Using Literature to Teach Geography in High Schools
by Susan E. Hume
February 1996 Traditionally, the high school curriculum has been rigidly compartmentalized. Yet, linkages between disciplines in the curriculum increasingly are being made, such as the connections of English to U.S. History courses in many high schools. Another connection may be English with World Geography courses. Students of every ability level could benefit from exploring the interrelationship between these two disciplines. In this digest, the term literature refers to novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and folk tales. It consists of narrative as opposed to expository forms of writing that are found in traditional textbooks, reference books, and news articles. By no means, however, should literature be the sole tool used to teach geography or other subjects of the social studies. Rather, each form of narrative and expository writing has its place in the social studies curriculum. WHY USE LITERATURE TO TEACH GEOGRAPHY? Advocates present three main reasons for using a literature-based approach to teach geography.

Great Baltimore Fire of 1904

Most people know about the Great Chicago Fire and Mrs. O’Leary (later found innocent), but did you know that a fire swept through much of the business section of Baltimore a hundred years ago destroying more than 1500 buildings? This fire pointed out the need for a standardized fire hydrant because firefighters from three states came to assist, but most of their hoses wouldn’t fit on the Baltimore hydrants. Compare images of 1904 to current times on the interactive map. There is a print version that presents the entire interactive journey in one document. The site requires Java and the two film clips are in Windows Media Video format.

The Smithsonian Institution created a site for A.P. History students and teachers focusing on the use of artifacts in understanding history. Artifacts tell stories, connect people, capture moments, and reflect changes. Two themes are presented: the Nation Expanding and Consumerism. There are essay questions, artifacts, and documents for students to consider. The Teacher’s Guide has student handouts and guides for teaching how to study and learn from artifacts. Ask your parents if they had any of the lunchboxes on display in the consumerism section and be sure to check out the Barbie pages.

There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning valuesstandards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values.
Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996).
Prominent educators recommend that certain widely held values or virtues should be at the core of the school curriculum for the purpose of systematically developing the character of students. They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through "perspective-taking, moral reasoning, thoughtful decision-making, and moral self-knowledge" (Lickona 1993, 9). And they also urge the use of personal modelsheroesin history, fiction, and current events to exemplify and encourage emulation of particular virtues or desirable traits of character, such as honesty, civility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, self-restraint, compassion, tolerance, fairness, respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, responsibility for the common good, and so forth (Leming 1996; Lickona 1991).

Social studies educators are living and working in the middle of a revolution the emergence of the Internet as an integral part of education. This Digest summarizes ways that classroom teachers can combine the Internet with other instructional resources and methods. It is a basic guide for the novice and a checklist for the more experienced Internet user. The web sites and ERIC resources cited in this Digest and included in the references provide the "next steps" for exploration and implementation. Back to the Table of Contents

Using Primary Sources
Teachers have long recognized the value of students reading accounts of historical events written in the words of those who were there. Excerpts from James Madison's journals kept during the Constitutional Convention is a typical example of the primary sources that teachers use to explain how the Constitution was developed and how it is interpreted today. But the Internet opens the way to an enormous range of resources. For instance, imagine reading Tacitus's eyewitness account of the burning of Rome, including the descriptions of "terrified, shrieking women" and "helpless old and young" fleeing the conflagration, or Corporal E. C. Nightingale's frightening memories from on the deck of the battleship Arizona in 1941. Both of these are available to teachers and students at [http://www.ibiscom.com], one of several commercial web sites that provide superb resources for teachers and students.

2001 Summer Expedition - South Africa
July 26, 2001 thru August 18, 2001 by Ronnie Feder I was part of the Africa trip with TEACH. I loved so many things it is hard to select one...the animals and evening safaris were exciting and fun, and meeting some of the students at the Wildlife Center was a great opportunity for a mini cultural exchange. I think for me, the most meaningful experiences were the visits to schools and the opportunity to talk with teachers and even more, visit with the students. I gained a tremendous amount from the summer experience. I am only beginning to recognize many of the things.

2001 Summer Expedition - China
July 1, 2001 thru July 15, 2001 by Naima Freitas My experience in China will affect the way I teach my high school students about agriculture in the future. I now realize that the study of agriculture requires not only an awareness of plant, animal and soil science but also of environmental science, technology, history, economics, politics and culture. Though my students generally focus their studies on agriculture and environmental science within the United States, I think that it is educationally valuable to examine agriculture in both the U.S.A. and in China. The trip affected the way I think about learning. It reinforced the idea that people learn more effectively through experience. My trip to China not only taught me about agriculture in China: the concerns, research and techniques involved, but also about the culture. It was great to be able to see the actual research taking place. It was especially meaningful because I was able to speak with the scientists and researchers involved to learn about their rationale and hopes.

David Bishai Dept. of Population and Family Health Sciences Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Presented at the NICHD panel, "Visions of the Future: A Town Meeting on New Directions in Population Research" Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America March, 2000 Introduction Before presenting a list of fruitful areas for future work in population studies, I want to spend a few moments setting up a historical and intellectual context for such an exercise. A year numbered "2000" is as good a time as any to take stock and to wax philosophical. How Can We Crowd and Still Be Kind? In the middle of the last millenium, Christopher Columbus found something. What he found permitted our ancestors to put off solving one of the great unsolved problems in population studies. Robert Frost puts it best in the final verse of his poem, "America is Hard to See". Had but Columbus known enough He might have boldly made the bluff… But all he did Was spread the room Of our enacting out the doom Of being in each other’s way And so put off the weary day When we would have to put our mind On how to crowd but still be kind.

PROJECT FUNDER:
The National Center for Research on Cultural Diversity and Second Language Learning . (This Center was one of 21 research centers funded by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education.)
This five-year research project investigated ways in which classroom teachers could promote students' academic language competence and social studies knowledge in their second language, develop and implement social studies lessons that are sensitive to the cultural and educational backgrounds of language minority students, and help these students adapt to the school-based culture. From 1991-1995, we had examined American history and world studies in middle school classrooms in multiple sites across the nation to identify which academic language and culture demands of this content area pose difficulties for these students and which strategies lead to student success. The classroom-based research was accomplished through observations, interviews, and the development of exemplary lesson plans and curricula that integrate language learning with content objectives. One component of this project, focused on the academic discourse in social studies classes, by analyzing samples of the language competence students need to succeed in the classes from textbooks, assignments, classroom interaction, and teacher talk. Another part of the research investigated ways to make language minority students familiar with common activities that occur in social studies classes, such as role playing, research reporting, and cooperative learning. Overall, the project identified promising practices that effective teachers use to help language minority students participate actively in class, develop English proficiency, and learn about American and world cultures while sharing information about their own.

4-28-03: Historians/History Coaches Shouldn't Teach History
By Diane Ravitch
Ms. Ravitch is Research Professor of Education, New York University. HNN FUND RAISING DRIVE
If you like the service HNN provides, please consider making a donation.
Testimony Ms. Ravitch gave on April 10, 2003 in support of a bill by Sen. Lamar Alexander to promote the teaching of history.
History education is one of the most important responsibilities of our schools. Unfortunately, for many years, the teaching of history had a low priority. In the 1970s and 1980s, history in many schools was replaced by a mishmash of ill-defined social studies courses that taught things like group decision-making, consumer education, and social science concepts. In 1983, for instance, the New York State Education Department intended to replace the chronological study of history with a thematic approach in which events were merged with big concepts and taught without regard to cause and effect. A popular outcry prevented that from taking place. In many states, history was submerged into social studies programs, and states adopted social studies standards that ignored chronological history. Civics too suffered when it was separated from the study of American history. The study of history has been making a comeback in recent years. Ten years ago, only four states-California, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Texas-had history standards to guide teachers. Today, after ten years of popular support for academic standards, about half the states now have history standards.

Social studies textbooks used in elementary and secondary schools are mostly a disgrace that, in the name of political correctness and multiculturalism, fail to give students an honest account of American history, say academic historians and education advocates.
"Secondary and college students, and indeed most of the rest of us, have only a feeble grasp of politics and a vague awareness of history, especially the political history of the United States and the world," says Paul Gagnon, emeritus professor of history at the University of Massachusetts.
Most textbooks, produced by a handful of giant commercial publishers, are exposing generations of children to cultural and history amnesia that threatens the very basis of American free institutions and liberties, warn leading historians who are calling for better-defined, more rigorous state teaching standards.
"Less than half knew the Supreme Court could decide a law's constitutionality," he said in the Albert Shanker Institute study titled "Educating Democracy: State Standards to Ensure a Civic Core."
