Dramatic U.S. 20th Century Health GainsStudy Reuters (www.reuters.com) (12/04/00) A new report in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics indicates that there were significant public health gains during the 20th century. The report, prepared by researchers at Johns Hopkins and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that a better standard of living, immunization programs for children, and better medical practices and medications have resulted is substantially improved health for Americans. While a person born at the beginning of the last century was only expected to live about 49 years, life expectancy at the end of the century was 76.5 years. Furthermore, the rate of death dropped nearly 75 percent between 1900 and 1998, with the leading causes of death shifting from infectious respiratory diseases like tuberculosis and pneumonia to heart disease and cancer.

Journal of Social History
Winter, 2001 by Bela Tomka
Beside the comparative study of Hungarian family history, which might offer us a better insight into the characteristics of the 20th century Hungarian family development, an interest in the problem of European social integration as described by Kaelble will constitute the basis of the present investigation. At the same time, our perspective differs from his in that we mainly concentrate on the relation of certain important areas of 20th century Hungarian family changes to Western European trends, whereas he examined the evolution of West European societies and their specific features as compared to other industrial countries. We will primarily endeavour to answer the following questions: Have 20th century family changes in Hungary converged to or diverged from Western European trends? In which periods and in which areas of development can convergence and divergence be observed? Another important research problem is, present in many comparative studies, that of what is compared to what, i.e. what is regarded to be the unit of comparison. Hungary as the unit of comparison is given in this case, but it is not so evident which countries are counted as Western European. When selecting the Western European countries into the sample an effort was made to include ones that produced similar socio-economic and political development in the 20th century, as Kaelble has done in his seminal study. Thus among the countries analysed, beside Norway and Switzerland the present EU member states are included with the exception of Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Luxembourg. Nevertheless, no attempt is made to claim that other countries could not have been considered for inclusion in the sample, but this was hindered by very practical reasons, the unavailability of sources.

An emerging country at the end of the 19th century, Argentina possessed exceptional comparative advantages that were efficiently developed for more than 50 years, but the economic policies adopted after World War II contributed to the end of the Argentine "miracle". These often extreme policies largely accounted for the slowdown of growth, because they contributed to the relatively low levels of saving and investment, prevented efficient allocation of the factors of production and limited private productivity. Though Argentina was practically an empty country in the 19th century, measured and targeted state economic intervention beginning in the second half of the century enabled it to take advantage of a favourable international environment. Argentina exported agricultural products, was well integrated in the world economy and received major flows of goods, labour, capital and technology. Liberal policies towards immigration and foreign capital provided the country with the resources that were indispensable for its development. At the same time, a model education policy made it possible to integrate the foreign immigrants and contributed to social cohesion. Above all, this policy clearly explains the growth in Argentine productivity. It increased labour skills and mobility, as well as contributing to the widespread and rapid diffusion of the foreign technology that was being developed at the same time.

Exploring the History of Women Inventors
by J.E. Bedi Teachers, download the companion guide for the "She's Got It!" video.
Note: The guide is an Adobe Acrobat (PDF) file. If you don't have the free Acrobat reader, you can download it now. Guide file size: 2.7 MB; approx. download time: 10 min. (based on 56k modem speeds) Jerome Lemelson, the independent inventor who founded the Lemelson Center, was concerned with the public profile of invention in the United States. Ask a young person to name 5 rock stars or superstar athletes, he'd often say, and you will get a full and immediate response. Ask that same teenager to name 5 inventors, and it's likely he or she would get stuck after coming up with Thomas Edison. How likely, then, is it that any American of any age could rattle off the names of 5 women inventors? Yet, the history of women inventors is as long as that of their male counterparts. Sybilla Masters, for example, is often named as the first woman inventor in the American colonies. In 1715, the English courts awarded a patentalbeit, to her husband Thomasfor a method of making cornmeal from maize"a new invention," the patent clearly stated, "found out by Sybilla his wife." She was not unique; the following century boasted many women inventors. For example, Mary Kies earned a patentin her own namein 1809 for a way of weaving straw that was put to use in the New England hat manufacturing trade.
