College of Literature, Science and the Arts Graduate Program Overview
Our goal is to engage graduate students and faculty in individual and collective interdisciplinary investigations of historical thought, and in research on the historical experiences of humanity in different time and places. We expect our graduates to become outstanding teachers at universities and colleges throughout the world, and to make innovative and enlightening contributions to the study of history, whether as teachers, researchers, public historians, or independent scholars. We recognize that it can be a challenge to figure out the application process, admissions procedures, and specific program requirements for all of the various graduate programs, so we've created this "Frequently Asked Questions" section to help make the quest for information a little bit easier. Trends in U.S. Climate during the Twentieth Century
by Thomas R. Karl Richard W. Knight David R. Easterling Robert G. Quayle The Authors all serve on the scientific staff of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), in Asheville, North Carolina. Thomas Karl , who has also been active in defining an international Global Climate Observing System, serves as the Center's Senior Scientist. Robert Quayle is Chief of the NCDC Global Climate Laboratory and David Easterling and Richard Knight are staff meteorologists. The NCDC is the nation's repository for all current and past meteorological records. H as the climate of the United States changed significantly during the century that is about to end? In what ways and by how much? Have national trends emerged that agreeor perhaps disagreewith what is expected from projections of global greenhouse warming? In this review assessment we focus on the climate history of the conterminous U.S. (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) for the century that is about to end. We first examine the observations that conventionally describe weather and climate and next, the now pressing question of whether observed changes in this country are consistent with predictions of anticipated, global greenhouse warming. In doing so, we need always remember that while we are among the largest countries in terms of land area, the U.S. covers but about 2% of the surface of the Earth; what happens meteorologically within its borders is but a sampling of that amount drawn from an interrelated, global system. While we have a U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), its mission is necessarily global because climate itself is a global phenomenon: the atmosphere respects no national boundaries. At the same time, it is local weather conditions that most affect us, individually or collectively. Any response to the question of impending climate change must first be weighed in light of regional and national impacts, in this country or any other.

Provides history of patient rights in the 20th century as well as the rise of advocacy groups and case studies on the mentally ill.
    http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~ianj/HR/patients/pa_japan.html
Patients Rights in Japan Patients rights and informed consent have been topics of controversy for both the medical and legal professions in the 1990s. Perhaps predictably the lawyers have been urging the incorporation of rights based standards into both the legal framework and medical practice while doctors have sought to ensure that when this occurs it does not undermine their professional autonomy and authority. We start with a description of the background to medical practice up to and including the Pacific War. Then we will briefly consider the structure of the health care system as it was reconstructed after the war and look at the rise of patient's rights advocacy groups. Next we will present as case studies the development of attitudes to informed consent and the care of the mentally disordered. Finally we will comment on current trends and possibilities for the future. The Background I wa Ninjutsu nari - Medicine is beneficence There is an idealised view of the doctor in pre-modern Japan as an individual who practised medicine out of a generalised feeling of benevolence towards his fellow men not charging any fee to his patients. Grateful patients might make suitable gifts to the doctor but, in theory at least, neither side would see it as a commercial transaction. Traces of this attitude remain and it is still common for patients to give their doctors more or less valuable presents as expressions of gratitude despite the efforts of MHW to suppress the practice. In Edo Japan doctors were private practitioners of medicine whose 'craft' meant they were assigned to the third of the four groups that made up mainstream society - warriors, farmers, craftsmen, merchants. The gratuity that patients paid for their 'free' service was called the
