February 18, 2004 After a 44-hour journey from the United States, 18 rare mountain bongo antelopes emerged from their shipping crates and set foot on their ancestral homeland of Kenya. It may have been one small step for the bongo antelopes, but a giant leap toward the survival of their species. The January 30 homecoming was four decades in the making. Veterinary teams and animal welfare workers are poised to go to the aid of the zoo animals left in Baghdad as soon as travel restrictions are lifted. "Not a lot is known about the status of the animals, although more is being learned each day," said David Jones, director of the North Carolina Zoo. Zoo professionals originally thought there might be several hundred animals at El Zawra, the city's main zoo, but now believe the number may be only several dozen. "It seems like only the big cats and some of the larger animals, like bears, survived. A lot of animals were stolen and quite possibly eaten during the looting," he said. "That certainly occurred in Kabul, Afghanistan, where a number of those animals were taken and put in the pot. We've had reports of camels wandering around; they'll be ok, they can just nibble on whatever's around." Jones, who has considerable experience working in the Middle East, is coordinating fund raising and relief efforts in the United States under the auspices of the American Zoological and Aquarium Association (AZA). The AZA performed a similar role for the Kabul Zoo in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban.

Halt Elephant Captures For US Zoos!
Elephant Cruelty Must Not Be Tolerated

Dear America,
Please help me to stop this atrocity. Email the zoo authorities below politely demanding greater heart and intellect regarding the tragic decision to capture, import and imprison wild, socially bonded African elephants for U.S. zoos, as well as to "DISCARD" older captive, socially bonded elephants that have lived at the zoos for over 20 years. Following is a copy of my email to the zoo officials explaining everything, and providing web links to more information. Also contact the Swaziland officials at the end of this message who also have the power to stop this inhuman cruelty.
Elephants feel and think and love just like us. They're already endangered, and these sickening acts need to stop. Thank you to all feeling individuals who take action with me against this animal cruelty.

LOS ANGELES - A coalition of animal rights and wildlife preservation groups claimed this week that had blocked - at least temporarily - two U.S. zoos from importing African elephants from a Swaziland preserve.
The San Diego and Tampa, Florida zoos surrendered permits granted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to import the 11 African elephants after the agency discovered discrepancies on their permit applications, agency spokeswoman Pat Fisher said. The elephants had been expected to arrive in mid-May or June but their arrival probably will now be delayed while the zoos apply for new permits, said Timothy Van Norman, chief of Fish and Wildlife's branch of international permits.

How Pandas Reach U.S. Zoos and Why They're Needed Posted by Jill Mateo on 2003 May 08 (Thursday) : 12:39 PM
from the dept.

The arrival of Le Le and Ya Ya at the Memphis Zoo this week brings thenumber of giant pandas in the United States to nine, spread across fourzoos. It's not easy getting them here. Because pandas are highly endangered, international treaties forbid their trade for commercial purposes. In orderto bring a pair of pandas into the United States, each zoo has to acquire apermit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and develop a highlydetailed research plan. More than 80 separate studies are being conducted bythe four U.S. zoos, according to a recent survey by the American Zoologicaland Aquarium Association (AZA). Each zoo has a particular research focus. Read more from National Geographic

"Repackaged" Wild African Elephant Import to U.S. Zoos Challenged in Federal Court
U.S. FWS Set to Issue Illegal Import Permits over Objections of Leading African Elephant Researchers and Conservationists Washington, DC A coalition of conservation and animal advocacy groups will file suit today in U.S. District Court to invalidate U.S. Fish and Wildlife (FWS) permits authorizing the illegal import of 11 juvenile African elephants taken from the wild in Swaziland to be put on display at the San Diego Zoo and the Lowry Park Zoo of Tampa. On July 9, the FWS issued a "record of decision" indicating it will issue the permits on Friday, July 11. The conservation coalition which includes the Born Free Foundation, Born Free USA, The Elephant Alliance, the Elephant Sanctuary, In Defense of Animals, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Animal Protection Institute, Animal Welfare Institute, Animal Legal Defense Fund and San Diego Animal Advocates maintains that the permits violate the U.S. Endangered Species Act, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), and the National Environmental Policy Act.

Appeals Court Declines to Stop Shipment of Young African Elephants from Swaziland
Elephants Taken from Wild to Be Confined to Small Enclosures Forever
Washington, DC Today the United States District Court of Appeals denied an emergency appeal for a temporary stay to prevent the San Diego Zoo and Lowry Park Zoo of Tampa, FL from immediately importing eleven wild African elephants from their homes in Swaziland. The members of the Save Wild Elephants Coalition are saddened by the fate that awaits the young elephants, two of whom are pregnant. The elephants will be taken from their home in Swaziland, where they have lived on more than 7,000 acres, and will now be confined to two 2.5-acre lots in San Diego and Tampa. This importation sets a dangerous precedent and opens the floodgates for the importation of threatened species that are protected by national and international laws and treaties. Leading wild African elephant researchers and habitat experts, including Cynthia Moss, Joyce Poole, Keith Lindsey and others, have condemned the import of these elephants highlighting the devastating consequences this import will have on the individual elephants, on those left behind in Swaziland, and on African elephants in general.

U.S. Zoos Launch Major Effort to Import Wild Elephants Faced with early deaths, unsuccessful captive breeding programs and the prospect that their elephant "collections" will die out over the next 50 years, U.S. zoos have launched a major effort to restock by importing young elephants from Africa and Asia. Zoos condemn elephants - many captured from the wild - to a life of captivity under conditions that do not come close to approximating life in the wild for these complex and intelligent animals.
IDA has been at the forefront of efforts to stop the zoos' import plans so that endangered and threatened elephants remain with their families in the wild where they belong. These efforts have included a successful lawsuit to prevent the Six Flags amusement park company from importing two baby Asian elephants to a Northern California amusement park. here to read more about the elephant capture.

This list was compiled from the International Species Information System, 26 Dec, 2001. (Some inaccuracies resulting from reporting delays are unavoidable.) I am in the process of contacting each of these facilities to verify their holdings. Please check back often for updates. The ISIS listed several Zoos that haven't exhibited hummingbirds for several years, which I discovered when I contacted these facilities. This suggests that the demands of caring for these birds is so high that many zoos elect to eliminate their exhibits. If any visitors to this page have more recent or complete information on the following zoos, or any additional zoos with living hummingbird exhibits, I would greatly appreciate their sending me the information. Thank you.

It once was the largest zoo in the Middle East. The Baghdad Zoo had more than 600 animals before the American invasion. In 2001 it had some 1.5 million visitors. Saddam closed it for renovation in 2002 and it was intended to reopen in April 2003 after a $50 million facelift. During Operation Iraqi Freedom on 19 March 2003 there was fierce fighting between the Iraqi Republican Guard and the 3rd Infantry Division in the area. Mortar rounds and tank released many zoo animals. But the main damage was caused later, when looters came through the zoo and stole all the animals that wouldn't eat them. The exotic birds were probably the first to go. The birds and other exotic animals are probably being smuggled to collectors in Europe or the US. The zoo falls into what is known as the “green” zone, an area that contains most of Saddam Hussein’s city palaces and government departments, and which is under heavy US security. As of May 2003 there were about 50 animals, mostly big cats and other carnivores which had been collected at the Baghdad Zoo from four other collections, one public and three private, which had been identified from around the city. American civil affairs soldiers and engineers are helping rebuild the zoo. All zoo employees have returned; the US military is paying them until the interim government stands up. Veterinarians from around the world are coming into Baghdad to help the Iraqi docs. The 10th and 94th Engineer battalions sent welders, plumbers, carpenters and earthmovers to the zoo to help rebuild the cages and take down some of the trees felled by the fighting.

NEWS PROJECTS EDUCATION GET INVOLVED ... EXTRAS U.S. Zoo Import of African Elephants Challenged SAN DIEGO, California - Charging that the San Diego Zoo and the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida plan to import 11 wild African elephants from Swaziland in violation of U.S. and international endangered species laws, an international coalition of wildlife conservation and animal protection organizations has sent formal notice to the zoos, demanding that they surrender the federal permits authorizing the imports or face legal action. The notice, sent on March 26, challenges the import of seven elephants to
San Diego and four to Lowry Park. The 10 to 12 year old elephants are protected by both the U.S. Endangered Species Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The imports would mark the first time in over a decade that African elephants will be removed from the wild and sold to U.S. zoos for exhibition. Elephants currently at San Diego zoo The zoos want the young elephants for U.S. captive breeding programs that will ensure a future supply of elephants - particularly baby elephants, who are extremely popular with zoo visitors - for public exhibition, the coalition says. These captive bred elephants are not intended for reintroduction into the wild. While the San Diego Zoo is paying the modest sum of $85,000 for seven elephants, and the Lowry Zoo is paying $48,000 for four, this is an enormous amount of money in Swaziland.
