Working its way through an extensive agenda, the annual General Assembly of the National Council of Churches (NCC) looked ahead during its Nov. 12-14 meeting to a celebration of its 50th anniversary in 1999 and issues of Christian and interfaith unity as the new millennium approaches. A synopsis of the Assembly follows. New member church admitted On Nov. 12, NCC membership grew to 34 communions with the unanimous admission of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of India. The church dates back to the visit of St. Thomas to India during the first century. It has one million members worldwide, 30,000 of them in the United States. The Mar Thoma Church is dispersed across 35 states with 26 clergy and 37 congregations, many of them located in Episcopal churches. The church’s head, Bishop Zacharias Mar Theophilus, said, “We are liturgical, biblical, missionary and ecumenical. Some historians call our church a ‘bridge church’ in India, and now we are a bridge from India to the United States.” Increased religious pluralism in the U.S. addressed

Representatives of World Council of Churches (WCC) member churches will travel to the United States 8-14 November as a "living letter" of compassion to the churches and people of the USA. The WCC executive committee was meeting in Geneva on 11 September when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Committee members, shocked by the news, spontaneously suggested the gesture. The purpose of the visit, which begins in New York, is "to express the solidarity and compassion of the worldwide ecumenical fellowship" to US churches and to "discern together what 11 September and subsequent events mean for the witness of the churches" in the US and elsewhere. The delegation is also coming to reflect on "the long-term consequences" of the attacks and the resulting allied military strikes against Taliban positions and terrorist camps in Afghanistan in the light of the WCC's Decade to Overcome Violence. The board of directors of the US Conference for the WCC, meeting in New York on 2 October, welcomed the visit and affirmed its purpose.

"Do all possible, without going to war," to resolve the Iraq crisis, the National Council of Churches General Assembly today (Nov. 16) unanimously urged President Bush and the U.S. Congress. In "After September 11, 2001: Public Policy Considerations for the United States of America," the delegates from the NCC’s 36 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican member communions, which comprise 50 million U.S. Christians, also called for a redoubling of effort to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They called on President Bush and the Congress to recommit the United States to international institutions like the United Nations and to the development of common security for the world, and committed themselves to work for peace and justice worldwide in the wake of September 11, 2001. The General Assembly expressed particular appreciation for that latter statement, in which the bishops warn against a rush to war with Iraq.

Dandala, 51, a South African who in September became General Secretary of the Nairobi, Kenya-based All Africa Conference of Churches, does not mince words when he describes Africa’s daunting challenges of "tragic poverty," "HIV/AIDS and other killer diseases" and "conflict brought by political despots." But he doesn’t stop there. "Sometimes when people see the wars that continue to afflict us, they don’t see the positive things," he says - "a continent trying to deal with its problems" and the enormous potential of Africa’s churches to "equip, empower and protect the people." Dandala, known for his work in conflict resolution at the height of the apartheid era in South Africa, is the immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. He led a World Council of Churches "Living Letters" delegation to the United States in November 2001, meeting with delegates to the NCC’s annual General Assembly among others to wrestle together with questions raised by the attacks of September 11, 2001.

"The vitality and creativity of peace and justice work in the United States is a resource for the global ecumenical family," the general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia told some 600 representatives of US churches and faith-based organizations.
Speaking at the opening of the second annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days for Global Peace with Justice, 5-8 March in Washington, DC - an initiative sponsored by a broad range of churches and church-related organizations - the WCC general secretary told the gathering that "in many ways you have been on the leading edge of advocacy work."
In that context, Kobia explained, the 2004 focus on the US of the WCC's Decade to Overcome Violence is "an opportunity to highlight the contributions which US churches and movements have made to the cause of peace", as well as an occasion for churches worldwide to express solidarity with churches in the United States.
"We know it is not easy speaking truth to power in the United States these days. But we want you to know that we are with you. We hope that you feel the support of the global ecumenical fellowship of churches worldwide as you conduct your advocacy for a better world," Kobia said.

U.S. Church Leaders, Citing Risks, Fault President Bush for Concessions to PM Sharon
Washington, D.C.
Friday, April 16, 2004 [National Council of Churches] (CMEP) U.S. church leaders today expressed disappointment and alarm at yesterday's remarks by President Bush that seemingly reversed 35 years of longstanding U.S. policy on Israeli and Palestinian negotiations for peace. Speaking through Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP), a coalition of 19 national Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox church offices, including the National Council of Churches USA, the leaders criticized President Bush's unilateral prejudging of negotiations by his endorsement of Israel's large Jewish settlements in the West Bank and of Israel's wish to prevent any Palestinian refugees from ever being resettled within Israel. Corinne Whitlatch, executive director of the coalition, stated, "We had hoped that the Gaza withdrawal could be a first forward step toward peace." Whitlatch continued, "Instead, President Bush has betrayed decades of diplomatic advances, undercut the future of the Road Map peace plan and ignored its cosponsors - the U.N., the European Union and the Russian Federation. His repeated assurance that he wants a viable Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel is losing credibility. The President's blatant disregard for Palestinian and Arab participation and sentiment places a future peace and our own security as risk." "The President's decision," said Father Drew Christiansen, S.J., a member of CMEP's Leadership Council and an editor of the Jesuit magazine America, "makes U.S. policy hostage to Prime Minister Sharon's expansionist goals. Legitimating West Bank settlements is a recipe for protracted conflict which will continue to impact adversely the dwindling Christian presence in the Holy Land."

Chapter V. The Arrangement and Furnishing of churches for the Celebration of the Eucharist. I. general Principles. 288. For the celebration
http://www.usccb.org/liturgy/current/chapter5.htm
Chapter V
The Arrangement and Furnishing of Churches for
the Celebration of the Eucharist
I. General Principles

288. For the celebration of the Eucharist, the people of God normally are gathered together in a church or, if there is no church or if it is too small, then in another respectable place that is nonetheless worthy of so great a mystery. Churches, therefore, and other places should be suitable for carrying out the sacred action and for ensuring the active participation of the faithful. Sacred buildings and requisites for divine worship should, moreover, be truly worthy and beautiful and be signs and symbols of heavenly realities.
289. Consequently, the Church constantly seeks the noble assistance of the arts and admits the artistic expressions of all peoples and regions. In fact, just as she is intent on preserving the works of art and the artistic treasures handed down from past centuries and, insofar as necessary, on adapting them to new needs, so also she strives to promote new works of art that are in harmony with the character of each successive age.
On account of this, in commissioning artists and choosing works of art to be admitted into a church, what should be required is that true excellence in art which nourishes faith and devotion and accords authentically with both the meaning and the purpose for which it is intended.

Statement of U.S. churches and faith-based organizations in support of the National Congress for Peace and Country (Congreso Nacional Por Paz y Pais) and a call to all Colombians and the international community to commit to a negotiated settlement of conflict.
As churches and faith based organizations of the United States, we wish to offer our support and solidarity for this historic National Peace Conference, May 9-11, 2002 as you meet to discuss alternatives to war. As people who have worked with many of you over the years to protect and foster human rights, curb violence, support civil society initiatives for peace, assist displaced people and refugees, and promote social and economic development and education, we are convinced that the only solution Colombia' s decades old war is a peaceful negotiated solution. We are well aware that the United States support for a military solution to the conflict, first through the "drug war" and more recently through the war on terrorism, only leads to increased violence against civilians, displacement, and environmental degradation. We commit ourselves to working for a change in this policy.

Conference of European Churches - Office of Communications No. 03-11/e 20 February 2003 IRAQ CRISIS: BUSH SHOULD RECEIVE US CHURCH LEADERS Having just returned from a visit to London (17-18 February), where he accompanied a delegation of US church leaders who had a 50-minute meeting with Prime Minister Tony Blair , the General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), the Revd Dr Keith Clements , wrote yesterday a letter to US President George W. Bush , asking him to finally meet the US church leader who are seeking to find a solution for the current crisis with Iraq by other means than war. The US church delegations have visited Berlin, Paris and London, and two more visits are scheduled in Rome and Moscow. In Berlin, they were received by Chancellor . The delegations comprise leaders of the Protestant and Orthodox Churches in membership with the National Council of Churches (NCC) in the United States, as well as US Roman Catholic representatives. The fact that these church visitors were received by Blair and Schröder and by senior government officers in Paris, Dr Clements argues, "is an indication of how seriously their views are being listened to all across Europe, including those governments which are closest in position to the stated policy of the United States in Iraq". But up to now, several requests for a similar meeting with President Bush have received no response. "To us in Europe", Dr Clements states, "it would seem to be a paradox if those who are being granted hearings in the highest circles on our continent were not to be accorded a corresponding attention at home, and therefore in all sincerity I express the hope that their requests for a meeting with yourself be sympathetically considered and granted."

WCC pastoral letter to US churches urges discernment in response to attacks
WCC general secretary, Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser, sent a pastoral letter to WCC member churches in the USA on Thursday, 20 September, to express continued ecumenical support and sympathy in the wake of the attacks on New York and Washington, DC, and to urge discernment and encourage faithfulness in local, national and international responses. The letter also shares the WCC Executive Committee's recommendation to send a delegation of church leaders from around the world to the US as "'living letters' of compassion, and to engage with you in a common reflection about how we can shape a shared witness to the world in a time of such great need". The text of the letter follows: "Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Grace and peace to you in our One Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. In the brief message I sent you on behalf of the Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches on that tragic morning of 11 September, I assured you of the prayers of your sister churches around the world. That was an affirmation of faith. Now you have had the evidence of those prayers in an almost unprecedented flood of messages of compassion, love and solidarity from churches in East, West, North and South. This expression of unity in such a time of trial gives flesh to the words Paul wrote to the Church in Corinth: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too... Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort" ( II Cor. 1:3-7).
