We will explore ways to effectively integrate the learning in each discipline with the whole curriculum and make it meaningful to the lives of children. More specifically, this course will utilize an integrated approach to curriculum in which social studies content, literature, and language arts skills are central. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking skills will be integrated into social studies and literature content that is based upon meaningful lessons and experiences of the audience.

Time and Tests were her Enemy ...
O nce upon a time, there was a Social Studies teacher. She was a hard worker, but time was her biggest enemy. Television was no help; her students’ attention span was short. And they felt overwhelmed by the amount of material they were expected to cover. When one student missed class, he felt lost and often wanted to give up. She would not let him. When the state test rolled around, her students were prepared. She figured they would ace it. They did not. They knew the material inside and out, but they could not prove it on the test. Everyone sighed: “They don’t ask questions the way you do, Mrs. Brown.” By June, she was exhausted, and the principal was not happy. Something had to change. She and the students needed something, and that something was success. There was no quick fix; this would take work.

What the Sokal Hoax Ought to Teach Us
The pernicious consequences and internal contradictions of "postmodernist" relativism
Paul A. Boghossian
From the Times Literary Supplement , Commentary. December 13, 1996, pp.14-15 In the autumn of 1994, New York University theoretical physicist, Alan Sokal, submitted an essay to Social Text , the leading journal in the field of cultural studies. Entitled " Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity ," it purported to be a scholarly article about the "postmodern" philosophical and political implications of twentieth century physical theories. However, as the author himself later revealed in the journal Lingua Franca, his essay was merely a farrago of deliberately concocted solecisms, howlers and non-sequiturs, stitched together so as to look good and to flatter the ideological preconceptions of the editors. After review by five members of Social Text 's editorial board, Sokal's parody was accepted for publication as a serious piece of scholarship. It appeared in April 1996, in a special double issue of the journal devoted to rebutting the charge that cultural studies critiques of science tend to be riddled with incompetence.

OAS_AD('Top'); Public Schools Fail to Teach History, Study Charges Tuesday, September 09, 2003 OAS_AD('Middle'); That's the theme of a provocative report about U.S. civics and history education that is drawing praise from leaders and groups whose views span the ideological spectrum. Albert Shanker Institute search Based on studies of text books, research by authors and other reviews, the report contends students get a distorted account that their country is irredeemably flawed. Schools should offer a more positive tone but should avoid propaganda or patriotic drills, the report says. Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars search Over the past 30 years, the percentage of people under 25 who vote has dropped 15 percentage points, the report says. It cites other signs of apathy and disengagement, such as when children touring Washington said they knew Memorial Day as "the day the pools open." Hoover Institution search "It's important that students understand not only our flaws and failings, but also the degree to which the United States was really the first modern democracy and the degree to which it has inspired democrats around the world," Diamond said. "It's a call for balance; it's not a call for purging from the history books honest criticism of our failings." The report has drawn support from Republicans and Democrats, left-leaning and right-leaning think tanks, teachers unions and school administrators. Those who have signed on include former President Clinton and Jeane Kirkpatrick, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and U.N. ambassador under President Reagan.

    Significant Points
    • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
    • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
    • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

    Significant Points
    • The educational attainment of social scientists is among the highest of all occupations.
    • Anthropologists and archaeologists, geographers, and sociologists will experience average growth, but slower-than-average growth is expected for historians and political scientists because they enjoy fewer opportunities outside of government and academic settings.
    • Competition for jobs will remain keen for all specialties because many of these social scientists compete for jobs with other workers, such as psychologists, statisticians, or market and survey researchers.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The major social science occupations covered in this statement include anthropologists, archaeologists, geographers, historians, political scientists, and sociologists. ( Economists market and survey researchers psychologists , and urban and regional planners are covered elsewhere in the Handbook Research is a major activity of many social scientists, who use various methods to assemble facts and construct theories. Applied research usually is designed to produce information that will enable people to make better decisions or manage their affairs more effectively. Interviews and surveys are widely used to collect facts, opinions, or other information. Information collection takes many forms, including living and working among the population being studied; performing field investigations; analyzing historical records and documents; experimenting with human or animal subjects in a laboratory; administering standardized tests and questionnaires; and preparing and interpreting maps and computer graphics. The work of specialists in social science varies greatly, although specialists in one field may find that their research overlaps work being conducted in another discipline.
