It is no mere rhetoric, as was made clear last week when up for auction were the boots and shirt worn in a game played over half a century ago. The match was the decisive tie of the 1950 World Cup. In the newly-built Maracanã stadium hosts Brazil needed just a draw to claim their first world title. They failed - thwarted by Obdúlio Varela, the man who wore the shirt and boots sold last week. He was Uruguay's inspirational captain. Nowadays, when the national team play in Montevideo the crowd unfurl a giant banner with '1950' written Tim Vickery He held his men firm in the face of Brazil's furious assault, and then provided the midfield platform for his side's 2-1 win.

Of course, at that time, there were no radio transmitters on air aside from the government telegraph station. So, the listeners were hearing the magic of dots and dashes ... and nothing else. Then in the spring of 1922 General Electric put a 10 Watt transmitter on air in order to provide something for the receiver buyers to listen to. There is no specific data for the precise date, but it is accepted that it was few days before the BBC was on air in April 1922. By October 1, 1922, the first soccer radio transmission was on air. Some have suggested it is the first soccer game to be broadcast in the world ... In 1923 this station became CWOS, "Radio Sud América General Electric," with a powerful 1 kW transmitter. On May 15, 1931, the station changed its name to the current one, "Radio El Espectador", on 810 kHz.

Though scouted by the Spanish in 1516, the lack of mineral resources or a native population that could be forced to work made the region unattractive to the Spanish. The vast pampas of Uruguay interested the Portuguese colonists in Brazil more than the Spanish. Until the Spanish ousted the Portuguese in the 18th century, Uruguay was more a part of Brazil. When Argentina gained its independence in 1810, Brazil and Argentina both wanted the sparsely-populated Uruguay. They fought a war (1825-28) which ended without a clear victor, after which the British brokered a treaty creating Uruguay as a buffer state between Brazil and Argentina. During the 20th century, Uruguay came to be known as one of the most progressive societies in Latin America. It stood out as an example for its advanced social legislation, political stability, and relatively high standard of living. But during the 1960s, problems arising from the stagnating agricultural economy causes social unrest. An urban guerrilla group called the Tupamaros fought back with terrorism when the government cracked down on unions and students. The military was then called in to fight the Tupamaros, and this brought not only the defeat of the Tupamaros, but also a military dictatorship from 1973 to 1985. During this period all opposition was suppressed, and Uruguay had the highest ratio of political prisoners to population in the world.
