DIVISION IV. UNITARIANISM IN TRANSYLVANIA
CHAPTER XXI
Down to the Beginning of Unitarianism in Transylvania in 1564
Transylvania formed (until the World War) the eastern quarter of the old kingdom of Hungary, to which it bore much the same relation as Scotland to England. It is about half as large as the state of Maine, or a quarter larger than Switzerland; hedged in on all sides by the lofty snow-capped Carpathians and other mountains, forest-covered, as the name of the country implies. It has a great variety of grand and beautiful natural scenery, and has been called the Switzerland of Hungary. One traveler writes that whereas other lands are beautiful in spots, Transylvania is all beauty; while another calls it a sort of earthly paradise. It has an agreeable climate, a fertile soil, and great mineral wealth; and ever since Roman times its mines have supplied a large part of the gold of Europe. century to settle and guard the frontier country, which repeated wars had left a wilderness; Christianity is said to have reached Hungary even before Trajan, and the Goths in the fourth century fostered the Arianism which they professed. At the end of the eighth century, however, the Avars were converted to Catholic Christianity under Charlemagne, and when Transylvania was conquered in 1002 by St. Stephen, the first Christian king of Hungary, its inhabitants perforce accepted his religion. Hungary was too far away from Rome, however, and the Hungarians were of too independent spirit, for the Roman Church to gain complete power there. The simple, scriptural form of Christianity taught by the Albigenses and Waldenses was widely spread from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, and the reformation of the Hussites won many adherents a century later; and much persecution failed to suppress these heresies. The soil was thus well prepared for the Protestant Reformation.

Unitarianism Is A Cult?
posted at 09:22 AM by Hope Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn has denied tax-exempt status to a Unitarian Universalist congregation in Denison.
Questions about the issue were referred to Jesse Ancira, the comptroller's top lawyer, who said Strayhorn has applied a consistent standard and then stuck to it. For any organization to qualify as a religion, members must have "simply a belief in God, or gods, or a higher power," he said.
Despite Texas losing a court challenge (twice) over the same issue - the Ethical Society of Austin was denied tax-exempt status by the former Comptroller for the same reason - Strayhorn has no intention of modifying the standard.
Strayhorn vows to continue the legal fight to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary. "Otherwise, any wannabe cult who dresses up and parades down Sixth Street on Halloween will be applying for an exemption," she said in a April 23 news release.
That's right. Unitarian Universalism is just a cult. I bet

UNITARIANISM English Unitarian periodical literature begins with Priestleys Theological Repository (1769-1788), and includes the Monthly Repository (1806-1838), The Christian Reformer (1834-1863), the Prospective Review (1845-1854), the National Review (1855-1864), the Theological Review (1864-1879), and now the Hibbert Journal, one of the enterprises of the Hibbert Trust, founded by Robert Hibbert (1770-1849) and originally designated the Anti-Trinitarian Fund. This came into operation in 1853, awards scholarships and fellowships, supported (1878-1894) ,an annual lectureship, and has maintained (from 1894) a chair of ecclesiastical history at Manchester College. The general activities of the body are conducted partly by its association (Essex Street, Strand), partly by its (triennial) National Conference, established 1882. It has two weekly papers, the Inquirer and the Christian Life. Irish Unitarian periodical literature began in 1832 with the Bible Christian, followed by the Irish Unitarian Magazine, the Christian Unitarian, the Disciple and now the Non-subscribing Presbyterian. Unitarianism
Unitarianism emerged out of Christianity based on a belief in the oneness of God, a rejection of the doctrine of the Trinity , and a belief in the moral authority, but not the deity, of Jesus . Unitarians can be more generally characterized through the ages as free thinkers and dissenters , evolving their beliefs in the direction of freedom, tolerance, rationalism and humanism Modern-day Unitarians in the US and Canada typically use the term Unitarian Universalist or [UU], and many do not consider themselves Christians. Unitarianism as a system of Christian thought and religious observance has its basis, as opposed to that of orthodox Trinitarianism , in the unipersonality of the Godhead , i.e. in the idea that the Godhead exists in the person of the Father alone. Unitarians trace their history back to the Apostolic age, claim for their doctrine a prevalence during the ante- Nicene period, and by help of Arian communities and individual thinkers trace a continuity of their views to the present time. Whatever the accuracy of this lineage, the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century saw in many European countries an outbreak more or less serious of anti-Trinitarian opinion.

What is Unitarianism?
Unitarianism
traces its origins back to the earliest years of Christianity and places it’s emphasis on the individual being open to all new insights and knowledge of the true nature of divine truth. We are therefore unwilling to adopt any fixed articles of belief.
Unitarianism
is more an attitude of mind rather than a confession of faith. It requires independence, open-mindedness and reliance in the individual’s own ability to evolve a positive personal relationship with divinity.
Unitarians
in worship share varied ideas of the traditional and the new, retaining throughout a critical approach based on personal experience in many areas of local national and global concern, Unitarians extend their Faith in freedom and humanity in practical ways.
Unitarians
respect the great spiritual masters of history such as Moses, Buddha, Jesus and Mohammed, taking notice of their positive teachings while knowing that, at the last, we must all walk our own paths to truth.
Unitarianism
today exists in many lands as an expression of Nonconformist Dissenting Protestantism. Here in North Lancashire, it’s roots are to be found in seventeenth century English Presbyterianism.

http://www.stalybridgeunitarians.org.uk/units.htm
About Unitarianism UNITARIAN ROOTS The roots of the Unitarian movement lie principally in the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. At that time, people in many countries across Europe began to claim:
· The right to read and interpret the Bible for themselves.
· The right to seek a direct relationship with God, without the mediation of priest or church.
· The right to set their own conscience against the claims of religious institutions.
Many came to question 'orthodox' Christian doctrine and to affirm beliefs of their own. These included:
· The Unity or unipersonality of God, as opposed to the doctrine of the Trinity - hence the name 'Unitarian'.
· The humanity, as opposed to the deity, of Christ.
· The worth of human beings, as opposed to ideas of original sin, inherited guilt and innate depravity.
· The universal salvation of all souls, as opposed to the doctrine that most of humanity is predestined to damnation.
The earliest organised Unitarian movements were founded in the 16th century in Poland and Transylvania. In Britain, a number of early radical reformers professed Unitarian beliefs in the 16th and 17th centuries, some suffering imprisonment and martyrdom. An organised Unitarian movement did not emerge in Britain until the late 18th century. The first avowedly Unitarian church in Britain was opened in Essex Street, London, in 1774. Denominational structures were developed during the 19th century, finally uniting in the present General Assembly in 1928.

Is Unity Like Unitarianism? Contents Main Page FAQ Introduction Creation Original Sin ... Bible Updated: 11/4/2003
Is Unity anything like Unitarian-Universalism?
Unity describes itself as Practical Christianity/Spirituality, which is the knowing that spiritual principles work in our everyday lives if we live/practice them. Spirituality is not a Sunday affair—but a way of living (demonstrated, for example, by the practice of tithing of time, talent and treasure to that which serves our highest good—our spiritual aware-ness—resulting (per principle) in our being blessed ten-fold).
Unity is often confused with the Unitarian Universalist Church. We are similar in our inclusiveness, but Unity has some distinctions (see below). Unitarianism grew out of the protestant tradition around a belief in One God (vs. the Trinity). Jesus was an entity sent by God (he wasn’t God) on a divine mission–and thus is to be followed, not worshiped. The Universalists also grew out of the protestant tradition around a belief in Universal Salvation–God embraces ALL people–not a particular religion or practice. The two joined together in 1961–holding that Truth is ultimately determined through personal experience, conscience and reason.
While in total agreement about One God and Universal Salvation–Unity also teaches that
Tthe revelation of Truth includes personal direct revelation from Spirit (see “Access to God”above);

By 1820, provinces throughout the region centralized their power by replacing the cabildos with provincial governments. Buenos Aires, no longer serving the administrative role of the Viceroyalty , turned its substantial resources towards implementing liberal polices within its borders. Led by Bernardino Rivadavia , the province enacted legislation supporting universal male suffrage, freedom of the press, religious toleration, tax reform, European immigration, floating interest rates, and public education. To a lesser extent, many of the same acts were carried out in the interior, although most included a tariff tax in imports to protect local industry. A national congress assembled in 1824 considered the issue of national unity. They passed a law that provinces would govern themselves until a national constitution could be signed. As the United Provinces, they elected the liberal Rivadavia to the presidency of the republic. He quickly implemented many of the liberal measures that were in place in Buenos Aires. These policies, particularly those against the church, turned provincial opinion against Rivadavia. In 1827 Rivadavia resigned the presidency, effectively ending national and liberal governance for a generation. Into the void stepped

BY KEYWORD:

Unitarianism is a branch of Christianity. Unitarians believe that God is only one person. Unitarians reject the Trinity and do not believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God. Followers of Unitarianism also deny the concepts of original sin and of eternal punishment for sins committed on earth. They contend that there is no basis for either of these beliefs in the Bible. They do practice communion, but they do not view it as a formal sacrament. Rather, communion symbolizes Unitarians' devotion to living in a godly manner. Unitarians arrived in the Northwest Territory during the late 1700s and the early 1800s. Like the Universalists who held similar beliefs, the Unitarians remained small in number. Most of their followers resided in larger cities, like Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus. One of the more prominent Unitarians of the early 1800s was Nathan Guilford, the first superintendent of Cincinnati schools and the man primarily responsible for establishing free public education in Ohio. Like Guilford, most Unitarians in Ohio came from the upper social classes. Many of these people believed that the other Christian faiths were irrational in their blind acceptance of the Trinity.
