The Mitten
Adapted and Illustrated by Jan Brett
Purchase this title now. Terrific tale, well-illustrated book! A translation into English of the well known and loved Ukrainian folk tale "Rukavychka" or "The Mitten" A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox. If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway AND... We don't want to spoil the storyline for you. The illustrations in this book are absolutely fantastic. very authentic - truly depict the Ukrainian spirit, traditional dress, traditional village home decor and similar. Jan Brett has a special thanks dedicated in the book to a Ukrainian friend - well any Ukrainian will see that this friend really spent some time advising Jan Brett on the authentic pictures!

The Ukrainian festival in London Did you go to the concert on the 15th April 2000? Tell us what you thought!
17th April 2000: Natalka Szkromyda: Saturday 15th April - London. London Astoria 2 on a wet, miserable usual English day. At 6:30pm crowds (well people) were already gathering outside the venue in anticipation of seeing Ukraine's no.1 rock band. The doors finally opened at about 7pm and the hoards were let loose. Vopli Vidopliasova came on stage at about 8pm - and what an impression they made (well, on me anyway!). What a band! What a show! So much energy! Not to mention the charisma oozing from frontman Skrypka! (My friend's comment about Oleh upon seeing him in the flesh was something like "Coooorrrrr, he's gorgeous!"). It took about 3-4 songs before the crowd really warmed up, but once they did there was no stopping them. They played a great set, most songs I knew, some I didn't but enjoyed them all. Vesna, Hlybyna, Halju Prychodj, Ljubov, Musika, Yura are the ones that stand out in my mind. And of course the manic Tantsi, which they saved for last! The one thing that I don't think I'll forget is one of the bouncer's coming up to me at the end of the night as we were leaving and excitedly saying, "Am I mad or did they play a cover version of Highway to Hell", the poor fella looked shocked!!!!  He was referring to Halju Prychodj, which does sound uncannilly like ACDC's well known hit.

46. Culture - Some Interesting Things About The Ukrainian People
Food. ukrainian cooking uses black pepper, red pepper, salt, bay leaf, parsley and dill (usually in spring and summer), garlic and onion.
http://www.ukrainepostalexpress.com/culture.htm
Ukraine Ukraine is a broad, flat land resembling Kansas in the USA. It nestles between the Carpathian Alps to the west, the Black Sea to the south and the Sea of Azov to the east. To the north is Belarus (part of the ancient Kingdom of Lithuania) and Russia proper. A peninsula, the Crimea, juts out into the Black Sea. The broad Dnipro river runs down through the center of the country. To the east of the Dnipro the land is flat and has rich soil ideal for farming. It is no wonder, then, that Ukraine is called "the bread basket of eastern Europe". To the west of the Dnipro, the land is more hilly and rolling, eventually becoming fairly rugged as the western part of Ukraine reaches into the foothills of the Carpathian Alps.
The Ukrainian People
Ukraine has long been a crossroads between Europe, Arabia and the Orient, and the modern Ukrainian Rus have acquired a strong admixture of Asiatic and Arabic blood: giving them an average height, slender build and fair complexion. Strictly speaking, the popular-image beefy Slavic people are found mostly in the western Ukraine (bordering on Poland, Hungary and the Slovak states) and in the north and northeast adjacent to Russia. For over a century, the official language was Russian. Since independence, Ukrainian is being promoted as the state language although Russian is still the most widespread, especially in the major cities. In villages people speak both Russian and Ukrainian. As a rule of thumb, you can manage by speaking Russian, although you may receive a bit of resistance from public officials who are being pressed to use Ukrainian.

http://www.volunteering.org.au/ukraine_i.html
UKRAINE Information for volunteers Geography: Climate: Culture: Currency: Ukraine grynia (UHA; sometimes spelled 'hryvnia') Exchange kiosks have the best rates and hotels generally the worst. Hard currency can be changed into grynia anywhere, but travellers cheques and credit cards are only accepted at certain banks and exchange offices in a few larger cities. For travelling round you need wads of cash. The most commonly accepted being the US dollar and German Deutschmark. Using hard currency in restaurants and retail shops has been officially banned, but many services aimed at foreign tourists are exempt from this ruling and expect hard currency. Food is ridiculously cheap in Ukraine, and accommodation isn't much more, especially outside Kiev. If you self-cater, share accommodation and rely solely on public transport you can reduce your costs to below US$30 a day. Haggling at the country's many food, art, souvenir and craft markets is expected and sometimes fierce. Electricity: Kiev is linked with most major European cities and some in North America with most international flights going to Boryspil International Airport in Kiev, about 40km south-east of the centre. The airport at Lviv, about 8km west of its centre, has connections with Warsaw, Prague, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Chicago. Entering by International trains is no bother as long as you have a visa. From Moscow to Kiev in 15 hours and to Lviv in 28 hours. Lviv has rail connections with most major Eastern European and Russian cities. Getting between major Ukrainian cities is best done by trains which are frequent, cheap and often a convenient night's journey. To save a few grynia, but with extra time, buses serve almost every city and small town and are best for short trips outside main cities. Buses are always dirty and overcrowded.

Culture
Quick Facts History Famine ... Humor Ukrainian history began with the rumble of hooves - Scythians dominated the steppes north of the Black Sea from the 7th to the 4th centuries BC, initiating centuries of outside political and cultural domination. Traces of Scythian culture can be found in Kiev's Caves Monastery, where the tombs contain superb goldwork depicting highly detailed animal and human forms. Following the Scythians, a series of invaders, including Ostrogoths, Huns and the Turko-Iranian Khazars, ruled areas of present-day Ukraine. The first people to unify and control the area for a long period were Scandinavians known as the Rus. The Rus took Kiev in 882 AD, and by the late 10th century the city was the centre of a unified state known as Kievan Rus, which stretched from the Volga west to the Danube and south to the Baltic. In 988, the Kievan Rus leader Volodymyr accepted Christianity from Constantinople, beginning a long period of Byzantine influence over Ukrainian politics and culture.By 1520 the Ottomans Empire controlled all of coastal Ukraine. Military devastation and plague had wiped out much of the population of the Ukrainian steppe by the 15th century, when the region became popular with runaway serfs and Orthodox refugees escaping more tightly controlled neighbouring domains. These people came to be known as kazaks (Cossacks), a Turkic word meaning outlaw, adventurer or freebooter. Ukrainian Cossacks eventually formed a state that, although officially under Polish and later Russian rule, was to a significant degree self-ruling, but 20 years later the state was divided between Poland and Russia.
