Student and Exchange Visitors Program, or SEVP
on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website
The Immigration and Nationality Act provides two nonimmigrant visa categories for persons wishing to study in the United States. The "F" visa is reserved for nonimmigrants wishing to pursue academic studies and/or language training programs, and the "M" visa is reserved for nonimmigrants wishing to pursue nonacademic or vocational studies.
F-Academic Students and M-Vocational Students Requirements
Foreign students seeking to study in the U.S. may enter in the F-1 or M-1 category provided they meet the following criteria:
  • The student must be enrolled in an "academic" educational program, a language-training program, or a vocational program;
  • The school must be approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS);
  • The student must be enrolled as a full-time student at the institution;
  • The student must be proficient in English or be enrolled in courses leading to English proficiency;
  • The student must have sufficient funds available for self-support during the entire proposed course of study; and

Several national organizations provide extensive general information, statistics, and guidance for persons who are interested in studying abroad or professional who may advise such persons. Among them are: Institute of International Education (IIE) is the largest U.S. organization devoted exclusively to international educational exchanges, particularly at the postsecondary level. It provides statistics, publications, guidance, and links, and also cooperates with the U.S. government in administering several exchange programs, and operates several overseas offices. NAFSA: Association of International Educators provides useful information and resources to help plan a successful study abroad experience, as well as links to study abroad opportunities.

If you are going to the U.S. primarily for tourism, but want to take a short course of study of less than 18 hours per week, you may be able to do so do so on a tourist visa. Background Requirements
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Changes in U.S. immigration law, effective November 30, 1996, require that no alien may be issued an F-1 visa to attend a U.S. public elementary or middle school (K-8). Any alien who wishes to attend public high school (grades 9-12) in the United States in student visa (F-1) status must submit evidence that the local school district has been reimbursed in advance for the unsubsidized per capita cost of the education. Also, attendance at U.S. public high schools cannot exceed a total of 12 months. Please note that these changes do not affect other visa categories such as the J-1 exchange visitor program or the qualified school-age child of an alien who holds another type of nonimmigrant visa (i.e., A, E, H, I, L, etc.).

The San Diego Regional P.E.T. Center is one of the first dedicated PET scanners in San Diego County. We are committed to providing state of the art nuclear medicine imaging for diagnosis and staging of oncologic diseases including lung neoplasms, solitary pulmonary nodules, Hodgkins and non-hodgkins lymphoma, melanoma, esophageal malignancy, breast,colon cancer and other tumors.
PET cardiac imaging is equally beneficial in the diagnosis of ischemic heart disease and myocardial viability. Ask your cardiologist if pet imaging will help you.
PET brain imaging assists in the diagnosis of neurologic diseases and disorders including Alzheimer's and refractory seizures.

Thank you for your interest in student employment with the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC). The DOC always looks to educational institutions to find people who have the skills needed to meet its future employment needs. Student employment provides an opportunity to earn money and continue your education, to train with people who manage the day-to-day business of the Federal government, and to combine your academic study with on-the-job experience. The following provides information on paid and unpaid student employment, and internship opportunities. STUDENT EDUCATIONAL EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
(PAID EMPLOYMENT
The Student Educational Employment Program provides employment opportunities to students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree seeking students taking at least a half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited high school, technical, vocational, 2 or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school. The program comprises two components: the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) and the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) Job opportunities under this program offer you temporary employment. Employment can range from summer jobs to positions that last as long as you are a student. These employment opportunities need not be related to your academic field of study.
