An Invitation to the Emerald Isle
Ireland - the "Emerald Isle" - is both a geographically and culturally inspiring land. It's lush, green, and craggy mountains, rolling hills, and seaside cliffs command one's attention; but its legends, folklore, music, art and literature will captivate one's emotions. It is an island with as rich a history and as diverse a culture as writers, painters and musicians can depict.
As you may know, Ireland is a nation with a complicated history affected by tensions that continue to influence the present; however, today's Ireland is a series of treasures awaiting your discovery! Ireland is not mired in the past but is energetically growing, thriving and improving in harmony with its own history. Today's Ireland is an intriguing mix of art, literature, music, sports, politics, religion, technology and more. As a student in Ireland today, you will be on the cusp of radical modernization and energy without failing to grasp the strength of the historical culture that is endemic to the island nation. Academic Programs International (API) invites you to view Ireland through our eyes - here is your invitation to the Emerald Isle!

I am a lover of things allegorical. For those who may be unfamiliar with this concept, an allegory is a story or picture or other symbol which appears to be one thing but stands for something else, used to illustrate a point. Lots of things can be used allegorically, but I happen to be especially fond of the things of folklore and mythology. I'm not overly fond of fairies, but I have nothing against them. I do rather like dragons, showy, arrogant creatures that they are, and valkyries and I seem to have a great deal in common. Pegasi are pleasant (really, according to proper Greek mythology, there was only one Pegasus, but let's not quibble), satyrs and nymphs are entertaining (and potentially a great deal of fun, if you take my meaning), and wyverns are a particular personal favorite of mine. Overall, I like to think about these things which are not literal, but might be able to exist in an allegorical way if we gave them a chance.

Bigler and Will Bagley Average review score: Mormon Battalion narrative Several eye-witness sourced perspectives David Bigler and Will Bagley successfully collaborated to bring together a series of previously unpublished documents, as well as some published ones, in an outstanding collection of firsthand accounts and other primary sources on and about the Mormon Battalion's epic 1846 U.S. - Mexican War march and their role in securing the Southwest from Mexican control and claiming the territory that would become the states of Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah thereby fulfilling the mandate inherent in the concept of "Manifest Destiny". Several eye-witness sourced perspectives are provided including the journal of teenager William Pace, letters from some of the women associated with the battalion; as well as military and government correspondence. Army Of Israel: Mormon Battalion Narratives is a superlatively presented and informative contribution to American history in general, and the role of a unique military command in particular. this is good history From time to time, a historian will write a book, as opposed to an author writing history. And when TWO historians write a book, you get what Bigler and Bagley have created here. The entire series, "Forgotten Kingdom" is dynamite, we are fortunate to have these books available to us.

    ENGLISH FAIRY TALES
THE Fairy Tales of England have been treated in rather a step-motherly fashion. That they once existed in tolerable numbers there are still traces in the library list of Captain Cox, published by the New Shakespeare Society, among others, and in odd references in literature and in chap-books. But in the middle of last century the genius of Charles Perrault captivated English and Scotch children with as much force as or, probably, with even more force than he had entranced French ones. Cinderella and Puss in Boots and their companions ousted Childe Rowland and Mr Fox and Catskin. The superior elegance and clearness of the French tales replaced the rude vigour of the English ones. What Perrault began, the Grimms completed. Tom Tit Tot gave way to Rumpelstiltschen, the three Sillies to Hansel and Grethel, and the English Fairy Tale became a of Perrault and the Grimms. This would not have been so serious if English provincial life had been as conservative and tenacious as the provincial life of France, Italy, or Germany. But railways and the telegraph have disintegrated our provincial life much more than continental. And for various reasons the English peasant has never had so vivid a social life as the Bauer or Jacques Bonhomme. Consequently there is less hope of recovering the lost fairy tales of England to such a degree as has been accomplished with such brilliant success in almost every European country during the past thirty years, or still more conspicuously among the Gaels of Scotland by the late J. F. Campbell.

Japan Customer Reviews (1328) Greatest Fantasy Novel of all Times When I was in the seventh grade my English teacher made us read this novel. I am forever indebted to this teacher for introducing me to one of the greatest fantasy novelists of all time. In this delightful tale, Tolkien introduces a new world called "Middle Earth." "Middle Earth" is a place where dwarves, elves, wizards, dragons, and hobbits live. Of course, in this story, Bilbo Baggins is the consummate hobbit who runs off on a dangerous and exciting adventure (something hobbits do not normally do) with a clan of dwarfs. These adventures lead to dangerous encounters with giant spiders, goblins, etc. Moreover, Bilbo encounters an odd slimy creature named Gollum, who possess a ring that holds great magical power (an item which plays a vital role in the trilogy titled "The Lord of the Rings"). Gollum is so obsessed with this ring, which he calls "precious," that he will do anything to get it back from Bilbo (who found it on the ground and later took it from Gollum after a contest of wits and wisdom). Gollum, of course, shows up again in "The Lord of the Rings."
