Punta Del Este - History D iscovered by the Spaniards in 1516, the area was not inhabited without loss of life to the explorers. The Charrúa Indians put up a fierce fight and the battles for the territory continued, later including the Portuguese and the British. But in 1825 the independent Uruguayan territory was declared "free from any and all foreign powers." This set the stage for the development of the country. At the beginning of the 19th century, Punta del Este was a vast semi-deserted region only visited by sailors and fishermen. Today this coastal town, commonly referred to as the St Tropez of South America, attracts close to 300,000 visitors each year. Opposite the large peninsula separating the two waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Rio de la Plata, lie the enchanted islands of Isla Gorriti and Isla de los Lobos, inhabited by one of the world's largest sea-lion colonies. Punta del Este is one of the largest and most fashionable seaside resorts of South America; fishing is also important to the local economy. In 1939 the German battleship Graf Spee was crippled by a British squadron in waters off Punta del Este. The city was the site of the conference (Aug., 1961) of the Inter-American Economic and Social Council, during which the charter of the

European teams from countries most affected by World War II (among others the Polish team) didn't enter the qualifiers. The silver medallists of the previous championships, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Argentina didn't participate either. For the first time teams from England and Scotland entered the competition and Uruguay, the world champion of 1930, entered after 20 years of absence. Eventually 13 out of 16 entered teams played in the tournament, after India, Scotland and Turkey had withdrawn from the competition after the draw. Under these circumstances, FIFA invited France and Portugal to play, but both countries rejected the offer.

Info Ownership. Bibliography. 1930 World Cup poster FIFA congress: Host: Qualifiers: Participants: Winner: Uruguay 13 teams Uruguay Organizing the first World Cup championship was granted to Uruguay to honour its achievements in sports (two Olympic gold medals in football) and a centennial of this country's constitution, falling in 1930. Only 13 national teams declared a will to participate in the tournament (top European teams such as England, Scotland, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary didn't enter the competition), so there was no qualifiers. The tournament was organized in two rounds: group games and play-offs. The participating teams were divided into 4 groups by geographical region. 5 teams were seeded: Uruguay (Olympic champion), Argentina (silver medallist), Brasil, USA and Bolivia. During the group games Yugoslavia did very well; so did USA and favourites from Uruguay and Argentina and these 4 teams made the semi-final. Just as expected, the favourite teams crushed their opponents (both games 6:1) and met in the final. For the players from Argentina this was supposed to be a kind of rematch for their loss with Uruguay in the Olympic final of 1928, but once again they were defeated. The first World Cup champion was the team from Uruguay. There was no 3. place game, since it was not in the regulations.

    Uruguay
    Culture
Uruguay may be a small country but it has impressive artistic and literary traditions. International acclaim has greeted artists such as Pedro Figari, a painter of bucolic scenes, and Jos© Enrique Rod³, arguably the nation's greatest writer. Theater is popular and playwrights such as Mauricio Rosencof - a former Tupamaros founder tortured by the military government in the 1970s - are prominent in cultural life. Most of the country's musical and dance traditions (folk songs, polkas, waltzes, tangos, etc) came from Europe but developed local hybrids. Football is a national obsession. Uruguayans who profess a religion are almost exclusively Roman Catholic, but the Church and state are officially separate. Other religions have made small inroads: There is a small Jewish community in Montevideo, several evangelical Protestant groups and traces of Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. Uruguayans are voracious meat eaters and the parrillada (beef platter) is a national standard. Another standard is chivito , a tasty and substantial steak sandwich with all the trimmings. Typical snacks include

    Uruguay

Uruguay has a long and established Jewish community, and its development parallels the development of the country. Uruguay did not have a significant Inquisition and there are some traces of Conversos who lived in the 16th century. Few documents relating to Jewish history during the Colonial period are extant. In 1726, the governor of Montevideo called upon the first settlers to be "persons of worth, of good habits, repute and family, so that they be not inferior nor of Moorish or Jewish race." The first record of Jewish settlement is in the 1770s. With the end of the Inquisition in 1813, the political and social system of Uruguay evolved to a greater level of openness and tolerance. This openness provided the basis for continued Jewish residence beginning in the nineteenth-century. Documentation of today's Jewish community dates back only to 1880. In 1905, there were various records of the Jews' arrival. The first recorded minyan was not until 1912. In 1909, 150 Jews lived in Montevideo, the city with the largest Jewish population. Despite the history of settlement, the community did not open its first
