US Churches and Climate Change
By Rev. Bill Somplatsky-Jarman, Presbyterian Church (USA) Support for ratification of the Kyoto Protocol among US religious groups picked up momentum at an interfaith conference on October 25-26 in Columbus, Ohio. Over 100 people from 10 states gathered at the invitation of the Eco-Justice Working Group of the National Council of Churches. Participants adopted campaign strategies for their home states including religious delegations to their senators, media outreach on climate issues and placement of a television advertisment narrated by poet May Angelou. The TV spot lists a toll-free number people can call fro more information. The conference was the second phase of a renewed effort supporting the Kyoto Protocol. In August, 24 heads of religious communions sent a joint letter to President Clinton and the Congress to urge signing and ratifying the Protocol. National Council of Churches General Secretary Joan Brown Campbell wrote an article on the issue for newspaper editorial pages. All of their activities received extensive press coverage, and provoked heavy reaction from conservatives opposed to the Kyoto Protocol. In a related development, the NCC Working Group announced a major effort to promote energy efficiency in churches. A grant will permit outreach to congregations, and providing technical assistance. A pilot project has demonstrated that significant reductions can be achieved. This program is a demonstration of the churches' commitment to helping the US achieve domestic reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.

NEW YORK (UMNS) Results of the most extensive survey of congregational life ever conducted in the United States were released March 13.
"Faith Communities in the U.S. Today" has been produced over a five-year period by a coalition known as Faith Communities Today (FACT). The survey of local churches, mosques and synagogues has been funded in part by the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis.
Co-directors of the project are David Roozen and Carl Dudley, faculty members at Hartford (Conn.) Seminary and leaders in the school's Institute for Religion Research.
During a press conference at the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral, Dudley noted that congregations "are reporting their own vitality and their aliveness. They feel good about themselves in this survey.
"Overall, the survey provides a very upbeat window on faith communities today," he said.

U.S. Church Leaders Urge U.S. to Avoid Military Action Against Iraq September 13, 2002 Heads of many U.S. Protestant and Orthodox churches and organizations and leaders of Roman Catholic religious orders today announced opposition to U.S. military action against Iraq. In a letter to President Bush, the church leaders acknowledged that "Mr. Hussein poses a threat to his neighbors and to his own people, [but] we nevertheless believe it is wrong, as well as detrimental to U.S. interests" to launch an attack on Iraq. The letter, convened by a national coalition named Churches for Middle East Peace, stated, "We oppose on moral grounds the United States taking further military action against Iraq now." Citing the probable humanitarian consequences, civilian casualties, and the chaotic political aftermath of such a war, the church leaders noted that U.S. military force could easily destabilize the region with possible catastrophic results and further increase anti-American sentiment in the Middle East and Gulf. The Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches, a joint ministry of 36 Protestant and Orthodox churches, stated, "We do not need to march down the path to Armageddon. Pre-emptive military action now being contemplated by the Administration cannot be morally justified." Edgar, a former six-term Member of the U.S. Congress, said, "Among other consequences, consider that a pre-emptive strike by the U.S. presents to the world a model of aggression that may encourage other nations to attack neighboring countries that threaten them."

Justice and Peace : War Against Iraq
Statement of United Church of Christ leaders opposing U.S. war against Iraq With heavy hearts we hear once again the drumbeat of war against Iraq. As United Church of Christ leaders committed to GodÕs reign of justice and peace in the world and to the just conduct of our nation, we firmly oppose this advance to war. The case for a preemptive attack on Iraq has not been made. While IraqÕs weapons potential is uncertain, the death that would be inflicted on all sides in a war is certain. Striking against Iraq now will not serve to prevent terrorism or defend our nationÕs interests. We fear that war would only provoke greater regional instability and lead to the mass destruction it is intended to prevent. The human cost of war would be enormous, both to the United States and to Iraq. The most severe impact of a military assault on Iraq would be on its already suffering civilian population. Over a decade of containment and isolation, of crippling comprehensive sanctions, and of routine U.S. and British bombing have created miserable conditions inside Iraq. The sanctions have induced poverty, malnutrition, and starvation on the most vulnerable of the Iraqi people, including millions of children. These civilians, innocent of the atrocities Saddam Hussein has committed, should not bear the burden of deprivation and death such a war would surely exact on them. While we condemn Saddam HusseinÕs repressive policies, we are alarmed that our nationÕs leaders would consider taking unilateral military action to remove him. To do so without any support from our Arab friends, without allied consensus, and without United Nations authorization puts U.S. leadership and credibility under international law at stake. A preemptive war against Iraq also risks the solidarity and good will the global community has shown the United States this past year, already strained in recent months by our nationÕs sharpened turn toward unilateralism. U.S. military action and our uncertain plans for Iraq afterward, including the potential for a long-term U.S. presence in Iraq, jeopardize most of all our tenuous relations with Arab and Muslim states in the region, in turn severely damaging U.S. prospects of successfully brokering new Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

World Council of Churches general secretary challenges Bush’s religious claims World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser denounced as "misuse of religious language" US president George W. Bush’s attempts to invoke divine legitimation for his war against Iraq. Speaking March 20 at an ecumenical service of prayer for peace held at World Council of Churches (WCC) headquarters in Geneva, WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser denounced as "misuse of religious language" US president George W. Bush’s attempts to invoke divine legitimation for his war against Iraq.
Noting an increasing tendency on the part of the US president "to invoke religious, even divine legitimation for his intention to disarm Iraq by force", Raiser suggested that a Christian response today to “the political, ethical and spiritual challenge of war [… declared with the alleged purpose of restoring peace and justice” must be “an act of defiance: denouncing this misuse of religious language in order to justify an act of war that violates the legal order developed to protect world peace”.

US churches say Bush is backing roadmap to war
U.S. church leaders have expressed disappointment and alarm at yesterday’s remarks by President Bush that appeared reversed 35 years of longstanding U.S. policy on Israeli and Palestinian negotiations for peace, calling the decision a "road map to war".
Speaking through Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP), a coalition of 19 national Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox church offices, the leaders criticized President Bush’s unilateral prejudging of negotiations by his endorsement of Israel’s large Jewish settlements in the West Bank and of Israel’s wish to prevent any Palestinian refugees from ever being resettled within Israel.
Corinne Whitlatch, executive director of the coalition, said; “We had hoped that the Gaza withdrawal could be a first forward step toward peace.”

Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold welcomed the delegation to the Episcopal Church Center for an ecumenical prayer service in the chapel on November 8. In a conversation with local church leaders in the afternoon, the delegation members shared their own experiences and were exposed to a range of testimonies. "We have come to agonize with you," said Bishop Mvumelwano Dandala of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, president of the South African Council of Churches and leader of the delegation. He pointed out that members of the "Living Letters" delegation came from areas where violence is commonplace.

A year on from September 11, churches need to be vigilant, Alliance general secretary says
On September 10, Setri Nyomi, general secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, wrote to Alliance member churches and other partners in the USA. "The pain and void left in the hearts of Americans by the [September 11] attacks and the ensuing deaths remain fresh in our memories," he said. No less actual is the need for churches to be vigilant and to caution against responses which escalate violence, he emphasized. "We need to raise the difficult questions that make it possible for our political leaders to choose options which bring life rather than increase death." The full text of the letter follows.
Message to Alliance member churches and other partners in the USA
Dear friends, This Wednesday marks the first anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. I write this to you, our member churches in the USA, to affirm the fact that we are with you in prayer as this day is commemorated. Indeed the pain and void left in the hearts of Americans by the attacks and the ensuing deaths remain fresh in our memories. We continue to pray for comfort especially for the affected families, and for wisdom as our churches minister to people in the face of such tragic events.

More importantly, we believe our simple faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, on which our churchmanship centers, provides the basis on which Christians of all traditions can unite in worship and service. It demands neither uniformity, nor the dreary constitution of organic union. We are sure we have a unique contribution to make to Christian unity.
