A Plan for Urban and Community Forestry in Massachusetts The Massachusetts Urban and Community Forestry Program assists communities and nonprofit groups in protecting, growing, and managing community trees and forest ecosystems, with the ultimate aim of improving the environment and enhancing livability of all of Massachusetts' communities. We provide grants, technical assistance, training, and recognition awards to communities of all sizes throughout Massachusetts. The program also provides guidance on urban forestry policy issues at the state level. What is Urban and Community Forestry?
Urban and community forests are the trees, plants and associated ecosystems anywhere where people are - country roads in rural towns, new developments in the suburbs, or concrete neighborhoods in cities and old mill towns. Our landscape is a continuum from rural forest to city center. We live, work, play and learn all along this continuum.

THE RESPONSE OF OHIO'S NATIVE AND NATURALIZED TREES TO CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY

The American public generally has a love affair with trees. One manifestation of that love affair is the willingness of homeowners to pay 10 to 30 percent more for similar sized, wooded lots in the same subdivision. The assumption by the general public is that trees are trees. Surprise, surprise! Various trees species respond differently to construction. I remember a particularly sad situation where a property owner bought a wooded lot and snaked the house among the trees. The trees were killed by the construction activity. The homeowner then had to pay to have the trees cabled down since they were over the new residence. The homeowner ended up with a serpentine home on an open lot. Trees, unlike animals can't move. As a consequence a tree must adapt to the changes which occur during construction or die. Some trees are better at this than others. This will be the primary focus of this paper. The observations (Table 1.) are based on my experience with trees in disturbed sites which began while at Southside Nurseries (1958 to 1969) and continues through my twenty-six years in academics to date. Observations are further confined to native and naturalized trees since they are the ones which are likely to be found at new construction sites and they are the plants which the new owner will likely want to retain.

WHAT IS FORESTRY?
Concern about the fate of Earth's forests has never been greater. In the next 20 years, forest land managers working in areas ranging from wilderness to human dominated areas will be confronted with enormous challenges. Forestry and urban forestry graduates play a role in issues such as global climate change, preservation of biological diversity, community/urban ecology and meeting the renewable energy needs of the developing world.

    • Forest and wildlife stewardship
    • Urban and community forestry
    • Estate planning and family lands protection
    • Municipal and watershed natural resources inventories and planning

A combined research/extension program focuses on landscape characterization and forest fragmentation. FOREST RESOURCES IN CONNECTICUT Connecticut 370 years after settlement is 60% forested. Almost 90% of that forest is privately owned by some 115,000 individuals, families and land trusts. Our forests make major contributions to our economy and the quality of our lives. Annual production of over 70 million board feet of high quality timber provides the material for over 350 Connecticut industries that process wood. These industries contribute over $400 million annually to Connecticut's economy and export a wide variety of products around the globe. Our forests also provide the essential backdrop for Connecticut's $3.9 billion recreation/tourism industry, and produce and estimated 500,000 cords of firewood, 400,000 Christmas trees, 15,000 gallons of maple syrup and two million gallons of witch hazel astringent each year.
