Adorno FAQ
Dialectic of Enlightenment , which created the world's first theory of mass-culture. Though this text often gets the most attention in academic circles, it needs to be read in conjunction with two other breakthrough texts Adorno wrote in the 1940s, namely Minima Moralia , a collection of short essays and aphorisms, which sketched out a whole new theory of monopoly capitalism, and powerfully anticipated the micropolitical struggles which would erupt two decades later, and Philosophy of Modern Music , Adorno's landmark analysis of the musical modernisms of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern, which gave a Marxist account of atonal music precisely where Walter Benjamin provided the first Marxist account of poetry in the latter's study of Baudelaire (and where, still further afield, Lukacs provided the first Marxist analysis of the novel). The whole idea of cultural studies, radical sociology, and many of the themes of deconstruction and the post-structuralisms, namely that reading is political, that works of art and aesthetic interpretation have powerful effects on each other, and that texts express genuine social conflicts, owes a tremendous debt to Adorno's pioneering work here.
think through the total system of the 1960s (if you think this is easy, just try it sometime). Thirty years ahead of the fact, Adorno somehow sensed, no doubt due to Germany's paradoxical position as the contested borderzone between the Cold War superpowers, that the East and West really were converging into a single monstrous Ueber-system (or what we call nowadays neoliberalism).

During the 1960s, the consensus of the medical-scientific community is that the beryllium standard is too stringent but that its retention provides some "unknown, but obviously adequate" margin of safety.
On the medical side, debate continues on the cause of the chronic form of the disease: immunological based versus dose-response based.
Brush and Kawecki Berylco Inc. (KBI, formerly The Beryllium Corp.) work together to develop a broad-reaching program of distributing information and warnings about the hazards of beryllium. This cooperation to provide warning information continues in the following decades.
First documented case of CBD at Elmore.
Dr. Lloyd Tepper (a BCR physician), together with Dr. Harriet Hardy and Richard Chamberlin (an industrial hygienist working with the BCR and other beryllium programs), publishes a monograph entitled "Toxicology of Beryllium Compounds." It is "an attempt to assemble in one volume what is currently known of the toxicology of beryllium and its compounds." It states that "the level of 2 micrograms is generally held to be conservative, probably overly conservative."
A workshop on beryllium is held at the Kettering Laboratory. The purpose of the workshop is to bring together a wide variety of professionals involved in beryllium. A series of presentations is made at the workshop. One presenter noted that "[t]he use of a standard of 2.0 mg per cubic meter has been shown to be relatively safe and is probably conservative." Another presenter suggests increasing the threshold limit value (TLV) to 5 micrograms

Notice the sandals and stripped ankle socks. Major changes occurred in boys' fashions in the period from World War II through the 1960s. Boys moved from short pants and knickers to long pants. By the end of the period only very small boys were dressing up in short pants. Two major stalwarts were introduced, jeans and "T"-shirts, staples which are now worn around the world. American boys wore jeans in the 1950s, both for play and school. By the 1960s, however, shorts for casual wear and play began to increase in popularity.

Suits
Suits were less commonly worn as casual styles became increasingly accepted as families moved to the suburbs. Suits change from large lapels in the 1940s to very narrow lapels opular in the 1960s.
The Eton suit for little boys gained great popularity during this period. The Eton jacket was a short, collarless jackrt, in various materials. It was usually worn with short grey pants.
Various types of sports jackets gained specia; populatity in the 1950s. Searsucker suits appeared in the 1920s, but became especially popular in the 1950s.

Notes
  • After the war, the United States and the Soviet Union expressed their mutually adversarial stance through a Cold War, in which deterrence, rather than direct military intervention or actual combat, served as a primary means. In sharp contrast to the economic devastation and loss of human life of its allies Great Britain and the Soviet Union, the U.S. emerged from World War II in excellent economic shape. Continuity of the prewar and wartime growth and opportunity proved delusory, particularly for female factory workers and African American veterans. The 1960s were a decade of social conflict between conformity and individuality, tradition and innovation, stability and disruption. By the 1970s, the counterculture had been assimilated with mainstream U.S. culture; however, a call to tradition, which emerged not as a return to community and self-sacrifice but as a pursuit of wealth, dominated the 1980s. In response to the challenges of literary theory and the explosive growth of the information age, two literary developments emerged: the nonfiction novel and metafiction.

Ireland is a country whose sons and daughters hold her dearly above all, and it is evident in your great country as in others, that their love does not wither because the soil beneath their feet is foreign soil. St Patrick planted more than the shamrock when he came to Irelandhe planted in the hearts and minds of her people a spiritual fire that nothing can extinguisha fire which still burns brightly in the hearts and minds of Irish men and women and those of Irish descent the world over. Langston Hughes Stood Up for Rescuing Jews from the Holocaust
by Dr. Rafael Medoff and Benyamin Korn
Too few Americans are aware of the Langston Hughes Centenary being commemorated this year, but Hughes's name was back in the headlines last week, with the release of previously unknown transcripts from Senator Joseph McCarthy's hearings at which Hughes and others were relentlessly questioned.
The now-revealed transcripts recorded a series of secret, closed sessions that Senator McCarthy held prior to his public hearings on alleged Communist infiltration of the U.S. government. In one of those closed sessions, Hughes was grilled by McCarthy's staff about whether his book Scottsboro Limited, "follows the Communist Party line."
Scottsboro Limited, published in 1932, was a collection of four short poems and a play, in verse, about the nine black youths falsely accused of raping two white women in Alabama. The book was used to raise money for the youth's legal defense.
The Scottsboro case highlighted the emerging political alliance between blacks and Jews, an alliance in which Hughes would play an important role that is not well remembered today.

Crime and Punishment in America: 1999 NCPA Policy Report No. 229
    October 1999
    Executive Summary
Serious crime in the United States continued to fall in 1998. Whether measured as a rate (number of crimes per capita) or in absolute terms, every category of violent crime and burglary decreased from 1997.
    • The overall rate of serious crime fell to a 25-year low.
    • The murder rate dropped by 8 percent from 1997 and finally slumped to the rates of the late 1960s, even falling below the average murder rate during this entire century.
    • The rates for rape and aggravated assault fell by 5 percent each, for robbery by 11 percent and for burglary by 7 percent.
    • The actual number of murders reported in 1998 was the lowest in more than two decades.
The National Crime Victimization Survey, conducted annually by the Justice Department since 1973, also found the lowest crime rates since the survey began. This survey - which measures crimes by asking randomly selected people whether they have been victims - usually finds a higher rate because fewer than four of every 10 crimes are reported to the police. Not by coincidence, the likelihood that a criminal will be punished for a serious crime and the amount of time a criminal is likely to spend in prison are higher today than they have been since the 1970s.

Chronology of National Missile Defense Programs
The debate surrounding U.S. development and deployment of a national missile defense (NMD) system is not new. From the humble beginnings of the V-2 rocket in 1944 to the land, air, and sea-based NMD systems of tomorrow, this chronology will give you a sense of the history of the debate.

September 8, 1944 The V-2 rocket is first used by Nazi Germany in an attack on London. July 4, 1945 The Army submits its first recommendations to develop defenses to protect against ballistic missiles. One of the plans calls for the use of timed anti-aircraft artillery to shield London from incoming V-2 missiles. Another of the plans involves the use of an "energy beam" for defending against V-2 missiles. March 4, 1946 Project Thumper and Project Wizard are initiated by the Army Air Force to develop interceptor missiles capable of destroying incoming projectiles traveling at altitudes reaching 500,000 feet and traveling at 4,000 mph.
