COVERING URBAN SPRAWL: RETHINKING THE AMERICAN DREAM
An RTNDF Journalist's Resource Guide by David Goldberg Suburban expansion, urban sprawl, growth management, smart growth, new urbanism: these are the terms currently used to describe what is happening in many communities across the U.S. No matter what we call it, expanding cities spawn a host of critical issues affecting everyone in your viewing and listening audience.
Traffic, jobs, housing, shopping, the air we breathe and the water we drink are just a few areas where the impacts of growth and land management touch our daily lives. It is no surprise these issues are catching the eyes and ears of many local and national politicians.
To help reporters and producers tackle these stories, RTNDF published a Journalist's Resource Guide, Covering Urban Sprawl: Rethinking the American Dream.
Also available on CD-ROM. This resource features (click here to see the table of contents)
  • a comprehensive list of national and local contacts
  • key statistics and
  • valuable background information
to get you started on covering the issues related to urban sprawl. Help your community get up to speed on what causes urban sprawl and more importantly what are some of the alternatives.

Urban Sprawl Population growth is half the problem in sprawl A major controversy in the efforts to halt rural land loss is whether land-use and consumption decisions are the primary engines of urban sprawl, or whether it is the nation's continuing population boom providing most of the power driving the expansion. A careful analysis of U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Agriculture data found that the two sprawl factors share equally in the blame: Per Capita Spraw l: About half the sprawl nationwide appears to be related to the land-use and consumption choices that lead to an increase in the average amount of urban land per resident. Population Growth : The other half of sprawl is related to the increase in the number of residents.

Two Roads Diverge: Analyzing Growth Scenarios for the Twin Cities Region This June 1999 report was prepared by The Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) Minnesotans for An Energy-Efficient Economy (ME3) and 1000 Friends of Minnesota . The framework of the study uses a Sprawling Scenario and Smart Growth Scenario to describe options for the region's growth from 1995 to 2020. The goals of this study are to apply the scenarios to address the following issues:
  • How should the region accommodate its inevitable growth?
  • Can the region grow and retain its unique character at the same time?
  • What are the costs and benefits to the region of sprawling and smart growth?

U.S. military fights urban sprawl
Story Tools RELATED U.S. Dept. of Defense YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Military Bases Military Population Arizona or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? WASHINGTON (Reuters) Beset by enemies abroad, the U.S. military also faces an insidious threat to training and operations at home urban sprawl. Military bases throughout the country, many of which were once located in isolated areas, now find themselves enveloped by the inexorable spread of suburbs whose residents then complain about noise from planes or artillery, dust and danger of accidents. The Pentagon, the National Governors Association and many states are trying to address the issue with a mix of voluntary guidelines and laws designed to protect the ability of the military to carry out its missions. "All services in the military are experiencing this problem and are trying to work with local communities. Some are more cooperative than others," said one Pentagon official who deals with the issue. "Military installations are major economic engines and development has been crowding closer and closer and closer, sometimes to the point that either the mission has to cease or the base has to close. This is what uncontrolled urban sprawl is doing to us throughout the country," the official said.

Nighttime satellite images of the Earth showing city lights were merged with census data and a digital soils map in an effort to estimate the extent of developed land in the United States and the impact of development on soil resources. The urban areas defined by "city lights" had mean population densities of 1,033 persons/km and 427 housing units/km Introduction The postagricultural growth of human populations, combined with technological advancement, has led to the widespread transformation of natural ecosystems into those dominated and heavily managed by human beings. The potential impact of this process on Earth's biological and geochemical systems is a current subject of debate, and concerns range from those dealing with biosphere-atmosphere interactions and global climate change (Kates et al. 1990) to the preservation of biodiversity, sustainable development, economics, and agricultural productivity (Vitousek et al. 1986; Ehrlich and Wilson 1991; Raven 1991; Ehrlich et al. 1995).

Driven to Action
Stopping Sprawl in Your Community
Sprawl consumes large quantities of land, segregates houses from shops and workplaces, depends on cars, contributes to climate change and has little regard for the natural environment. Of course, most Canadians do not personally build the houses, streets, schools, parks or water lines that make cities possible. But we can set the rules for building sustainable cities and help make the plans that determine how we get to work, school and shopping.
The David Suzuki Foundation's report, Understanding Sprawl, and toolkit encourages communities to reshape urban areas. We need more dense and compact cities, with better bike paths and pedestrian friendly walkways. Learn more: Acrobat Reader 5 or above required for PDFs. Click here to download for free. Understanding Sprawl also contains a toolkit called Driven to Action to help citizens protect their communities from sprawling development. It consists of the following:
  • Getting started (PDF): A brief overview of what you can do to stop sprawl in your neighbourhood Sprawl facts (PDF): Learn why sprawl is a problem Shaping decisions (PDF): Find out how to contact politicians and decision makers and express your concerns Working with the media (PDF): Tips on how to get your message in the news Tools (PDF): Examples of tools to help you get started

A banner stretched across the charred site read: "If you build it - we will burn it. The E.L.F.s are mad." In e-mails to regional newspapers, the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) claimed responsibility for the conflagration that also damaged nearby homes. [
