Resources Urban Sprawl Two hundred years ago, the United States was a nation of farmers. Today, 80% of us live in urban and suburban areas. As our population continues to grow and sprawl into the surrounding environment, our neighborhood of trees and forests is being lost. This loss is more than sentimental-it carries an economic price tag. Sprawl development is the number one threat to our nation's trees and forests, according to a 1999 survey of American Forests members. They are worried about the seemingly inevitable loss of forests and are joining with us to encourage tree-smart development that saves money and helps build livable, sustainable communities. American Forests has spent more than 20 years researching the condition of our urban and suburban forests. Our work in the Puget Sound, Atlanta, and Chesapeake Bay regions has revealed a stark fact: the heavy tree canopy in all these areas has declined by more than one-third in just twenty-five years. 'Walking' neighbourhoods could be healthier It may be possible to predict the average weight of people in a particular district - simply by looking at an aerial photo. US scientists have suggested that people who live in a "sprawling" district - where shops and services are widely spaced - tend to weigh more. People living in "compact" neighbourhoods weighed less. The researchers say this is because people are more likely to try to reach destinations on foot - and burn off calories in the process. The research, published in the American Journal of Health Promotion, looked at health information from 200,000 people living in 448 US counties and 83 metropolitan areas. Even when factors such as the average age, social status and wealth were taken into account, they found that residents of compact counties, where shops and offices were reachable on foot, tended to spend much more of their time walking. Poor accessibility is the common denominator of urban sprawl - nothing is within easy walking distance of anything else
Dr Reid Ewing Perhaps as a result they tended to weigh, on average, six pounds less than residents of "sprawling" counties.

Planning rethink is needed, say researchers
Climate experts are urging the UK Government to consider the impact of urban sprawl on the weather. Cities are potentially as big an influence on local rainfall and temperatures as more general, large-scale changes in the climate, they say. Skyscrapers and closely packed houses are of particular concern, a panel of UK climatologists told the British Association's science festival in Leicester. Both designs of building could increase local rainfall by creating low-level turbulence in the air, said Professor Chris Collier of the University of Salford in Greater Manchester. Another issue is so-called "heat islands" created by hot air from factories, cars, and people crammed into cities. The centre of Manchester, for example, is warmer than surrounding rural areas by about 8 degrees Celsius.

shop ... search CBC Radio News, July 2001 cross North America, many big cities are becoming victims of their own economic success. They sprawl beyond their old boundaries. They gobble land for homes for workers attracted by the chance at urban prosperity. For decades, governments built highways to allow people who worked downtown to buy a piece of the good life in suburbia. And other government policies supported the construction of vast subdivisions of single family homes. And each year, those suburbs grew outward. As a result, some people are in their cars for hours every day, travelling on crowded, multi-laned highways to shop or to work. Cities seem like endless suburbs, as thousands of new developments rise from what used to be open fields. This series "City Limits; Controlling Sprawl in North America" looks at how governments and individuals are dealing with rampant growth. Our Washington correspondent, Frank Koller, suggested the series after his travels across the United States during last year's presidential campaign. He was intrigued by the movement to revitalize American cities - a movement that's being fueled by citizens' groups, businesses and governments. The new buzz words in urban planning are 'Smart Growth.' It's a plan that puts people ahead of cars, and aims to make cities more liveable.

Urban Sprawl is not simply a development that undercuts the quality of life for suburbanites. It has raised alarms across the nation, as fair housing advocates, environmentalists, land use planners, and even many suburban employers who cannot find the workers they need, have recognized that the costs go far beyond aesthetics. Despite the agreement that something needs to be done, there is no consensus on what works. Urban Sprawl: Causes, Consequences, and Policy Responses assembles leading scholars who analyze the major causes and consequences of urban sprawl and the policy initiatives that are being explored in response to these developments. They look at Maryland's "smart growth" initiatives, Portland's urban growth boundary, and tax-based revenue sharing in the Twin Cities and Chicago metropolitan areas. Urban Sprawl is fundamental for understanding the forces shaping urban development and the social and economic costs of this very visible problem. , edited by Gregory D. Since then, the League has reached many hundreds of residents in Erie and Niagara Counties with its PowerPoint presentation on the economic, environmental, and social costs of urban sprawl, on remedies being used in other urban metropolitan regions around the country, and about options available to this region to reverse the trend. New Report: Many members in the audiences for the PowerPoint presentations in our Education Campaign on Sprawl raised questions about the impact of sprawling development on their property taxes. They asked for more data. Didn't development mean more revenue for the town? Don't the developers pay for the new roads, sewers and water lines needed by the planned new housing? This interest led the League to do additional research into the costs of sprawl, and we've written a new report on our findings. The report is titled

    General Description
Sprawl is a pattern and pace of land development in which the rate of land consumed for urban purposes exceeds the rate of population growth and which results in an inefficient and consumptive use of land and its associated resources. Bear in mind that how sprawl is defined depends upon the perspective of who presents the definition. For example, disease analogies such as cancerous growth and virus have been used to describe sprawl. The Sierra Club describes suburban sprawl as irresponsible, often poorly-planned development that destroys green space, increases traffic and air pollution, crowds schools and drives up taxes. Tamer descriptions of sprawl include low-density urbanization and discontinuous development.Sprawl must be considered in a space-time context. It is not simply the increase of urban lands in a given area, but the rate of its increase relative to population growth.Sprawl occurs when the rate of land conversion and consumption for urban uses exceeds the rate of population growth for a given area over a specified period of time. The Chesapeake Bay and Mid-Atlantic From Space project uses impervious surfaces as an indicator of urbanization within this region. The growth of impervious lands between 1990 and 2000 is used to assess urban development and the spread of sprawl.

FAIR ads unfairly blame immigrants for urban sprawl, traffic jams
by Daniel T. Griswold T elevision ads airing in a number of cities are trying to blame immigrants for suburban sprawl and traffic jams. One spot playing in northern Virginia, where I live, opens with a pastoral scene of a horse farm and then cuts to a bulldozer tearing up the earth for another subdivision. The ad invites viewers to call "to learn more about what we can do to stop the runaway population growth that's fueling sprawl." The sponsor of the ad campaign, the Foundation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), provides a simple but flawed solution: drastically cut immigration to the United States. It would be the wrong answer aimed at the wrong problem. To begin, it mangles the truth to claim that the United States is experiencing "runaway population growth." America's population growth has actually been trending downward for decades. According to the Census Bureau, the population of the United States is growing at just under 1 percent a year. That is slower than the average rate of 1.3 percent during the last century, and far below the peak rate of 1.7 percent in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Our population growth rate is not running away but running down.
