5-4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a punch in the stomach to anyone who cares about keeping taxpayers from paying for proselytizing, by upholding a school voucher program in Cleveland. The program gave tax money to parents who chose to send their children to private sectarian schools, among other options. Now the court has taken a second voucher case, Locke vs. Davey, to be heard next term, and the stakes are even higher much higher.
As Rob Boston, a spokesman at the public interest group Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, told me, the Davey case flew under the radar until making it to the high-court docket. But the case has the potential to shift the legal ground on church-state separation so tectonically that what was once patently prohibited may now be required.
While the court in the Cleveland school voucher case said the Constitution wasn't violated when vouchers were used for religious schooling, the Davey case asks the court to consider whether states have a constitutional obligation to provide scholarships for religious training when offering similar aid for other types of educational pursuits.
