British Virgin Islands There are parts of the British Virgin Islands so beautiful, you'd happily marry the closest iguana just so you could stay there forever. Think green hills, blue skies, tripped-out sunsets and beaches where the loudest noise is the donk of a coconut dropping on sand soft as a baby's bottom. Once the hideaway of buccaneers and brigands, the islands now attract a more salubrious yachting crew drawn by steady trade winds, well-protected anchorages and a year-round balmy climate. Tourist development has been limited by enlightened environmental policy. The islands have a thoroughly different character from their raucous neighbors. While the US Virgin Islands have pursued the tourist dollar, the British Virgin Islands have been keen to stay limey and out of the limelight. Introduction
If people are going to persist with an American dream, they may as well wake up to some of this. The three islands and 60-odd cays that comprise the US Virgin Islands include some of the most magnificent coast on earth and provides a taste of paradise and a bit of light relief to millions each year. Swanky resorts, an armada of cruise ships and a massive yacht charter industry hardly sound like the turf of the indie traveler. However, it is possible to travel the Virgin Islands - especially low-key St John - without joining Bud and Barbara on the poop deck with a pi±a colada in hand. Area: 135 sq km Population: Capital City: Charlotte Amalie People: African descent (75%), US mainland expats (13%), Puerto Rican (5%), Danish, French Language: English, Spanish; Castilian, French Religion: Baptist (42%), Catholic (34%), Episcopalian (17%) Government: unincorporated territory of the US Head of State: Governor Charles Turnbull

Publications The most musical animal under the sea is the male humpback whale, whose unique songs evolve over time. The waters surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands are home to some of our nation's richest and most beautiful coral reefs. The Virgin Islands National Park on the island of St. John, along with smaller marine protected areas, help protect these underwater gardens of coral, sponges and sea fans. But fishing, coastal development and other threats remain, and greater protection is needed. U.S. Virgin Islands The U.S. Virgin Islands sparkle with natural beauty, and are truly among the living jewels of the Caribbean. But their significance goes far beyond beauty. The beaches and reefs, along with stands of mangroves and seagrass beds, form an intricate, thriving, web of marine life. Virgin Islands National Park, new and expanded national monuments declared by former President Clinton, and other marine protected areas provide some protection to these valuable and spectacular places. But fishing, coastal development, and other human activities are nonetheless damaging coral reefs and associated ecosystems. Key Habitats Mangrove forests grow in shallow water along the shores. Their branches provide nesting space for birds, while their prop roots shelter young fish, invertebrates and a host of other species. Many reef fish species produce larvae that settle in the mangrove habitats, where they find plenty of microscopic food to eat and protection from predators. As they grow, the young fish migrate out to populate the reefs.

Sugarcane, produced by slave labor, drove the islands' economy during the 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1917, the US purchased the Danish portion, which had been in economic decline since the abolition of slavery in 1848.

    http://www.offshore-manual.com/taxhavens/USVirginIslands.html
U.S. Virgin Islands You don’t hear much about the U.S. Virgin Islands as a tax haven anymore because most writers today cover the better-known tax havens like the Channel Islands, the Bahamas, Bermuda or Cayman. But, the U.S.V.I. is a lot better tax haven than most people realize, offering tax incentives for U.S. companies and foreign investors alike. Foreign investors who do not seek residence or citizenship in the U.S. Virgin Islands or the United States can establish a tax-free U.S. Virgin Islands exempt company for their worldwide investments (other than investments in the United States or the U.S. Virgin Islands). Not surprisingly, the U.S. Virgin Islands have seen a rapid increase in the establishment of exempt companies. A foreign investor can use a U.S. Virgin Islands exempt company to hold his or her worldwide assets because such entity pays no taxes in the U.S. Virgin Islands, except for an annual US$1,000 franchise tax on its non-U.S., non-Virgin Islands income. The irony in all this is that the U.S. government offers tax haven status to non-U.S. citizens while denying the same tax breaks to its own citizenry. This is political hypocrisy at its worst! Why should a foreigner be offered freedom from current and future taxes, while citizens of the U.S. living on the mainland are excluded from the same policy?
