CREATION AND EVOLUTION By Law of February 24th, 1911, the Military Pension Fund was founded, thus establishing the Military Social Security system from an institutional point of view. By Law of November 12th, 1942, the Military Pension Fund becomes a legal entity and on October 13th, 1956 the Constitution and Legislation Commission of the Senators' Chamber unanimously concluded that it should have administrative autonomy. By Law of November 30th, 1960, the Military Pension Fund changes its name to "Military Retirement and Pension Fund." By Law of February 21st, 1974 and Law of April 30th, 1974, the Military Retirement and Pension Fund, up to then a State legal entity with its own patrimony and administrative autonomy, becomes the "Military Retirement and Pensions Service", directly dependent on the Ministry of National Defence. (Article 145 of the last of the above mentioned laws stipulates that: "Include in Section 3 - Ministry of National Defence - Section 31 - "Military Retirement and Pension Fund" as a sub-division of the above mentioned section which will be called "Military Retirement and Pensions Service." This enactment does not modify neither the legal status of the passivities under its charge nor the patrimony affected to them.") Finally, by Law

History Uruguay's aboriginal inhabitants were the Charrúa Indians, a hunter-gatherer people who cared little for outsiders. They killed the explorer Juan Diaz de Solís and most of his party when the Spaniards encountered them in 1516. By the 17th century, the Charrúas had prospered and, abandoning hostilities, began trading with the Spanish. In 1680, the Portuguese founded Colonia on the estuary of the Río de la Plata as a rival to Spanish-held Buenos Aires on the opposite shore. Spain responded by building its own citadel at Montevideo. Uruguayan hero José Artigas fought against the Spanish but was unable to prevent a Brazilian takeover of the Banda (the original name of the eastern shore of the Río de la Plata). Exiled to Paraguay, he inspired the '33 Orientales' who, with Argentine support, liberated the area in 1828 and established Uruguay as an independent buffer state between Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay's fragile independence was repeatedly threatened during the 19th century - militarily by Argentina and Brazil, and economically by Britain. Federalist forces in collusion with Argentina besieged Montevideo from 1838-51 and helped create two warring political parties, the Blancos and the Colorados. Around the same time, the British introduced new wool, meat and rail industries. They also replaced the rangy criollo stock with their own cattle, thus commercializing one of the country's few abundant resources. For the remainder of the century, the contest between the Blancos and Colorados continued, immersing the country in civil war, dictatorship and political intrigue.

      Uruguay: Financial Market
In Uruguay, the exchange market is completely free. The market is governed exclusively by the offer and demand and there are no restriction concerning the use or possession of foreign currency. The international turnovers of money, values and precious coins are also free and are not subjected to any special permission or authorization by the Government. Also, companies and particular utilities can be issued abroad. The majority of the most important banks are present in Uruguay. Law protects operations with any financial entity by a strict bank secret. Uruguay admits the existence of companies, which have shares to the bearer, where the shareholders' identity may remain confidential. Some of these companies perform offshore activities, counting with good tax exoneration. The Uruguayan duty-free zones not only benefit companies with a good tax exoneration but also with a wide range of services that is not affected by any kind of monopoly. The Uruguayan financial market is considered by many experts to be a privileged place in South America. In fact, it is considered "The Switzerland of America".

Uruguay’s Jewish community took root in the 1880s. For many, Uruguay was a temporary stop on the way to Brazil or Argentina. In 1916, the Ashkenaz i Jews formed a burial society, or chevra kaddisha. The following year, the doors of the country’s first synagogue were opened. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, scores of Jews passed through Uruguay destined for Argentina. Though a strict immigration quota was imposed during World War II, nearly 2,200 German Jews managed to enter the country.
