Unitarianism is an open-minded and individualistic approach to religion that gives scope for a very wide range of beliefs and doubts. It has its roots in the Jewish and Christian traditions but is open to spiritual, cultural and intellectual insights from all humanity. Religious freedom for each individual is at the heart of Unitarianism. Everyone is free to search for meaning in life in a responsible way and to reach their own conclusions. As a result Unitarianism is a religion without a creed:
  • it has no standard set of beliefs Unitarians believe that religious truth is not necessarily or primarily laid down either in scriptures, by a holy person or by a religious institution no individual or group in Unitarianism makes an exclusive claim to the truth within certain core values each Unitarian can believe what they feel is right.
The name Unitarians are so called because
  • they insist on the oneness of God they affirm the essential unity of humankind and of creation
An approach not a creed Unitarianism stresses an approach to religion rather than a particular belief-system: A religion where individuals are free to hold a wide range of beliefs is not what people have come to expect - surely believers are united by believing the same things.

Unitarianism
Unitarianism is a doctrine of God which asserts that the singleness and simplicity of God are contradicted by the doctrine of the Trinity , and therefore rejects the doctrine of the Trinity. Many Christians hold that a denial of the trinity and a subsequent lack of belief in the godhead of Jesus Christ is not a position tenable for Christians. Further, a baptism is not valid unless the trinitarian formula is used in its administration, Therefore many Christians regard Unitarianism as a non-Christian religion.
Origins
Unitarianism as a system of Christian thought and religious observance has its basis, as opposed to that of orthodox Trinitarianism, in the unipersonality of the Godhead, i.e. in the idea that the Godhead exists in the person of the Father alone. Unitarians trace their history back to the Apostolic age, claim for their doctrine a prevalence during the ante- Nicene period, and by help of Arian communities and individual thinkers trace a continuity of their views to the present time. Whatever the accuracy of this lineage, the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century saw in many European countries an outbreak more or less serious of anti-Trinitarian opinion. Suppressed as a rule in individual cases, this type of doctrine ultimately became the badge of separate religious communities, in Poland (extinct), in Hungary, and at a much later date in England.

46. Socinianism, Arianism And Unitarianism (No. 185)
The distinction between Trinitarianism and unitarianism is that homage to Christ is in Socinianism, Arianism and unitarianism (No. 185).
http://www.logon.org/english/s/p185.html
Socinianism, Arianism and Unitarianism (No. 185) (Edition 1.0 19961221-19961221) The term Socinianism has been applied quite indiscriminately over a large body of anti-trinitarian doctrine. The Godhead is the central issue of Socinianism. From both the Catholic and the Unitarian point of view, they rightly held that God is absolutely simple. They concluded that distinction of persons is destructive to that simplicity. From this logic, they denied the Trinity as logically unsound. The distinction between Trinitarianism and Unitarianism is that homage to Christ is in view of his relationship to the Father and of a secondary type - whereas, the Trinitarians hold it is of the cult of the latria , where he is in fact God, as the Father is God. Christian Churches of God PO Box 369, WODEN ACT 2606, AUSTRALIA Email: secretary@ccg.org 1996 Wade Cox) This paper is available from the World Wide Web page:
http://www.logon.org and http://www.ccg.org Socinianism, Arianism and Unitarianism The term Socinianism has been applied quite indiscriminately over a large body of anti-trinitarian doctrine. The term is derived from Lelius Socinius (1526-1562) and his nephew Faustus Socinius (1539-1604), natives of Sienna. The sect arose before Faustus came into contact with it, but it owes its individuality to him. A secret society was formed at Vicenza in the diocese of Venice to discuss the Trinity. Among the members were George Blandrata (physician), Alciatus, Gentilis and Lelio Socinius. Lelius (or Lelio) Socinius was a priest of Sienna and the friend of Bullinger, Calvin and Melancthon. The object of the society was the promotion of anti-Trinitarianism. The society was broken up and its members fled to Poland where they were again persecuted.

The doctrine of Unitarianism is a Christian belief which developed in opposition to the orthodox Christian doctrine of trinitarianism. The first use of the word appears to have been in Transylvania in 1568, when the Reformation was a mere 50 years old. With roots in the Radical wing of the Reformation of the early 16th century, Unitarianism has long pursued a more rationalistic approach to religion and Christianity. According to Unitarianism, God has but a single personality and form, while Jesus was only a human. Other traditional doctrines rejected by Unitarians are the Fall, Atonement, and eternal punishment in hell. Unitarianism moved from a doctrine to a denomination in the early 19th century in England and the United States through the work of Christians who adhered to Arminian Theology, and in the 1960s American Unitarianism dissociated itself from Christianity generally. For Unitarians, religion is treated as something like a refined moral sensibility rather than a commitment to a life-long spiritual transformation as in some Christian groups.

The importance of the concept in theology is that, God as a simple being is not divisible, and thus, he is present in his entirety everywhere that he is present, if he is present anywhere. In light of this idea, Thomas Aquinas wrote that, because God is infinitely simple , he can only appear to the finite mind as though he were infinitely complex.

UNITARIANISM IN AMERICA
A History of its Origin and Development

GEORGE WILLIS COOKE

PREFACE.
The present work may appear to some of its readers to have been written in a sectarian spirit, with a purpose to magnify the excellences of Unitarianism, and to ignore its limitations. Such has not been the purpose I have kept before me; but, rather, my aim has been to present the facts candidly and justly, and to treat of them from the standpoint of a student of the religious evolution of mankind. Unitarianism in this country presents an attempt to bring religion into harmony with philosophy and science, and to reconcile Christianity with the modern spirit. Its effort in this direction is one that deserves careful consideration, especially in view of the unity and harmony it has developed in the body of believers who accept its teachings. The Unitarian body is a small one, but it has a history of great significance with reference to the future development of Christianity. The names of those who accept Unitarianism have not been given in this book in any boastful spirit. A faith that is often spoken against may justify itself by what it has accomplished, and its best fruits are the men and women who have lived in the spirit of its teachings. In presenting the names of those who are not in any way identified with Unitarian churches, the purpose has been to suggest the wide and inclusive character of the Unitarian movement, and to indicate that it is not represented merely by a body of churches, but that it is an individual way of looking at the facts of life and its problems.

Europe, at a time when the breakdown of one monopoly in organized
religion first made it possible for independent thinkers to begin to
express themselves. Even so, they were persecuted by Catholics and
Protestants alike, and were able to set up Unitarian congregations only
in the freer atmosphere of Poland and Transylvania. Later it became
possible to organize in the English-speaking world. In this country, the
first congregation came into being in Montreal in 1832. At a national level, the congregations across Canada are part of the
Canadian Unitarian Council, which resulted from the rapid expansion of
the movement in the middle years of the 20th century. Prior to that time

Brotherhood of the Cross and Star and Unitarianism
Brotherhood of the Cross and Star (BCS) beliefs come principally from the selection, reinterpretation and rejection by one man, Olumba Olumba Obu (born 1918), of traditional African religious practices and Christianity. Originating in Nigeria in the late 1950's from a healing and prayer group of largely women and children, the movement has spread to a membership of over two million in various parts of the world. Believers say that BCS itself is co-eternal with God, however. A principal belief strand can be described as totemism plus reincarnation. Human beings come from animals, fishes, birds, trees, the Sun, moon, etc. and aspects of our behaviour relate to the specific origins each of us have. We have souls doubled in animals, trees, etc., which is why Obu so promotes vegetarianism. 'All the fishes killed daily represent the number of human beings who die daily in various parts of the world,' he says. So I would have thought eating some plants kills humans. Anyway, children are the spirits of the apparantly dead but come to earth again through women. God can appear as animals or people too, a view with origins in witchcraft and sorcery. Yet, despite all this, Obu attacks witchcraft! He condemns churches which have been seeking dialogue with regional practices. He condemns churches anyway from a black religious (and economic) nationalist point of view. Whites siezed the word of God from Africa and non-indigenous churches have been the agents of white trickery.

UNITARIANISMWHAT IS IT?
UNITARIANISMWHAT IS IT? A sermon by
Rev. A. Powell Davies, D.D.
Minister, All Souls' Church (Unitarian)
Washington, DC February 24, 1946 In Time news magazine a week ago there appeared a letter criticizing an article on Unitarianism which had recently been printed in that journal. The article had implied that Unitarians hold certain beliefs in common; the letter denied that this was possible. "Unitarians," it said, "are so divergent in their beliefs that it is almost impossible to set down any one thing upon which the group does agree." Which is, of course, as any thoughtful person might expect, a gross exaggeration. No movement holds together for as long a time as has Unitarianism without substantial areas of agreement. Yet, the mistake which the writer of the letter makes is a very common one. Because traditional churches are based upon a system of required beliefs, i.e., upon a creed, he assumes that a church without a creed can have no basis of agreement. Whereas, for Unitarians, the deliberate intention not to have a creed is itself a most emphatic basis of agreement. Let us look at that for a moment or two. For understanding Unitarianism, it makes a good beginning.
