When we observe deeply, the fruit of our meditation will naturally transform into some kind of action
Thich Nhat Hanh in "Peace is Every Step". The Forum for Contemplative Studies is dedicated in general to the discussion and experiential exploration of contemplative awareness and its values. In particular it seeks to explore the confluence of depth psychotherapy with the world's contemplative traditions. Contemplative studies value being present, mindfully in each successive moment, with all of our experience, whilst cultivating an attitude of unconditional friendliness towards oneself and others. While the personal transformation this creates does not guarantee social change, we none-the-less believe that increased contemplative awareness may help individuals and groups find generous and more spacious solutions to life's problems. The Forum offers information about itself and received from many independent sources, for the general public, those in training, and for qualified psychotherapists, pursuing continuing professional development. This includes:

1. INTRODUCTION
The Internet provides a computer communication path that now spans over 300 countries and has an estimated 50 million users. With this explosive growth in recent years, have come many issues concerned with computer and data security. Not everyone on the Internet is your friend. Malicious users known as "hackers" are using very sophisticated tools for gaining unauthorized access to computer systems. Communication between other systems on the same network can also be monitored using "sniffer" programs. A program called a "Trojan Horse" can be installed that can trap and log user passwords. There are many other sneaky ways to break-in, steal information, and destroy or tamper with data. "The information he provided includes recent trends: the increasing damage caused by intrusions, more knowledgeable intruders, increased use of automated attack tools, and a 2000% increase in computer incidents handled by the CERT. Coordination Center since its establishment in 1988."
  • Computer Emergency Response Team
Recent statistics clearly indicate the danger of relying on passive security systems in today's increasingly interconnected world. According to the FBI, corporations reporting security incidents last year lost an average of $570,000 as a direct result, a 36 percent increase from the year before (1998 Computer Crime and Security Survey FBI/Computer Security Institute). And since the vast majority of security breaches are never reported, actual losses may be even higher

151. Nonnus
Summary and discussion of 12 articles published by R. F. Newbold from 19812001 on the 5th century Greek epic, The Dionysiaca, by Nonnus of Panopolis. At the Centre for European studies and general Linguistics, University of Adelaide.

Nonnus’ Dionysiaca: S ummary and Discussion of 15 articles by R. F. Newbold This site is devoted to a review of over 20 years of my research into the longest epic to survive from antiquity, Nonnus’ Dionysiaca. This 48-book poem is over 21,000 hexameters long, considerably longer than the works of the great forerunner that Nonnus sought to surpass, Homer, whose Iliad runs to over 15, 000 lines, and his Odyssey, over 12,000. Apart from his origin in Panopolis in Egypt, and being the probable author of a verse paraphrase of the St. John Gospel and probably living in the 5 th Century C.E, nothing is known of a poet who has been widely dismissed as unreadable and decadent. Yet he was an influential author in his day. His work offers many rewards and provides much to admire for those willing to lay aside requirements that an author be a master of plot and character, and who can accept that Nonnus is more about theme and motif. That he will ever be elevated to the canon of must-read authors from antiquity or western literature is too much to hope for but it is pleasing to see the recent appearance of the first monograph on Nonnus in English, and an attempt to consolidate the partial rehabilitation that has occurred in recent years as understanding of the author and his methods and aims have deepened (R. Shorrock, The Challenge of Epic.

The objectives of this project are to determine the interrelationships between the physical properties of ecosystems and the ecology of organisms in the generation of biodiversity, to measure objectively the resultant diversity and to produce operational concepts of biodiversity which are of general applicability and importance.

Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.
