So we've talked to friends, striven to remember what shaped us, informed us, what was innovative, path-breaking. Here's our reckoning. This first instalment is of non-fiction, first published in English. They are presented here in alphabetical order by author. The books can be purchased online from amazon.com by simply clicking on the book's title or image. CounterPunch will receive a modest donation from the sale of any book purchased through the "channel" of our website. (Or visit other online bookshops, such as Powells .) Many of the books are out of print (a sad commentary in its own right). For those titles, we have provided a hyperlink to one of our favorite websites, Advanced Book Exchange . John Henrik Clarke 20th Century Griot
By Marimba Ani (Read at the Luncheon Tribute to Prof. John Henrik Clarke, Saturday, September 13, 1983.) T he life of John Henrik Clarke exemplifies those values upon which the victorious movement of our people depends. His work and his character together have created a symbol that inspires greatness. Born in rural Union Springs, Alabama, he was reared in Columbus, Georgia at a time when American racism was not subtle, but overtly oppressive. His intellectual curiosity and initiative were resources which allowed him to circumvent the authorities In a society which denied to people of African descent library privileges which those of European descent enjoyed. This proved to be the beginning of a productive life in which there would be countless hours spent In libraries all over the world. In these early days research into the African past was indeed an uphill struggle for several reasons:
  • 1) As a Black man, he was denied access to most facets of the scholarly community
    2) Africa herself was not considered worthy of serious study, (except perhaps by anthropologists in service to their colonial sponsors; but certainly not worthy of the attention of an historian)

20th Century U.S. History Sites
Introduction To become better acquainted with American history in the twentieth century, students and teachers can begin by browsing through the 1900s timeline from Archer Audio Archives. By the end of 1999, most major news sites had released their "century in review" or "highlights of the millenium" pages resulting in an overflowing amount of related information on the Internet. The 1900s timeline can spark ideas for key phrases to use while conducting a search or perusing the site maps on these larger sites. Users seeking basic statistics (population, unemployment, life expectancy, average salary, etc.) can go to Kingwood College Library's American Cultural History: The Twentieth Century page. Along with the statistics, they offer sweeping overviews of each decade with links to historic documents and information on events, people, art, architecture, literature, fads, fashion, entertainment, education, and more. For further links, the SCORE (Schools of California Online Resources for Education) site provides a neatly organized, annotated link directory pertaining to U.S. History and Geography: Continuity and Change in the 20th Century
