General Information John, London, England There's no law against going topfree in the UK and many British women go topless abroad. However it seems women are more conservative on home soil and may wear a top in Britain when they wouldn't in Greece or Spain. Going topless isn't going to get you into trouble but you may find yourself in a conspicuous minority. Alan, Marietta, GA

It affects registration procedures for overseas electors. There are three major changes in the new Act:
  • The new legislation allows for postal voting. The new legislation allows applications to be countersigned by any British Citizen, (for example, a Consular Officer if they are satisfied that the applicant is a British Citizen resident overseas.) The new legislation establishes rolling electoral registers. From 16 February 2001, any British Citizen resident overseas can apply for registration at any time during the year.
  • In the previous legislation, a British Citizen wishing to apply for registration as an overseas elector had to have been registered on an electoral register at an address in the UK within the 20 years prior to their application. This qualifying period has been reduced to 15 years. How to register: An "Application to Register as an Overseas Elector" form must be completed. Contact your nearest British Consulate General to obtain the form and an explanatory leaflet. (There will be a small charge.)

Particle Physics Outreach in the UK
There are various initiatives for publicising research in particle physics in the UK, many supported directly by the main funding body for particle physics research, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC)
    • PPARC funds a national particle physics web page ( ppUK ), which is managed by a small consortium of particle physicists. The aim is for this to be the first port of call for anyone in the UK interested in particle physics. PPARC strongly encourages research groups to publicise their work. Groups are allowed to spend up to 1 per cent of their research grants on publicity and educational activities. PPARC also operates two awards schemes. The "Small Awards" scheme, is open to everyone (not only grant holders), for grants up to 10k pounds for projects to raise public awareness of particle physics and astronomy. The "National Awards" scheme awards larger amounts, up to around 100k pounds, for 2-3 national projects each year. One of the first projects to receive a National Award is the "Particle Physics Exhibits Project" which will provide a resource of hands-on exhibits and displays in particle physics, for use by particle physicists in exhibitions, science shows, open days etc. PPARC also directly funds a particle physicist with media experience ( Dr. Christine Sutton
