United Arab Emirates
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: The Trucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states - Abu Zaby, 'Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah, Dubayy, and Umm al Qaywayn - merged to form the UAE. They were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah. The UAE's per capita GDP is not far below the GDPs of the leading West European nations. Its generosity with oil revenues and its moderate foreign policy stance have allowed it to play a vital role in the affairs of the region. Location and Geography The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven independent states lying along the West central coast of the Arabian Gulf. It is bordered by the Arabian Gulf in the North, Oman in the East, and Saudi-Arabia in the West. Apart from a mountain range in the North and the scattered oases, much of the country’s territory is made up of a sandy desert and salt marshes. The terrain is flat and barren. The coastal plain that merges into rolling sand dunes of vast desert wasteland lies to the East. Only two percent of the land is arable. The climate is desert where the Eastern mountains are somewhat cooler. It is hot and humid along the coast and drier in the inland. Rainfall is low, however coastal humidity is high. Due to the climate, vegetation is scarce only with low shrubs that offer forage to nomadic herds.

The United Arab Emirates lies on the east of the Arabian peninsula, with a coastline of over 700 kilometers on the Gulf of Oman .It was founded in 1971,
as a fedration of seven emirates : Abu Dhabi,Dubai,Sharjah,Ras al Khaimah, Um al Quwain and Ajman, which lie on the Arabian Gulf coast, and Fujairah,
the only one on the Gulf of Oman. The federal capital is the city of AbuDhabi. It is bordered to the ea st and sou th by the sultanate of Oman and to the west and north west Kingdom of Saudia Arabia and the state of Qatar. The majority of the land is arid desert and semi-desert, reaching the edge of the great sand desert of Rub Khali, in the south west, and gradually becoming gravel plains further north. A scatter of small oases and wells permits desert agriculture, which also thrives on the sub-montane plains of the western side of the Hajar Montains, which form a central spine running roughly north the country. On the East Coast, a narrow coastal plain divides the mountains from the Indian Ocean. The UAE also has over 100 islands, some large, like Abu Dhabi itself, Abu al Abyadh and Zirku, and other little more than sandbanks and small rocky outcrops. Sir Banyas, in Abu Dhabi's western region, is a wildlife reserve, with over 10,000 gazelles and other animals, planted with more than two million trees.

History and Geography
History
Beginning in 1820, Great Britain entered into treaties with various leaders in the area out of a desire to protect its ships in the Gulf and the Indian Ocean. In addition, Britain was allowed to handle foreign relations for the area known as "the Trucial States" because of the Perpetual Maritime Truce which the Arab rulers signed with the British in 1853. The United Arab Emirates became fully independent on 2 December 1971, although Ras al-Khaimah did not join until 1972. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi since 1966, was elected first President of the UAE in 1971. Overseas, he has gained a reputation as a sagacious statesman, keen to promote conciliation where possible, but at the same time firm on the side of justice and international law.
Geography
In the south and west of the country, the land is mainly sand dunes and salt flats with the occasional traditional desert oasis. The largest oases are in Al Ain, 160km east of Abu Dhabi, and Liwa in the southwest. In the northern part of the country, the sand dunes yield to gravel plains formed by the Hajar Mountain range, dating back about 200 million years. The mountains themselves rise to a height of over 3000 m and extend from the UAE south into Oman. The east coast is essentially a fertile plain where rainfall and subterranean water have allowed agriculture to be practiced for thousands of years. Along the coast, there are long, unspoiled beaches stretching for kilometers. On the Arabian Gulf, over 100 islands and numerous shallow inlets add to the scenery; mangrove trees are common as well as spawning fish and birds.

United Arab Emirates Climate
Temperature change throughout the seasons and the coastal zones are much more buffered, whereas high differences are found in the southern areas .In winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) coastal areas are slightly warmer (>20 °C) than terrestrial areas, and the eastern mountains (18-20 °C). In spring (Mar, Apr, May) the mountains and Gulf Coast are still relatively cool ( <27 °C), but temperature in the southern terrestrial areas and the East Coast are relatively high (27-29 °C or higher). This is even more obvious in the summer months (Jun, Jul, and Aug), when temperatures of the central desert exceed 35 °C and the mountain and coastal temperatures stay below 33 °C. In autumn temperatures all over the country are very similar (27-29 °C), except for some location in the mountains, where it is slightly cooler ( 29 °C). Generally the average monthly rainfall is considerably higher in the mountain region (140-200 mm), and the East Coast (100-140 mm), in comparison to the gravel plains (100-120 mm) and the lowest average records are from the West Coast ( <60 mm). Thus, there is a continuous gradient of increasing precipitation from the southwest towards the Northeast. However, due to the average precipitation regime we can expect more rainfall towards the mountains, and towards the northeast.
