Uruguay may be a small country but it has impressive artistic and literary traditions. International acclaim has greeted artists such as Pedro Figari, a painter of bucolic scenes, and Jos© Enrique Rod³, arguably the nation's greatest writer. Theater is popular and playwrights such as Mauricio Rosencof - a former Tupamaros founder tortured by the military government in the 1970s - are prominent in cultural life. Most of the country's musical and dance traditions (folk songs, polkas, waltzes, tangos, etc) came from Europe but developed local hybrids. Football is a national obsession. Uruguayans who profess a religion are almost exclusively Roman Catholic, but the Church and state are officially separate. Other religions have made small inroads: There is a small Jewish community in Montevideo, several evangelical Protestant groups and traces of Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. Uruguayans are voracious meat eaters and the parrillada (beef platter) is a national standard. Another standard is chivito , a tasty and substantial steak sandwich with all the trimmings. Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java. Uruguay has impressive artistic and literary traditions. International acclaim has greeted artists such as Pedro Figari, a painter of bucolic scenes, and José Enrique Rodó, arguably the nation's greatest writer. Most of the country's musical and dance traditions are: folk songs, tango, milonga, candombe, and waltz. Soccer is a national obsession (Olympic Champion in 1924 and 1928, and World Champion in 1930 and 1950). Literacy rate: 97 percent (highest in Latin America). System of universal, free, and secular education require a total of twelve years, considering school and high-school attendance. The University attendance is free. An estimated 75 percent of secondary school-age children are enrolled in secondary school (also highest rate in Latin America). Despite inadequate teaching resources, quality of education is generally high. Uruguayans who profess a religion are almost exclusively Roman Catholic, but the Church and State are officially separate. Other religions have made small inroads: There is a small Jewish community in Montevideo, and several evangelical Protestant groups. Uruguayans are voracious meat eaters and the "parrillada" (beef platter) is a national standard. Another standard is "chivito", a tasty and substantial steak sandwich with all the trimmings. Typical snacks include "olímpicos" (club sandwiches) and "húngaras" (spicy sausage wrapped in a hot dog roll). Mate (herb tea) is quaffed in enormous quantities. "Clericó" (a mixture of white wine and fruit juice), and "medio y medio" (part sparkling wine and part white wine), are popular.

Country Info Uruguay Introduction Uruguay General Data Uruguay Maps Uruguay Culture ... Uruguay Time and Date Uruguay Culture Back to Top Uruguay was once known as the "Switzerland of South America" as a result of its relative governmental stability, advanced level of economic development, and social peace. Indeed, in the creation of a welfare state, it was far ahead of Switzerland during the first half of the twentieth century. Starting in the 1950s, however, Uruguay's economy began to stagnate, and the oncevaunted welfare state became increasingly poor. Commentators talked of the "Latin Americanization" of Uruguay as it descended from the ranks of the developed nations to the level of the Third World. Political and social unrest eventually culminated in the military coup of 1973; by then the case for seeing Uruguay as very different from the rest of Latin America was largely undermined. During the sixty-year period from 1870 to 1930, foreign immigrants flooded into Uruguay, mainly from Spain and Italy, to improve their standard of living. A historical study of social and economic development ranked Uruguay fourth among all independent nations in the world in the 1880s. In 1990 Uruguay's levels of education and nutrition were still among the highest in Latin America, as well as its per capita ownership of radios, televisions, and telephones and its newspaper readership. However, four decades of economic stagnation had seriously eroded Uruguay's lead in terms of per capita gross domestic product. Historically, only Argentina rivaled it in Latin America in terms of this crucial economic indicator. By the middle of the twentieth century, Uruguay had been overtaken by Venezuela in terms of per capita GDP, and in 1970 Chile had almost caught up. By 1980 so had Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, and Mexico.

Uruguay History
You won't find many remnants of Uruguay's precolonial history. The ancient Charrua Indian population was decimated when the Europeans began to settle the area in 1624. For the next two centuries, it was a battleground, as well as a prize, in struggles between Portugal and Spain and, later, between Brazil and Argentina. Possession of La Banda Oriental (or the "East Shore" of the Rio de la Plata, as the territory was then called) passed back and forth several times. Finally, in 1828, the region was declared an independent republic, which would act as a buffer state between the two largest South American powers. By 1900, Uruguay had developed into a model social-welfare state. This lasted until the late 1960s, when political and economic turmoil - combined with an empty national treasury - led to fierce inflation, high unemployment and, by 1973, an urban guerrilla movement. The military stepped in and ruled with a heavy hand for the next 10 years, detaining more than 60,000 citizens. Elections in 1984 and the reestablishment of civilian government have allowed the country to resume its economic, political and social progress. The 1990s brought economic liberalization, including privatization in many sectors, reduction of inflation and membership in Mercosur (the Common Market of the South, an economic-integration agreement between Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). Problems plague the economy, as is true in the rest of the region.
