"Geographers examine changing patterns of vegetation to study global warming; they analyze where ethnic groups live in Bosnia to help understand the pros and cons of competing administrative solutions to the civil war there; they map AIDS cases in Africa to learn how to reduce the spread of the disease." ~ Alexander Murphy "A discipline whose domains are 'space' and 'place' and anything that operates within them, or characterizes aspects of them, or flows among them people, water, beliefs, digital data can only be a vast and disparate one." ~Peter Monaghan "It is well known that geography is a small tree by any standard in the jungle of academia." ~ Daniel Sui "It's almost painful to contemplate how quickly an expensive book can become outdate, but the reality is that even the most carefully researched, beautifully written, solidly crafted geography book will need to be replaced every few years." ~ Susan Dove Lempke "It's a better time to be a publisher of arm-chair travel than traditional guidebooks. People don't stop reading when they stop traveling." ~ O' Reilly

A 95,000-acre (38,445-hectare) field artillery and missile base, it is the home of the U.S. Army Artillery and Missile Center. Fort Sill was named in memory of Joshua W. Sill, a Civil War general. The Wichita, Kiowa, Comanche, and other Native American groups were given homes on the reservation and trained in agriculture; Geronimo (who is buried in the Apache cemetery there), was imprisoned at the fort. The reservation was almost abandoned in 1904; it was revitalized by the establishment (1911) of a school that was to become the U.S. army's main field artillery training base. There are 48 designated historic sites in the Fort Sill area.

The Status of Geography in Higher Education in the United States
For: The INLT Plymouth Conference, January, 2001
By: Susan W. Hardwick, Department of Geography, University of Oregon, USA
    Introduction
The past decade has witnessed a revival of geography education in the United States. Based largely on the efforts of the national Geographic Alliance network, which continues to retrain social studies teachers to teach "good geography;" the identification of geography as one of the core subjects of the K-12 curriculum by national and state policy makers; and national efforts of professional organizations to enhance geography instruction at all levels, the field has enjoyed a major comeback in pre-collegiate classrooms and in higher education in the U.S. in the past ten years. This paper outlines major trends in geography education in higher education in the U.S. in the year 2000 with reference to the past half century of change. First, information about the specializations of various geography departments in the nation are compared with the research specializations of geography faculty who belong to the Association of American Geographers. Next, general requirements of graduating with a major in geography are discussed. This section of the paper is followed by an overview of geography as an integral part of "General Education" in today's higher education curricula. Finally, recent developments in teaching geography in higher education are listed. Links to referenced programs and projects are indicated throughout the text where appropriate as and aid to learning more about ideas listed in this very general overview discussed in my brief conference paper.

    GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE COLLECTION
Geography is a rich, diverse, and interdisciplinary field which has expanded beyond the traditional divisions of physical geography and human geography. While the scope of this collection is shaped by Library of Congress call number ranges, other collections with similar interests geology, engineering, and economics, to name a few supplement and enhance the Geography collection. The ultimate goal in our combined efforts is to fully support the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, the research needs of faculty across disciplines, and the general research needs of the university community. Toward this end, particular attention is given to acquiring monographs and periodicals which reflect the latest developments in the field. The Department of Geography coursework emphasizes traditional geographic theory, quantitative techniques, and environmental and policy studies. Four subfields within the discipline are given particular emphasis: energy-environmental systems and resource analysis; geography of development; remote sensing and geographic information systems; and biogeography and climatology. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the Graduate School (GRS) offers BA, MA, and PhD degrees in Geography. Interdisciplinary degree programs are available at Boston University through department faculty participation in the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, the African Studies Center, and the Center for Remote Sensing.

USGS Node of the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse
The USGS node of the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse is a component of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) . It provides a pathway to find information about geospatial or spatially referenced data available from USGS. The USGS node actually encompasses a distributed set of sites organized on the basis of the USGS's four principal data themes. The first, Geography, offers the familiar USGS topographic maps and other geographic products that have long been associated with USGS. These products typically are of general use across many disciplines for basemaps and other purposes. As Geographic Information Systems have come to play an increasingly important role in science, however, the biology, geology, and water disciplines also have produced important geographic data sets related to their themes. These thematic products are best found by discipline. Discipline Resources Available Geography Here, you will find links to, the National Map, topographic maps, orthophoto quadrangles, geographic names, satellite imagery and photo archives, and many other mapping products in digital and paper forms. Biology The National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) links diverse, high-quality biological databases, information products, and analytical tools maintained by NBII partners and other contributors in government agencies, academic institutions, non-government organizations, and private industry.
