Although gall bladder surgery brings in significant revenue for hospitals and physicians,
the research clearly shows that simple dietary changes can result in
dramatic and immediate health improvements for people with gall stones.
All of this without the risks and side effects of gall bladder surgery.
Unfortunately, once gall stones have been diagnosed by a physician,
the research on the effectiveness of dietary interventions is not conveyed to the patient. Information for this article was located from the

Cholecystitis (Gallstone Inflammation)
Evidence of an Environmental Disease
The local Melbourne physician said she would die without the surgery. He said removal of her gallbladder was the only way we could stop the painful attacks in her upper abdomen. The patient was the 80 year grandmother of a close friend of mine in Melbourne Beach, Florida. She was suffering pains on a regular basis, however the research shows the risk of her dying from the anesthesia alone was over 1% - too great as far as we were concerned. What other options did we have with this common disease known as Cholecystitis? To find out as much as we could regarding gallstones and the gallbladder removal epidemic, we spent four days at the University of Florida Medical Library researching the medical journals for information. The first thing which shocked us is how common this disease really is: Each year over 500,000 people are admitted into hospitals for gallbladder disease. Two-thirds of them are treated surgically. In studies of 60-90 year people, 60% of the women and 30-50% of men were found to have gallstones. The other surprising factor was how the incidence of the disease differs dramatically among populations. A large study in India found North Indians had gall stones seven times higher than South Indians. The only difference between the two groups was that the North Indians were found to consume 8-19 times more saturated fats in their diet. South Indians were found to use unsaturated fats and consume larger amounts of rice.

Pillar of Fire is the second volume of Taylor Branch's magisterial three-volume history of America during the life of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Branch's thesis, as he explains in the introduction, is that "King's life is the best and most important metaphor for American history in the watershed postwar years," but this is not just a biography. Instead it is a work of history, with King at its focal point. The tumultuous years that Branch covers saw the assassination of President Joh...

Desert War: The North African Campaign 1940-1943, Comprising Mediterranean Front, a Year of Battle, the End in Africa

If you are interested in the War in North Africa this is the read for you. It is absorbing and well written with a flow of a correspondent who is constantly moving to different parts of the front. I love and would recommend anything by Moorehead, but this is still a special book because he lived most of it. It is not however a history of the war. There are large chunks of the war that are not written about, time frames where whole battles are not directly refered to. That is because Moorehead...

Course Description Mondays, 4:30 - 7:15 pm, HBC 020 This course is a survey of rhetoric as a discipline in the 20th century. Although we will be partly concerned with coverage of the major thinkers, this course will be organized according to three broad questions, questions we will address and explore by means of our readings this semester:
  • Why and how did rhetoric re-emerge as a viable subject in the 20th century?
  • How have various thinkers conceptualized the scope of rhetoric?
  • How does rhetoric function as a method, theme, and/or theory in conjunction with more concrete cultural topoi (such as gender, ethnicity, and technology)?
Our goal in this course is not to arrive at final answers for these questions, of course. The tentative answers for these questions will affect each other, and raise yet more questions, all of which will give us some sense of the complex histories and theories that surround rhetoric as a discipline. No. 6: 20th Century Climate: Not hottest or most turbulent
A new review of research on climate over the last millennium by a leading scientific think-thank in the US reveals that climate in the twentieth century was neither the hottest nor the most turbulent. This is causing a stir in US scientific circles and in the US Congress.
Hot and turbulent-the claims
The International Panel Climate Change (IPCC)-which produced the reports upon which the Kyoto Protocol is based-claims that the twentieth century was the warmest century on record, the 1990s the warmest decade, and 1998 the warmest year.
The fluctuations in weather in the past few years have led Green groups and insurance bodies recently to argue that this turbulence is unusual and is caused by global warming attributable to man-made emissions of greenhouse gases.

Scientists Determine Age of New World Map
“Vinland Map” parchment predates Columbus’s arrival in North America
Scientists from the University of Arizona, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Smithsonian Institution have used carbon-dating technology to determine the age of a controversial parchment that might be the first-ever map of North America. In a paper to be published in the August 2002 issue of the journal Radiocarbon , the scientists conclude that the so-called “Vinland Map” parchment dates to approximately 1434 A.D., or nearly 60 years before Christopher Columbus set foot in the West Indies. “Many scholars have agreed that if the Vinland Map is authentic, it is the first known cartographic representation of North America, and its date would be key in establishing the history of European knowledge of the lands bordering the western Atlantic Ocean,” said chemist Garman Harbottle, the lead Brookhaven researcher on the project. “If it is, in fact, a forgery, then the forger was surely one of the most skillful criminals ever to pursue that line of work.”
The "Vinland Map," possibly the first map showing the New World, is currently housed in Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. >
