With their distinctive "mound landscapes" this area of the Maldonando Region is a "must see" for tourists and visitors. Golf and Tennis clubs can also be found in this vicinity. La Barra del Maldonado, a beautiful inlet that flows from the back bay area of Maldonado out to the Atlantic Ocean. This area is where the locals go to get away from the crowded beaches. The future capital Montevideo was founded in the early 18th century and became a rival to Buenos Aires across the Rio de la Plata . Montevideo however, was thought of as a military center for the Spanish empire whereas Buenos Aires was a commercial center.
