Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry Hawaii and the Pacific Islands are national and global treasures of biological diversity. The wide geographic range and thousands of isolated island ecosystems across the Pacific have led to an extremely high diversity of flora and fauna. As the most isolated archipelago on earth, 90% of Hawaii's 10,000 native species are endemic. On some islands climatic gradients range from mangrove swamps to desert to rain forest to alpine communities in the span of less than 20 miles. The forests of the pacific are sources of freshwater, subsistence, wood, recreational, and aesthetic and cultural values. Just as the scale of diversity on the Pacific islands is befitting that of a continent so are there a disproportionate number of threats to the island ecosystems. Among the most significant of threats are invasive species. Through our research and technical outreach programs we are improving our understanding of Pacific Island forests, the threats to their sustainability, and approaches to their restoration.

    Government Expeditions
During the 1850s, the U.S. government sponsored an extensive series of expeditions designed to gather information on the vast new territories that had been acquired in western North America. In addition, a major oceanic expedition was sent to the North Pacific, a region of increasing importance to national maritime interests. Together, these expeditions returned vast quantities of natural-history material to the Smithsonian Institution, where they formed the foundation for the collections. Spencer Baird saw in these expeditions an unparalleled opportunity to obtain collections from largely unexplored regions. He succeeded in soliciting the support of the officials in charge of these various surveys and provided equipment and supplies, as well as instructions on how to collect and preserve natural history specimens. For example, "Memoranda in reference to Natural History Operations" and "Instructions to Collectors" issued by the Smithsonian Institution were written by Baird. He also recruited naturalists to accompany the surveying parties, and many young men received their training and established their reputations by publishing reports on the results of the collecting expeditions.

(Amata Coleman Radewagen) On February 27, 2004, the Republican Party of American Samoa by acclamation nominated Aumua Amata Coleman as its candidate for American Samoa's delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives in the general election to be held November 2, 2004. Citing her long experience as a member of the House Majority Leadership Staff, her service as a member of the President's Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and her tenure as a senior member of the Republican National Committee, American Samoa's Republicans have asked Amata to employ her vast background and qualifications in seeking a new level of service to the people, as American Samoa's elected representative in Washington. On October 24, 2003 Amata became the first Pacific Islander ever chosen as " Outstanding Woman of the Year " by the National Association of Professional Asian-American Women (NAPAW). Such women as Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch, Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink of Hawaii and Judge Ida K. Chen of Philadelphia previously have held the coveted distinction. Amata also delivered the keynote address to NAPAW's annual conference. Appointed by President Bush in 2001 as a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders , where she chairs the panel's Community Security Committee. Amata is the only Pacific Islander on the 15-member body, which advises the president on Asian American and Pacific Islander issues. The Commission is in the final stages of issuing a landmark report on the health care needs of America's Asian and Pacific Islander communities, including those in the Pacific territories and Freely Associated States.

Source: World Encyclopedia of Flags The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands was a United Nations trusteeship in the North Pacific administerd by the United States. The territory consisted of islands originally controlled by Germany and ceded to Japan following World War I. Following the second World War, the islands were placed under U.N. control (1947). The trust was dissolved when the last island group, Palau, approved a free association trade agreement with the United States in 1980. The stars in the flag represented the Mariana Islands Marshall Islands Ponape Truk ... Yap , and Palau The flag was authorized by the U.N. High Commissioner and adopted by the Congress of Micronesia in July 1965. It became official on 19 August 1965. The flag has ceased to be used following the dissolution of the Trust. According to "The Flag Book of the United States" by Whitney Smith (1975), The flag design was first hoisted on 24 October 1962, but was not officially adopted by the Congress of Micronesia, as the legislature of the Trust Territory was called, until 1965. The six stars represented the districts of Yap, Truk, Ponape, Marianas, Marshalls, and Palau.

This is the text of the 1886 Supreme Court decision granting corporations the same rights as living persons under the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution . Quoting from David Korten's The Post-Corporate World, Life After Capitalism (pp.185-6): In 1886, . . . in the case of Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company , the U.S. Supreme Court decided that a private corporation is a person and entitled to the legal rights and protections the Constitutions affords to any person. Because the Constitution makes no mention of corporations, it is a fairly clear case of the Court's taking it upon itself to rewrite the Constitution.
Far more remarkable, however, is that the doctrine of corporate personhood, which subsequently became a cornerstone of corporate law, was introduced into this 1886 decision without argument. According to the official case record, Supreme Court Justice Morrison Remick Waite simply pronounced before the beginning of arguement in the case of Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company

From the early 1800s to the late 20th century, Asian and Pacific peoples have played a vital role in the development of the United States and made lasting contributions in all elements of American society. The month of May is recognized as National Asian-Pacific Heritage Month. This year, as part of the celebration, we are showcasing the rich heritage of Micronesia by highlighting the islands' listed historic places. Join the National Register in commemorating just a few of the places where Asian and Pacific people have made history. Today, Guam remains a territory of the United States. In the 1970s, citizens of the old Trust Territory organized four new governments: the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the RMI, and the Republic of Palau. Of these, the Marianas are an American Commonwealth and the other three are in a unique relationship with the United States known as "Free Association."
