From: "John M. Miller" <fbp@igc.apc.org NCC calls for disarming of civilians and the sending of UN monitors to East Timor Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches issued an appeal on February 11 for the disarming of civilians and the sending of UN monitors to East Timor. February 11, 1999 The Honorable Madeleine Albright Secretary of State U.S. Department of State Washington, D.C. 20520 Dear Secretary Albright: We are writing you to express our deep concern about the current situation in East Timor. We welcome the recent announcement by the Indonesian government that they may now consider independence an option for East Timor. However, reports that the Indonesian military has provided arms to residents of that territory and created para-military groups, are completely at odds with the framework of governance being discussed under United Nations auspices. We understand from reliable sources as well as via the media that the sense of insecurity and level of tension among the people of East Timor has increased and that potential for further violence is great. In order for the human rights of the people of East Timor to be preserved and protected and new arrangements for governance be explored in a climate of calm and careful planning, we believe it is important for the international community to take immediate action.

[NCCCUSA] JACKSON, Miss. - "We have great opportunities to do wonderful things for the people of God," declared the Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Hoyt, Jr., Nov. 6 at his installation as the National Council of Churches’ new President for 2004-2005. Dr. Hoyt, 62, of Shreveport, La., is Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church’s Fourth Episcopal District, comprising Mississippi and Louisiana. He is the first member of the historic African American C.M.E. to serve as NCC President since the Council was founded in 1950. He was installed along with other NCC officers during services at Anderson United Methodist Church in Jackson, Miss., as the NCC’s annual General Assembly, held in Jackson Nov. 4-6, came to a close. The meeting marked the end of one four-year program planning cycle (the 2000-2003 quadrennium) and the beginning of the next. Addressing those gathered, Dr. Hoyt pledged to "speak truth and righteousness in this land," to do so "with love and understanding" and to "continue to do all I can to make this organization all it can be."

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States of America
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. President:
We, like all Americans, kneel in prayer and remembrance for the tragedy and violence that obliterated the lives of so many people one year ago. As American religious leaders, we have sought during this year to listen, to learn, and to grow in our faith and compassion both for persons in our congregations and also for those many outside of our churches. We applaud your leadership in bringing peoples of disparate faiths together to worship, to mourn, and to move on boldly with our lives in a more caring fashion and with appreciation for the precious gifts of God given to all humankind. Today, however, we write out of concern that those same precious gifts may be damaged by actions being contemplated by our nation. We, leaders of American churches and church-related organizations, are alarmed by recent statements by yourself and others in the Administration about pre-emptive military action against Iraq for the expressed purpose of toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein. Understanding that Mr. Hussein poses a threat to his neighbors and to his own people, we nevertheless believe it is wrong, as well as detrimental to U.S. interests, to take such action.

Six-Principle Baptist is an historic denomination whose first congregation gathered in 1652 at Providence, Rhode Island. Within a short period of time Six-Principle churches were planted and conferences arose in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Soon, the General Six-Principle Baptist Association was formed which was the first Baptist association of any kind in America. Six-Principle Baptists have no ecclesiastically binding creed. They hold to the historic Baptist distinctive of Liberty of Conscience in matters of faith and practice. They believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour and accept the six principles found in Hebrews 6:1-2 as foundational concepts of faith and practice. Press Release U.S. Church Leaders Press President Bush on Problems Facing Christians in Israel and Palestine ~May 7, 2004~ (WASHINGTON, May 7, 2004) Fifty leaders of evangelical and mainline Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox churches and church-related organizations in the U.S. today delivered a letter to President Bush asking for a full understanding of “the crisis in the Holy Land confronting Christian Palestinians, Christian institutions, and those who wish to visit the birthplace of Christianity.” Stating that the “churches have directed their concerns to the Israeli government but to little avail,” the church leaders appealed for the President’s intervention to help restore the normal functioning of Christian institutions in Israel and the Occupied Territories and claimed that “it is generally acknowledged that relations of the churches and these institutions with the Israeli government may be the worst they have ever been.” The letter addressed the church leaders’ concerns specifically regarding the effects of the separation barrier being constructed by Israel, taxation issues that may force some church institutions to close due to the removal of their longstanding tax-exempt status, and “the denial and delay of visas, by Israel, for clergy and church personnel result[ing] in understaffed seminaries, churches, hospitals, education and other institutions.”

NEW YORK, NY-The annual assembly of the United States member churches of the World Council of Churches (WCC) took place February 27 and 28 in Cleveland, Ohio, at the invitation of the United Church of Christ and with the participation of the Protestant and Eastern Churches. Representing the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America was Very Rev. Fr. Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General of the Prelacy and pastor of St. Sarkis Church, Douglaston, NY.
The two-day assembly was marked with worship services, fellowship, and meetings where the problems and challenges facing the U.S. churches and the international WCC were discussed.
Some of the issues that formed the morning session included: The rapid growth of member churches and how this proliferation has affected the WCC administratively and economically; the ever-increasing pluralistic context of religions, cultures, and values and whether or not this is a threat to the existence of the churches in the U.S.; Is the proliferation a cause for more or less participation in ecumenical activities?; and the current challenges facing the U.S. churches in realizing the global fellowship that is the goal of common understanding and vision proposed by the World Council of Churches.

Cf. WCC Press Release, PR-03-08 of 3 February 2003-02-05
Three U.S. church leaders have joined 22 church leaders in Europe and the Middle East in opposing war in Iraq and calling for a peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The meeting of church leaders in Berlin today (February 5) was convened by the World Council of Churches (WCC) in consultation with the Conference of European Churches (CEC), the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA (NCCCUSA) and the Middle East Council of Churches, hosted by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).
The leaders deplored the fact that the United States and other nations "regard war as an acceptable instrument of foreign policy" and rejected the aims of the U.S. to use a "pre-emptive military strike" to remove the Iraqi regime. They also called on the government of Iraq to comply with United Nations demands that it destroy all weapons of mass destruction.
U.S. leaders who added their names to the statement are the Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, general secretary, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA; James Winkler, general secretary, General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church, USA; and the Rev. Dr Rebecca Larson, executive director, Division for Church and Society, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, USA.

Suspect in gay bars bomb plot pleads innocent in Fla. court
Friday, December 05, 2003 MIAMI (AP) — A Christian fundamentalist who was trained as an Army Ranger pleaded innocent last week to bomb and weapons charges in an alleged plot to blow up abortion clinics, gay bars and churches he deemed disloyal. Prosecutors said 35-year-old Stephen John Jordi described himself as a terrorist and planned a bombing spree across the eastern United States. He allegedly was on the brink of carrying out the plan when he was arrested Nov. 11. Authorities said that on the day of his arrest, Jordi and a government informant bought gasoline cans, flares, starter fluid and propane tanks, and the informant sold Jordi a pistol and silencer. Marc Seitles, Jordi’s attorney, argues that Jordi repeatedly said he did not want to do anything illegal and that the informant offered money to Jordi’s family and a plane ticket to Jordi so he could protest outside the Florida prison where abortion-provider killer Paul Hill was executed.
