MILD SPRING FIRE SEASON REPORTED
When the 2004 Spring Forest Fire Season officially ended on May 31, it was recorded as one of the milder fire seasons in recent history. Division of Forestry officials say that 4,200 acres burned throughout the State this spring, the result of 500 wildfires. Of those 500 fires, 47% were caused by carelessness when debris burns were allowed to escape and set the surrounding woods on fire. Arson accounted for another 24% of all the forest fires that occurred during the spring season. Other causes of forest fires in West Virginia include equipment use, railroads, smokers and children.
“Frequent rainfall and quick response time were key factors in preventing more acres from being damaged by wildfire,” said State Forester Randy Dye. “Division of Forestry personnel always do an excellent job suppressing forest fires, and I cannot give enough credit to local volunteer fire departments for the role they play in assisting with wildfire suppression,” Dye continued.
FORESTRY OFFICIALS READY
IF CALLED TO HELP WITH WESTERN FIRES
With ample rainfall keeping down fires this spring, Forestry officials were able to concentrate on wildfire suppression training. In recent months, more than 230 people attended classes statewide to learn about wildland firefighting techniques. Individuals who complete this training are better able to assist in fighting forest fires in West Virginia and also are eligible to serve on western fire crews.

Overview Urban forests are all the trees and other vegetation that grow in places where people live, work and play, from small communities in rural areas to large metropolitan cities. This includes trees on public and private land, along streets, in residential areas, parks and commercial developments, and in other locations within a community. They may be planted by design or grow by accident (Miller 1988). This unit will help you understand and communicate the many advantages of and the expenses associated with the growth and management of urban forests. The major benefits are discussed in the first section of the unit, although it is impossible to list all the values received from trees. The costs of urban forestry are included in the next part with suggestions on how these costs can be reduced through education and proper planning. Longer Than a Lifetime Who Will Sit in the Shade?

Introduction and History
One of New Hampshire’s most unique resources is not found on a majestic mountain top... or in the state’s many lakes, rivers, and streams... or even within its wooded forests. It’s actually located on a quiet road on the outskirts of Portsmouth, just waiting to be discovered by anyone who values New Hampshire’s woodlands and natural resources. The Urban Forestry Center was established in 1976, and was given to the people of New Hampshire through a generous bequest by John Elwyn Stone, a direct descendant of John Langdon , the first governor of the state. Mr. Stone’s gift consists of 170 acres of field, forest, and saltmarsh, several buildings, and the annual interest income from a trust fund. The property is managed by the Division of Forests and Lands of the Department of Resources and Economic Development. The Center is used as a Tree Farm to demonstrate proper forest management, a bird and wildlife sanctuary, a garden and landscape demonstration site, and as a learning center offering information and programming in community forestry planning, forest management, ecology, tree and plant identification, and wildlife stewardship.

Asian Long-Horned Beetle
The Asian Long-Horned Beetle (ALHB) which has devastated the tree canopies in parts of New York City and Chicago since the late 1990's was discovered September 2003 in parts of the City of Toronto and the City of Vaughan.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the City of Toronto, the City of Vaughan and other partners, are implementing an aggressive campaign to identify infested locations and eradicate the ALHB. This is the first confirmed infestation of Asian Long-Horned Beetle attacking trees in Canada.
The regulated place includes the area bordered in the north by Rutherford Road; in the east by Dufferin Street and Allen Road; in the south by Hwy. 401 and Hwy. 409; and in the west by Hwy. 27. Maps of the regulated and generally infestated areas can by viewed by the following links (Regulated Area Map Generally Infestated Area Map).
