129 KU students donated their spring break to service work nationwide
LAWRENCE More than 129 University of Kansas students spent their spring break, May 17 through 21, volunteering in KU's Alternative Breaks Program. KU has one of the largest Alternative Breaks programs in the country with 20 spring break sites. The program was established in 1994 by a group of students who traveled to El Paso, Texas, to work with immigration regulations. More than 900 students, including 129 this spring, have participated in Alternative Breaks. Alternative Breaks allows students who apply and take the class "Special Projects in the Community" to travel in groups of six to eight to sites across the United States to perform service work. The class focuses on the three aspects of service learning: education, direct service and reflection. Students learn more about their sites through past participant panels, guest speakers and research. The groups also participate in a weekend break service trip within Kansas to prepare themselves for their weeklong trip. When students return from their trips they participate in a reorientation service project to apply their experiences to their own community.

SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE
LOGAN A northern Utah computer science teacher is setting up a programming lab that lets his students learn more for less money.
Russell Weeks, a member of the math department at Logan High School, has removed the traditional operating system from his computer programming lab and replaced it with a free Linux-based program.
"We had some concerns about the cost of Microsoft and having the flexibility of changing what kind of software you want to run," Weeks says. "We've been talking about doing this for some time, so we just decided to drive off the cliff."
That cliff is the line between what computer types call proprietary software and open-source software. Proprietary software must be bought, licensed and upgraded regularly. Windows XP and Mac OS X are both proprietary. Linux, and versions of Linux like Red Hat and SuSE, are free, flexible and often more powerful.
Logan High students have adjusted well to Linux.

Alternative Methods of Education in Utah
The field trip to Utah featured a variety of models and systems of education, including (1) education and employment preparation available in a public, alternative high school and adult education center, HORIZONTE Instruction and Training Center, (2) Salt Lake Community College (Redwood Road Campus), (3) Clearfield Job Corps Center, and (4) Weber Basin Job Corps Center. The field trip also included meetings with Robert Gross, Executive Director, Department of Workforce Services to discuss Utah's consolidation legislation for JTPA, Job Service and AFDC; and with local youth policy makers, practitioners and business leaders. Utah has a highly urbanized population85 percent of the state's population is in the Wasatch corridor, an area 15 miles wide and 80 miles long. Most of the state is either desert or mountainous, with only 4 percent of the land devoted to farming. The economy has moved from a primary focus on mining and processing natural resources to greater diversification encompassing high tech industries. State unemployment is at 3 percent or less. In recent years, Salt Lake City has experienced great diversification of cultures and demographics as people have immigrated to the area. According to Salt Lake Public School Superintendent Darlene Robles, currently there is a major divergence between the cultural, racial and ethnic and backgrounds of the teaching staff and the student population in the public schools. (The city's school population is 32 percent minority.

Plan B - An alternative route to college
By Nidzara Pecenkovic Published: Wednesday, December 3, 2003 Time out.
Attending college has not only become a norm, but also a necessity for many in today's competitive job market. Still, plunging head-first into the college experience while still wearing that high school graduation cap may not be the best route for everyone.
"Many high school and college students reach a point  where they realize that another year of school or work is not the right way for them," said Robert Gilpin, founder of Time Out Associations-an organization that offers consultations to teens wishing to take time off from school.
That's not the case for U freshman Maja Mikanovic, who knew where she was headed since she was very young.
"I've known that I was going to college since kindergarten," said Mikanovic, who is finishing her general requirements and planning on attending graduate school.
She, like so many other students, is simply going with the program-finish high school, go to college, choose a major, study some more and get a job in the real world.
