  • The data covers the 51 states of the United States in addition to the U.S.-administered territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Data on U.S. imports are not directly comparable to those on U.S. exports. The U.S. Census Bureau classifies imports by customs district (port of entry) and does not classify them by state total. Cargo, however, may land in a customs district in one state to be re-shipped to another state. Moreover, while data on exports is classified according to industry (two digits), data on imports is classified according to commodity groupings (four digits). Exports and imports are sorted in descending order in terms of values for the first half of 1999 (1999Q2). For each state, the boxes show its rank relative to other states, in terms of exports to and imports from Egypt (by customs district) during the 1999Q2 period.

). In 1997, diabetes was the fifth leading cause of death in USVI ( ). Historically, the prevalence of diabetes has been lower among blacks in USVI than among blacks in the 50 states ( ). To characterize the prevalence of diabetes in USVI, CDC analyzed data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for 19992001 ( ). This report summarizes the findings from the analysis, which indicate that approximately 8.0% of USVI residents aged 18 years have diagnosed diabetes, and the prevalence of diabetes among blacks and Hispanics in USVI is comparable to that among blacks and Hispanics in the 50 states. To prevent the burden of diabetes and diabetes-related complications in residents and to improve the quality of life for persons with diabetes, initiatives in USVI should target all persons with diabetes. BRFSS is a state-based, random-digitdialed telephone survey of the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population aged 18 years in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and USVI. Response rates ranged from 75.5% in 1999 to 57.5% in 2001. BRFSS data for 19992001 were combined to estimate diabetes prevalence. Persons were classified as having diabetes if they responded "yes" to the question, "Has a doctor ever told you that you have diabetes?" Women reporting gestational diabetes only (i.e., <1.5%) were excluded. Persons with missing, refused, or unknown responses were coded as "missing." Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association of diabetes prevalence with USVI residents after controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education level, and body mass index (BMI). Values for BMI, which is the ratio of weight in kilograms to height in meters squared (kg/m

by Ivan Sache , 26 June 2002 St. Croix is the southernmost of the US Virgin Islands (this is the large island placed under the bird on the national seal).
The burgee of St. Croix Yacht Club is red with a white cross, which most probably recalls the Danish colonial past of the islands (the two main cities of St. Croix are Christiansted and Frederiksted) and a device which is most probably a colonial sugar mill (see for instance the flag of Guayama in Puerto Rico).

St. Thomas Yacht Club
by Ivan Sache , 9 July 2002 Established informally during the 1950s, the Virgin Islands Yacht Club was the first sailing organization on St. Thomas. Recognizing the need for a permanent yacht club with full member facilities, 15 far-sighted sailors in October 1964 contributed $1,000 each to form the Deck Point Corporation and founded the Yacht Club of St. Thomas, which changed its name to the St. Thomas Yacht Club in 1969. The current STYC flag mast is an 85-foot greenheart tree trunk, delivered by boat from Surinam. It replaced the original mast donated by the West Indian Company that had salvaged the spar from the 1920s-built schooner "Flight". STYC member Holmberg became the first Olympic medalist in Virgin Islands history, taking the silver in Finn Class at the 1988 Olympic Games in Korea. STYC is now 300-plus members strong, and has hosted since 1974 the prestigious International Rolex Regatta.

    St. Croix
Also Known As: Virgin Island White, White Virgin Islander, White Virgin Island The Virgin Island White breed is found in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. It is believed to have descend from the hair sheep of west Africa, but some feel it is a cross of the Wiltshire Horn and the native Criollo . Most of these sheep are white with some solid tan, brown, black or white with brown or black spots. Both sexes are polled, and rams have a large throat ruff. Mature Virgin Island White ewes and rams weigh 35 and 45 kg, respectively. Twenty-five Virgin Island White sheep, 22 ewes and 3 rams, were selected in St. Croix and imported into the U.S. by Dr. W. C. Foote of Utah State University in 1975. There were no records available on the animals. The criteria for selection were white color, lack of wool and average or better body size and conformation. These sheep were the basis of the present St. Croix breed in the U.S. The size of the ewes in the U.S. averages 119 pounds, while the rams average 163 pounds. St. Croix ewe's lambs show high fertility at 6-7 months of age. Lambing rate varies from 150 - 200% with two lambings a year not uncommon. They are being used in production and cross breeding studies in Utah, as well as California, Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. Purebred lines have been maintained, and as numbers increase, animals have been released to private breeders.

Welcome to the Study Abroad Links directory of academic year and semester study abroad programs in the Virgin Islands. SUNY New Paltz - Study Abroad in St. Thomas
Located in the Caribbean, the US Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States. It consists of an estimated 70 islands, and bays, three of which, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix are inhabited and of significant size. The fine white sand beaches, tropical flora and fauna, coral reefs and pleasant climate make the US Virgin Islands a popular tourist site. While English is the spoken language of the Islands, the blend of European and African cultures is evident in the culture, arts, language, and cuisine of the islands. The majority of the population is of African descent with Americans, Europeans, and people from other Caribbean nations making up the rest.
