Comment: I was very surpised with this book.Very consise, recently updated, good structure, comprehensive. It's is a book that manages to keep track with all the latest advances in the field of urology, and at the same time be simple and without any unnesecary details that will confuse med.students.I suggest it to all of them (students atleast) who are starting now their journey in the field of urology. P.S.Only drawback ,as with most of Lange Editions, is the absence of colour illustrations or diagramms or info boxes, making the layout of this book seem rather cheap.

The Urology Residency Program, College of Medicine, University of Tennessee is located on the Memphis Campus of the University of Tennessee. The University of Tennessee undergraduate campus is located in Knoxville, Tennessee, 375 miles east of Memphis. The UT Memphis campus consists of those colleges related to healthcare: the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Allied Health. The Urology Residency Program is 12 months of general surgery followed by 48 months of clinical urology. The urology residents will still be exposed to urologic research (both clinical and basic science) throughout their 48 months of training. One pre-urology year (1 year of general surgery) is offered by the sponsoring institution. For those applicants accepted into the University of Tennessee Urology Program, the pre-urology General Surgery year must be performed at the University of Tennessee. The educational philosophy of the department is that resident and medical student teaching is of the highest priority and that this teaching should occur primarily in the context of active clinical experience in a variety of patient care settings which expose residents to the full spectrum of urologic disease.

The Division of Urology Surgery offers a four-year residency program, upon completion of one preliminary general surgery year. The program is unique in the breadth of urologic procedures performed in a variety of healthcare settings including tertiary care, private practice and managed care. The program provides a strong clinical exposure, over 500-600 operative procedures per year. Prior residents have pursued highly sought after fellowships, academic careers and have joined busy highly regarded private practice groups. The PGY-2 resident will spend 6 months rotating on the transplant service (2 months), surgical intensive care unit (2 months) and a laparoscopy focused general surgery service (2 months). The remaining six months will be spent on the urology services at UMass University Campus and St. Vincent's Hospital. The emphasis on the urology rotations will be on outpatient evaluation and management of urologic diseases and outpatient procedures, (cystoscopy, transrectal ultrasound, ESWL, vasectomies, etc.) The PGY-3 year is spent entirely at the University Campus of the UMass Memorial Healthcare system, rotating on either the adult service or the pediatric and male sexual dysfunction service for a period of six months each.

Pediatric Urology General Information
General Information
Pediatric Urology involves managment of genital and urinary problems that occur in children. A special emphasis on developmental problems affecting the kidneys, bladder, urethra or genital tract. Common conditions treated include hypospadias (urine passage ending short of the end of the penis), hydronephrosis (obstruction of urine flow from the kidneys), cryptorchidism (undescended testes), reflux (backup of urine from the bladder toward the kidneys), and intersex (incomplete or otherwise abnormal development of the genital organs.) What's New in Pediatric Urology, 2001 Infections The presence of even a single episode of epididymitis in children has been considered an indication for evaluation to detect a renal or ureteral anomaly as its etiology. A study from Paris challenges this assumption with data from evaluation of 38 children seen over an 8-year period (Cappele et al., 2000.) They found that only 18% of evaluated children had renal anomalies such as reflux or renal malrotation, and only one child required surgery (for ureterocele.) The frequency of anomalies was lower than expected. Bladder anomalies Reflux A survey of American Association of Pediatrics, Section on Urology members on standard management of vesicoureteral reflux (Herndon et al., 2001.) Urine culture is routinely performed by 64-71% of respondents and yearly VCUG or radionuclide scan for followup by 99% of respondents with ultrasound by 77%. After reflux surgery, 91% of respondents perform VCUG and ultrasound. The overwhelming majority of practitioners agree on the timing and type of radiographic studies to be used to follow children with reflux. A low incidence (2%) of renal scars in children after ureteral reimplantation was noted in a prospective study from Australia (Webster et al., 2000.) These findings suggest that surgical correction of reflux may protect kidneys better than previously believed.
