Return to Industry Projects Index EH101 TRANSPORT HELICOPTER, ITALY/UNITED KINGDOM In July 2002, AgustaWestland signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin to jointly market and produce a version of the helicopter for the US market, the US101. Team US101, led by Lockheed Martin, has proposed the US101 helicopter for the US Marine One presidential transport fleet requirement. DESIGN The rugged modular structure incorporates crashworthy and damage-tolerant features, including a five-blade main rotor, four-blade teetering rotor and main lift frame, which includes multiple primary and secondary load paths. The fuselage is mainly of aluminium-lithium construction. The aerodynamic rotor blades are constructed from carbon/glass with nomex honeycomb and rohacell foam. Active vibration control of the structural response (ACSR) uses a vibration-cancelling technique. COCKPIT The cockpit is equipped with armoured crew seats able to withstand an impact velocity of 35ft per second. Dual flight controls are provided for the pilot and copilot, but the helicopter is capable of being flown by a single pilot. The pilot's mission display unit is supplied by Northrop Grumman (formerly Litton). The electronic instrument system includes six high-definition, full-colour displays, together with an optional mission display. A Forward Looking Infrared system display and digital map can be installed. Portuguese and Danish Air Force helicopters will have FLIR Systems Star SAFIRE thermal imagers. To facilitate this process, EADS North America, the U.S. holding company of EADS, the world's second largest aerospace and defense company, hosted an A400M U.S. Suppliers Conference in Washington, D.C. this week. The conference attracted managers from more than 30 U.S. companies interested in competing for A400M contracts. Also participating were representatives from the U.S. Departments of State, Commerce and Defense, agencies involved in approving American technology and hardware for export. The A400M is an EADS-lead program. The prime contractor is AIRBUS Military. Updated April 5, 2002 Printer-Friendly Version America’s armed forces are being slowly reshaped by ‘transformational’ initiatives that will increase their ability to fight the wide range of diverse conflicts the 21st Century will bring. But many times the United States either cannot or should not act alone. Allies are of vital importance, and the United Kingdom could well be seen as the closest and most reliable. But is British military transformation, arguably only begun in 1998, adequate to redesign Britain’s forces for the challenges the War on Terror, and other conflicts, will hold? The British government’s response to the changes in the international security environment caused by the end of the Cold War started to become apparent in July 1990 when the ‘Options for Change’ force reduction plan was first outlined. Over the next six years, armed forces strength dropped from 306,000 to 226,000 and some forces were re-orientated toward a more mobile reaction role, principally within the Army, which took on the leadership of NATO’s Rapid Reaction Corps. However, the orientation of the Armed Forces remained primarily NATO and European operations.
