American Samoa American Samoa
, a group of islands in the mid-South Pacific, is located about 2,300 miles from Honolulu. American Samoa has a land area of 76 square miles and approximately 57,291 residents (est. 2000, U.S. Census Bureau), most of whom live on Tutuila. Since American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the U.S., its people are U.S. nationals who freely enter the U.S. An estimated 65,000 Samoans have migrated to the West Coast and some 20,000 live in Hawaii. The territory has an important tuna processing industry, and its capital, Pago Pago, has a great natural harbor with dry dock and port facilities. The local government is the biggest employer in American Samoa. Culture
The Samoan culture is strong and intact. The Faasamoa (Samoan way of life) is centered on the "aiga" (family), which consists of the immediate family and extended family members (maternal and paternal) such as grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. The family name holds special value in the hearts of Samoans and every opportunity is taken to keep that name in good standing within the community. The "matai" (chief) is the head of the family and has the final say on decisions that are made for the family and their land. Land in American Samoa is communally owned; therefore, it is up to the matai of the family to distribute the land among family members. Community hospitality is ingrained into the Samoan way of life with families commonly inviting guests into their homes.

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) , a chain of 17 volcanic islands, stretches over 375 miles north to south and covers a land area of 181 square miles. There are six inhabited islands, but most of CNMI's 69,221 (Census 2000, U.S. Bureau, IDB) people live on Saipan. Formerly a part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, CNMI opted in the 1970s to form closer ties with the U.S., becoming a commonwealth and a permanent part of the U.S. The people of CNMI are U.S. citizens. Tourism is a major industry and manufacturing is growing rapidly. Culture
Language

The Commonwealth has Chamorro, English, and Carolinian as its official languages. In the non-classroom setting, Carolinians more often can speak Chamorro than Chamorros speak Carolinian. It should be noted also that both languages have linguistic relations elsewhere. The Chamorro language is also spoken in Guam, a U.S. territory. The Carolinian language is linguistically related to languages in the outer islands of Chuuk, Yap, and the Southwest Islands of Palau.

THE LLMC SOURCEBOOK - Section 3 of 15, Page ii Technical Information Film formats All titles offered by LLMC are provided on 24x or 42x, 7m, diazo, negative-image, micro-fiche. Every fiche has a standard eye-visible header. Diazo film is utilized for consumer copies because LLMC believes, in common with the great weight of technical authority in the field, that that type film is best suited to withstand the more common hazards to which film is subjected in actual library use situations. Title control numbers Each title issued by LLMC is assigned a unique Control Number, which is provided in the final line of that title’s description. The corresponding microfiche for that title also carry this number, which can be used as a shorthand identifier for purposes of ordering and invoicing. Acquisition librarians may find his feature useful when ordering materials of this nature, since so many of the titles are remarkably similiar. Preservation alert Although LLMC strives to make its offerings as complete as possible, in some cases we may erroneously believe that a given title begins later or ends earlier than it actually does. In these cases we solicit corrections from the better informed. Most of the titles described herein are complete for the timeframe indicated. In a minority of cases, however, where there are gaps in LLMC’s runs, the missing pieces, volumes or years are described with particularity. Libraries, especially those which may be contemplating replacing their hardcopy with film, are encouraged to check these gaps against their hardcopy runs with the view to making any of the needed materials they may hold available for filming.

U.S. APPROVES $2 MILLION FOR PRIOR TRUST TERRITORY SERVICE By Bernadette H. Carreon For Variety KOROR, Palau (August 20, 2002 - Palau Horizon/Marianas Variety)-The U.S. House of Representative has included $2 million for the Prior Service Benefits Trust Fund in the fiscal year 2003 appropriation for the U.S. Department of the Interior, according to David Cohen, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs. The Prior Service funding benefits over 2,000 former employees of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which consisted of Palau, the Northern Marianas, the Marshall Islands and what is now called the Federated States of Micronesia. The Association of Pacific Island Legislature earlier urged the U.S. government to appropriate funds for the Prior Service Trust Fund. The U.S. had promised to supplement the $8 million initial funding it allocated for the Prior Service in 1986. Two years ago, the U.S. Congress appropriated $700,000 for the trust fund and reiterated its promise to further fund the program. However, Prior Service will soon run out of funds and its 2,250 members may no longer receive their checks.

AMERICA'S HALF-FORGOTTEN FORMER TRUST TERRITORY OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS By Colin Woodard UMAN, Federated States of Micronesia (December 27, 1999 – The Christian Science Monitor)-Sixty years ago, residents of this small tropical island had access to electricity, running water, paved roads, good schools, competent health care, and a regular ferry service to the main town on a nearby island of the Chuuk archipelago. But after 40 years as a U.S. trust territory - and another 15 years of U.S.-funded development - Uman has none of these things. The roads built by the Japanese before World War II have been reduced to slender footpaths. Japanese-era industrial machinery rusts in the jungles, and shrubs grow on the main dock. With no jobs and no future, young men drift to the district center, Weno, where many regularly drink themselves into a violent rage, then attack anyone or anything around them. The neglected, supply-starved hospital has such a poor reputation that even those seriously injured in attacks prefer not to be treated. All this in a nation of 130,000 that has received more than $1.3 billion in U.S. grants - $ 10,000 per person - over the past 13 years.
