At the same time Americans are unhappy about how much emphasis US trade policymakers place on commercial interests and overwhelmingly favor incorporating other priorities-protecting American workers, protecting the environment, preserving international labor standards-into the process of furthering trade. If necessary they are willing to slow the growth of trade if that is the only way to address these other priorities. Support for fast track (now called "trade promotion authority") is low, apparently because it signifies the increase of trade without addressing these other concerns. A majority of Americans believe US policy should ultimately support the goal of increasing trade. In an April 2001 Rutgers University poll, 64% expressed support for President Bush "reducing trade barriers to facilitate the import and export of goods". A January 2001 poll for the Congressional Institute found that a 53% majority favored "eliminating some of the barriers that exist to international trade, for example by reducing tariffs, in order to promote increased international trade;" only one in three (33%) were opposed. U.S. International Trade Commission Investigates Absormex's Alleged Infringement of Tyco Healthcare Patents for Absorbent Garments
    May 13, 2004: 3:02 p.m. EST
MANSFIELD, Mass. (PRNewswire) - MANSFIELD, Mass., May 13 /PRNewswire/ Tyco Healthcare Retail Group, Inc. announced today that the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has instituted a patent infringement investigation of the Mexican companies Absormex S.A. de C.V. and Grupo ABS Internacional S.A. de C.V. and their affiliate Absormex USA, Inc. Tyco Healthcare asserts that three of its patents are infringed by Absormex's manufacture of disposable diapers and other absorbent garments in Mexico that are imported and sold in the United States.
Tyco Healthcare sought redress before the ITC because of the speed in which a remedy may be obtained and because of the ITC's ability to prevent the importation of infringing goods into the United States. Tyco Healthcare also has filed a separate lawsuit in United States District Court, Central District of California, seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief for Absormex's alleged infringing conduct.
Tyco Healthcare is the world's third largest absorbent garment producer and has manufacturing facilities in King of Prussia, Pa.; Macon and Marietta, Ga.; Greenwood, S.C.; Waco, Texas; and Tijuana, Mexico. All of Tyco Healthcare's absorbent garment products are designed, developed and tested in the United States.
