63. Diving And Underwater Photography
Why underwater photography? By Peter Rowlands. OCEAN OPTICS, specialists in your underwater photography. 13 Northumberland Avenue, London WC2N 5AQ.
http://www.oceanoptics.co.uk/intro.html
Why underwater photography? By Peter Rowlands THE MAJORITY of divers were attracted to the sport of underwater exploration through the images of others. The films, books and articles by pioneers such as Jacques Cousteau, Hans Hass and Valery and Ron Taylor revealed the silent world to startling effect and today's films on TV continue to do so. In the early days, there were few underwater photographers. The equipment which was available was expensive, clumsy and required hard won experience to use well. In the Nineties all that has changed. Many more divers take underwater photographs and the equipment is well designed, user friendly and, in real terms, more affordable and better value. There are many reasons to take pictures underwater. A few of our clients are land photographers who take up diving purely to take pictures underwater. Some are diving instructors who want to be able to teach underwater photography or use pictures to illustrate their courses. Others are scientists who use underwater photography for identification purposes or to record behaviour. Environmental groups rely on underwater pictures to draw attention to their concerns and campaigns, such as the threats to marine life posed by drift netting. Commercial divers make extensive use of photography as an inspection tool to assess underwater structures.

Underwater Photography
by Andrew Dawson Underwater photography can be incredibly rewarding. There are countless bizarre, colorful animals, shimmering coral reefs, and towering kelp forests that beg to be photographed. It is also very equipment-intensive, often involves travel to remote locations, and can be totally aggravating. Like many people, I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau specials, and scuba diving was something I always wanted to do. Once I tried it, I was completely hooked. I also knew from the very first dive that it wasn't going to be enough to just be there, I was going to have to photograph it too. Giant Sea Fan, Aquatica F4 housing, Nikkor 18mm/3.5 Damselfish, Aquatica F4 housing, Nikkor 105mm/2.8 Micro Something to keep in mind: underwater flash units, often referred to as strobes, are not optional equipment! The loss of color through the water column is a problem that will never go away. It would be safe to say that over 90% of underwater images were made with strobe. In theory, if you were less than 5-10 feet down in clear water it might not matter, but this will severely limit what subjects are available. Even at shallow depths, small amounts of strobe will help with saturation and detail. The problem is much too severe to be simply fixed in Photoshop. Color filters won't cut it either. For a given filter, there would be an ideal depth/subject/distance/exposure that might work, but your chances of bringing all those things together are mighty slim.

Underwater Photography Primer
by Philip Greenspun Home Learn : One Article Underwater photography combines the challenges of (1) trying to make an aesthetic statement that hasn't been made by thousands of photographers who've dedicated decades of their life to the craft, with (2) trying to stay alive.
The easiest way
Get into submarine. Get out camera. Point. Shoot. Here are some examples from my 800' dive in the Cayman Islands
The second easiest way
Snorkeling is much simpler than SCUBA diving. The key to snorkeling is to remember that the human body will always float. It just doesn't float high enough that you can breathe easily. However, if you add a few inches of extension to your mouth, your natural floating position will be more than sufficient for breathing. You can thus stay in the water for 8 hours without exerting any energy and wait for interesting subjects to drift or swim underneath. If you're staying near the surface, you don't need a camera that can handle the pressure of deep water. There are some point-and-shoot cameras that have been augmented for snorkeling. My favorite is the Nikon Action Touch. It has a very high quality 35/2.8 lens and autofocus above water. Underwater, you set the subject distance with a convenient dial. There is a nice big switch that turns the built-in flash on or off. The Action Touch sold for about $150 in the late 1980s. Nikon took it off the market and since then there haven't been any cameras like it. Basically the Japanese have decided that nobody is intelligent enough to manually focus a camera. So all the cheap underwater cameras are fixed focus underwater and I don't think any have nearly as high quality a lens or metering system as the Nikon. I exposed quite a bit of Fuji Velvia (ISO 50 slide film) in the Action Touch.

The Channel Islands offer some excellent opportunities to break out the cameras and burn a little film. All of the photos shown at this web site were taken at the Channel Islands by Mike Meagher, an old time diver and good friend of the crew's. If he could take these photos, so can you! Catalina, and San Clemente Islands often experience excellent visibility (by Soouthern California standards) with vis in the 60'(20m) up to 100'(34m) range. These islands are ideal for wide angle, existing light or existing light with fill photography. The kelp beds of Giant Bladder Kelp , Macrosystis, offers excellent vistas, and towers 60 to 100 feet above the bottom. Also, the bright orange Garibaldi , our state marine fish, is an excellent and cooperative subject. Just crack open a sea urchin with a dive knife and you'll have your subject eating out of your hand. Also, you may find an occasional Moray eel, another friendly yet non-lethal subject. And the region is covered with beautiful invertibrate life, including colorful

At the outer edges of your vision you can see the peak heaving itself skyward, and then as the shadow of the lip passes overhead, you quickly straighten, aiming hard for the the bottom.
There is silence in the instant before impact, and then heavy thunder lands close by on your left. But looking away, you focus on the oddly swirling water directly in front of you. The surface is pulling lower, pouring off the rock shelf to meet the incoming wave. At the last possible second, you twist completely over on your inside edge, banking so far to the right that you can`t see much of anything, straining to raise your head, as a great unseen force drives you firmly ito the deck, and the tightening arc of your turn throws you over the watery glaze of the reef and safely back up the face.
Leveling out, you skim across the vertical, upper third of the inward-bending wall. While far ahead, the inside bowl rises ominously, stretching out as it grows larger and thicker than it was when you first caught it. Now is the time to let go, and you unwind at nearly full power, the familiar soft chattering of your craft has become an unusual hissing, whispering sound, as you strain to hold a tight, high line. You wonder, as your velocity increases, if this is what a seabird might be feeling as it soars across a wave, along the upper edge, sensing the invisible pathways of maximum speed.
Fast approaching the inside section, you can see the turbid boils and lifeless, broken kelp that hint the end is near. But, without prompting, your vehicle begins a descent towad the surging trough, falling deeper into this coiling hole, the textured, backlit, bluegreen hues becoming dark, oily slick and hard. As if trapped in a slow motion dream without escape, you watch the massive roof of the tube propel itself outward and far ahead. You quickly tuck, but it nearly drags you off as it rushes by.
