The FAO Programme on Urban and Peri-Urban Forestry
With growing awareness of the social and environmental problems associated with rapid and uncontrolled urbanization in many parts of the developing world, ensuring the provision of basic human needs to city dwellers is likely to become a focal development issue for many years to come. With current demographic shifts, many of yesterday's rural poor are becoming today's urban poor. Among other things, they require fuelwood, low-cost construction materials and other wood products, easily accessible and affordable foods, and an adequate supply of clean water for drinking and for household use. There is a need to ensure not only that these people's demands for such goods are met, but also that negative environmental and social impacts of changing settlement patterns and land uses are minimized. In addition to goods and environmental services, urban forestry has the potential to provide amenity, recreational opportunities and other benefits for improved quality of life. The FAO Forestry programme, which until recently focused almost exclusively on rural forestry issues, launched a programme in urban and peri-urban forestry in 1993. The programme aims to document and disseminate information and to provide technical guidance to member countries in this field. Initially the efforts have been concentrated initially on examining the potential role of urban forestry in developing countries, on increasing awareness of the issue, and on improving documentation and accessibility of information on the subject. Urban forests reduce energy consumption, improve air and water quality as well as provide many other benefits.

The purpose of the Urban and Community Forestry Program is to create sustainable urban forests to help improve the quality of urban environments and the quality of life. Program staff work to:
  • Arrest the decline of urban forests through proper management and planting of trees in communities.
  • Improve and encourage employment opportunities associated with urban forestry activities.
  • Maximize the potential use of tree and vegetation cover to reduce energy consumption, improve air and water quality, and produce an assortment of products.
  • Encourage coordination of federal, state, and local efforts to promote citizen participation in the development and implementation of urban forestry activities. The structure and delivery of the program is built upon cooperative relationships between agencies, and contractual agreements with nonprofit organizations. Participating groups include the Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute (UFEI) which was developed by the Natural Resources Management department faculty within Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to address the increasing need for improved management of urban forests in California, the California ReLeaf organization, an association of non-profit tree planting groups, and the California Urban Forest Council which focuses on technical and institutional issues of urban forest management.

    Urban Forestry
Quercus palustris , pin oak, Boston Common
The urban forest plays an important role in Boston's landscape. The urban forest consists not only of all the treed areas in Boston (streets, yards, urban wilds, cemeteries, and parks) but also shrubs, grasses, herbaceous ground cover, soil, and our waterways. Trees contribute to the well being of our communities by:
    • moderating our local climate (did you know that on warm summer days, the air in urban areas can be 6-8°F hotter than its surrounding areas?)
    • filtering air pollutants,
    • storing storm water and reducing run-off (leaves, branches and bark intercept and store rainfall)
    • enhancing the biodiversity of species by providing wildlife habitat and attracting people to our livable city, and
    • connecting us to larger ecosystems through daily interactions with local green spaces.
    Street Trees
The Parks Department is the agency with regulatory and operational responsibilities for public shade trees. The Department’s maintenance program includes pruning, disease control, removals, and storm damage repairs. We plant public shade trees throughout Boston's 22 neighborhoods. Each street tree signifies the Mayor’s commitment to a greener Boston. The Department plants in the fall and in the spring. Planting locations are primarily chosen based on resident requests.
We hope that you will become stewards of Boston’s trees.

    History of our urban forest
Missoula's urban forest has been developing since the late 1800's. The earliest public trees, Norway maple, were brought in from the New England area. These trees were sent by steam engine to Bismarck/Mandan, North Dakota, transferred and shipped by paddle boat to Fort Benton, Montana, and then transferred to ox-drawn carriage for the last jump over the continental divide to Missoula, Montana.
Since this time Missoula has been named a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 10 years. We have also received a "Growth Award" for outstanding achievement in urban forestry for 4 consecutive years.
    What do we do?
The City of Missoula - Urban Forestry Division exists to maintain, enhance, and expand Missoula's urban forest. This is accomplished through tree pruning, planting, hazard removals and assorted other cultural treatments that improve the overall condition of Missoula's urban forest and consequently the quality of life in Missoula, Montana.
Missoula's urban forest is made up trees lining streets, in parks, river corridors, backyards, front

    The Urban Forest
What is an urban forest? It is all of the trees and other vegetation in and around a town, village or city. Traditionally it has referred to tree-lined streets, but an urban forest also includes trees in home landscapes, school yards, parks, riverbanks, cemeteries, vacant lots, utility rights-of-way, adjacent woodlands and anywhere else trees can grow in and around a community of any size . Shrubs, flowers, vines, ground covers, grass, and a variety of wild plants and animals also are part of the urban forest. Streets, sidewalks, buildings, utilities, soil, topography and, most importantly, people are an integral part of the urban forest. The urban forest is, in fact, an ecosystem Top of page

Even in areas where land costs are high and space is at a premium, trees soften the hard lines of manmade structures, add color, absorb excess noise, filter the air, provide shade, and may increase property values. Urban forests of Tennessee are experiencing new demands and pressures as interest in greenways, heat islands, and storm water control escalates. Additionally, encroachment by development and construction, invasions of gypsy moths and exotic plants like honeysuckle and privet, and problems with soil compaction threaten the health and vitality of urban forests.

Urban Forestry Assistance Program Last Updated on 2/21/2004
What is Urban Forestry? At first, the term "urban forestry" may seem confusing. Most people think that forests are just hundreds of acres of woodland in rural areas. However, over half of Kentuckians live in an urban setting, and they are surrounded by an urban forest. Urban trees are those in an individual's yard, lining city streets, forests in a local park, and trees along greenspace areas in and around cities. They provide a great deal of benefits to the urban landscape. Urban forests are a valuable asset to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. These forests should be managed for their social, economic and environmental benefits. Proper management can be obtained through a comprehensive urban forestry program that includes citizen support and a properly trained work force. Urban forests provide three main benefits. The economic benefits that urban forests provide are definitely very important. Trees attract tourists and businesses, by creating an inviting place to stay. They also increase the property value of homes and industrial properties; most people would choose a nicely shaded lot over a bare one! Finally, they can reduce the amount of electricity needed to heat and air condition homes and businesses.
