Royal praise for deserving cause

Not many organizations in the world can boast of a royal patron, and it is rare for an entity in South Carolina to be so honored. The International Primate Protection League of Summerville deservedly has such a longtime supporter. Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, sent his greetings on the 30th anniversary of the founding of the charity, which combats the illegal trafficking in primates, including monkeys, lemurs and apes, and operates a sanctuary for rescued animals. "I am delighted to have this opportunity to offer my warmest congratulations (to the League) and my special congratulations to its founder, Dr. Shirley McGreal," he writes. "The League can look back with much pride on its very considerable achievements ... most primate populations around the globe are in a better state thanks to its activities." The prince also commented on the bravery of Dr. McGreal and her supporters in challenging the illegal capture and trade in primates. "This is a very dangerous business and it takes real courage to collect evidence, track smugglers and bring illegal dealers to justice," he wrote. Dr. McGreal tells us that she has met Prince Philip, who is president emeritus of the World Wildlife Fund, many times at wildlife conferences.

SEATTLE_Discovery Channel Canada has joined forces with Woodland Park Zoo to document the transfer of 10 confiscated endangered Malayan sun bears to U.S. zoos. Beginning May 11, Discovery Channel Canada will accompany staff from Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo on a 70+ hour journey to the Sepilok Forest Reserve in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, to document the transfer of the sun bears to zoo officials. The bears come from the Sepilok Rehabilitation Center and will be relocated to eight accredited U.S zoos. The documentary about the project is set to air in Canada in January 2001. This is only the second time that the Malaysian government has allowed these highly endangered bears to legally leave the country under a long-term loan granted by the Sabah Wildlife Department. The bears will be placed in the eight accredited U.S. zoos under the sun bear Species Survival Plan (SSP) that seeks to enhance the genetic diversity among the bears at zoos in North America. Cheryl Frederick, the North American coordinator of the sun bear SSP says sun bears are a "number one candidate" for extinction because of their rapidly shrinking numbers in the wild, habitat depletion, and the increasing popularity of all bear parts for use in traditional Asian medicines and as gourmet food products. Sun bears cubs have endearing personalities and are often exploited as part of the wildlife pet trade in Southeast Asia; an adult bear is usually dangerous and expensive to keep. Such bears are turned over to the Wildlife Department and become permanent captives since re-released bears often become nuisance animals and are killed by villagers. Because of their secretive nature in the wild, study of sun bears has been difficult.

DETROIT ZOO TO FREE ELEPHANTS: Animals going to a refuge
Director's bold decision aims to give sensitive creatures better life
May 20, 2004 BY HUGH MCDIARMID JR.
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER The Detroit Zoo will become the nation's first major animal facility to give away its elephants solely on ethical grounds. Winky and Wanda, the latest in an 81-year-old tradition of pachyderms at the zoo, will be sent to one of two U.S. refuges this summer or early fall. The decision to send them away comes amid a nationwide push to provide better care for elephants, widely considered to be among the Earth's most intelligent creatures. They form strong social bonds and have a powerful need for physical and intellectual stimulation. In the wild, female Asian elephants like Winky and Wanda typically roam 30 miles a day, form lifelong and unique friendships with members of their herds and mourn for their dead. In captivity, they live in unnatural climates, develop physical problems such as chronic arthritis and exhibit psychological problems related to boredom and stress.

Bear leaves her hard life behind for fun at the zoo
November 20, 2002 BY BILL LAITNER
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER After being rescued from a circus cage in Puerto Rico, Baerle the polar bear arrived Tuesday night at Metro Airport. The flight followed an 18-month battle to spring a pack of the bears from a life of maltreatment. The 532-pound female who landed at 10:15 p.m. at the airport's FedEx terminal "looks really good," said Scott Carter, Detroit Zoo's curator of mammals. Riding in the zoo's unheated trailer "is going to feel nice for her," Carter said. The bear left Puerto Rico in 90-degree heat and high humidity, said officials traveling with the bear. The zoo's new polar bear slept much of the eight hours she was in the air. The newcomer was scheduled to get dog food and fish upon her arrival at her new den, officials said. The zoo already has two males and five female polar bears. After a 30-day quarantine standard for the Detroit Zoo's new arrivals Baerle, a roughly 17-year-old female originally from Manitoba, Canada, will roam the zoo's Arctic Ring of Life exhibit. She will be delighted by the zoo's 4 acres of pools, ice and rocks, said Jane Ballentine, spokeswoman for the American Zoo and Aquarium Association in Silver Spring, Md.

"LARGE" ANIMAL COLLECTION ?
Although we don't have many large-in-size animals we do have many animals. And, while our mammal and bird collections are modest we really stand out with the other taxa. How big is our fish There are 18 zoos with larger fish collections, 3 zoos with same size collections, 69 zoos with smaller collections, and 51 zoos with no fish. Thus, only 13% of zoos have larger collections than us (or we're larger than 85% of other zoos). Our fish collection is larger than the combined collections of the following zoos: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Lincoln Park, Detroit, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. They all have no fish! How big is our invertebrate collection? There are 10 zoos with larger collections, 2 zoos with same size collections, and 139 zoos with smaller collections. Thus, only 7% of zoos have larger invertebrate collections than us. Our invertebrate collection is larger than the following big zoos combined: Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Philadelphia. Because they all have none! How big is our reptile collection? There are 25 zoos with larger reptile collections, 11 zoos with same size collections, and 115 zoos with smaller collections. Thus, only 16% of zoos have larger reptile collections than us. Surprisingly, our reptile collection is larger (number of species and specimens) than the following big zoos: Phoenix, San Francisco, Miami, Lincoln Park, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Kansas City, Buffalo, Cleveland, Washington Park, Pittsburgh, and Milwaukee.

Zoo boosts security; 4 probes begin
By Raja Mishra and Farah Stockman, Globe Staff, 9/30/2003 With recaptured gorilla Little Joe safely locked away in a holding pen, police yesterday demanded that Franklin Park Zoo officials quickly upgrade security at the popular gorilla exhibit and refused to rule out putting the restless primate to death in order to protect the public. ADVERTISEMENT Four separate investigations were launched into zoo security and management following the startling escape of the 300-pound ape, who bolted out of the gorilla pavilion Sunday, attacked two people, ambled off the zoo grounds, and shocked residents by showing up at a bus stop on nearby Seaver Street. Zoo officials sought to reassure the public that the zoo could be safely visited and future gorilla escapes averted. They announced that they would add security cameras in the gorilla area and hired independent zoo security consultants to conduct a review. State and city police officials must sign off on any new security plan. Little Joe, who spent much of the day eating fruit and watching television yesterday, will remain locked up until the new security measures are in place, as will the other five gorillas that share the habitat with him, said zoo officials.
