    History
Uruguay's aboriginal inhabitants were the Charrºa Indians, a hunter-gatherer people who cared little for outsiders. They killed the explorer Juan Diaz de Sols and most of his party when the Spaniards encountered them in 1516. By the 17th century, the Charrºas had prospered and, abandoning hostilities, began trading with the Spanish. In 1680, the Portuguese founded Colonia on the estuary of the Ro de la Plata as a rival to Spanish-held Buenos Aires on the opposite shore. Spain responded by building its own citadel at Montevideo. Uruguayan hero Jos© Artigas fought against the Spanish but was unable to prevent a Brazilian takeover of the Banda (the original name of the eastern shore of the Ro de la Plata). Exiled to Paraguay, he inspired the '33 Orientales' who, with Argentine support, liberated the area in 1828 and established Uruguay as an independent buffer state between Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay's fragile independence was repeatedly threatened during the 19th century - militarily by Argentina and Brazil, and economically by Britain. Federalist forces in collusion with Argentina besieged Montevideo from 1838-51 and helped create two warring political parties, the Blancos and the Colorados. Around the same time, the British introduced new wool, meat and rail industries. They also replaced the rangy criollo stock with their own cattle, thus commercializing one of the country's few abundant resources. For the remainder of the century, the contest between the Blancos and Colorados continued, immersing the country in civil war, dictatorship and political intrigue.

    Uruguay History
You won't find many remnants of Uruguay's precolonial history. The ancient Charrua Indian population was decimated when the Europeans began to settle the area in 1624. For the next two centuries, it was a battleground, as well as a prize, in struggles between Portugal and Spain and, later, between Brazil and Argentina. Possession of La Banda Oriental (or the "East Shore" of the Rio de la Plata, as the territory was then called) passed back and forth several times. Finally, in 1828, the region was declared an independent republic, which would act as a buffer state between the two largest South American powers. By 1900, Uruguay had developed into a model social-welfare state. This lasted until the late 1960s, when political and economic turmoil - combined with an empty national treasury - led to fierce inflation, high unemployment and, by 1973, an urban guerrilla movement. The military stepped in and ruled with a heavy hand for the next 10 years, detaining more than 60,000 citizens. Elections in 1984 and the reestablishment of civilian government have allowed the country to resume its economic, political and social progress. The 1990s brought economic liberalization, including privatization in many sectors, reduction of inflation and membership in Mercosur (the Common Market of the South, an economic-integration agreement between Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). Problems plague the economy, as is true in the rest of the region.

By 1828, the Uruguayans has successfully expelled the Portuguese. Though a constitution was drafted, the country soon fell into civil war which continued for several decades. From 1865 to 1958 the Colorado party was the dominant force in Uruguay. During the early part of this period, Europeans settled in the country so enthusiastically that by 1880, newcomers constituted about fifty percent of the population. Still, civil war threatened with the last eruption occurring in 1904. Though a military coup succeeded in 1933, by 1951 the people were calling for a return to a plural system. Over the next decades, political tensions continued and the country witnessed the rise of the Tupamaros (the National Liberation Movement) in 1967 which further served to destabilize the country. In 1973, the military again took control in a repressive and brutal regime and it was not until over a decade later that a civilian presidential election was held.

He was chosen president and was responsible for the succession of Manuel Oribe , against whom he revolted in 1836. In the long civil strife, which was to characterize much of Uruguay's subsequent history, two factions appeared, distinguished by their badges, the Colorados [reds] of Rivera and the Blancos [whites] of Oribe. Rivera succeeded (1838) in routing Oribe, who fled to Buenos Aires. The following year Rivera declared war on Juan Manuel de Rosas , ruler of the United Provinces of La Plata (Argentina). With the help of Rosas, Oribe besieged Montevideo from 1843 to 1851. Rivera, opposed by factions within his own party, was exiled from the invested city in 1847, taking refuge in Brazil. After the downfall of Rosas and the end of the siege, he was selected (1853) as one of the triumvirate to head the provisional government of Uruguay.

The Spanish discovered the territory of present-day Uruguay in 1516 but the Indians' fierce resistance to conquest combined with the absence of gold and silver limited settlement in the region during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Spanish introduced cattle which became a source of wealth in the region. Spanish colonization increased as Spain sought to limit Portugal's expansion of Brazil's frontiers. Montevideo was founded by the Spanish in the early 18th century as a military stronghold; its natural harbor soon developed into a commercial center competing with Argentina's capital Buenos Aires. Uruguay's early-19th century history was shaped by ongoing fights between the British Spanish Portuguese and colonial forces for dominance in the Argentina-Brazil-Uruguay region. In 1811 Jose Gervasio Artigaswho became Uruguay's national herolaunched a revolt against Spain which resulted in the formation of a regional federation with Argentina. In 1821 Uruguay was annexed to Brazil by Portugal but Uruguayan patriots declared independence from Brazil in 1825. With the support of Argentine troops and after three years of fighting they defeated Brazilian forces.

For the remainder of the century, the contest between the Blancos and Colorados continued, immersing the country in civil war, dictatorship and political intrigue. In the early 20th century, the visionary President José Batlle y Ordóñez achieved far-reaching reforms and made Uruguay the only 'welfare state' in Latin America. During his two terms as president - 1903-07 and 1911-15 - he implemented a range of free social services, abolished capital punishment and sought to curb the country's legacy of strong-arm rule. Uruguay soon flourished on the back of the rural livestock sector but its failure to grow, coupled with the country's lack of natural resources, meant the welfare state became increasingly fictitious over time. The country's former prosperity had ebbed away by the 1960s as state-supported enterprises became riddled with corruption. The country slid into dictatorship and was thrown into turmoil by the Tupamaros, an urban guerrilla movement which appeared publicly in 1967.

Uruguay: History A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement, the Tupamaros, launched in the late 1960s, led Uruguay's president to agree to military control of his administration in 1973. Uruguay has long had one of South America's highest standards of living; its political and labor conditions are among the freest on the continent.
