Hopes fade for Ukraine survivors
Ukrainian miners brought to the surface after Sunday's explosion DONETSK, Ukraine (CNN) A fire raging deep underground in a Ukrainian coal mine has thwarted efforts to rescue 10 miners trapped after an explosion which killed at least 36 and injured 43. Hopes are fading for those trapped as the blaze forced officials to call off the rescue efforts on Monday. The methane and coal-dust explosion ripped through a shaft in the Zasyadko mine near the centre of the eastern city of Donetsk on Sunday. "We can't continue to work down there until the fire has been localised," said Serhiy Smolanov, head of the rescue team on Monday. "At best it will take two days to isolate the fire." As distraught relatives of the missing men gathered at the entrance to the mine, Smolanov said the chances of rescuing those missing were almost zero. "A decision has been made to isolate the dangerous parts with concrete bulkheads, into which an inert gas will be pumped," he told Reuters.

Neglect 'caused' Ukraine mine fire
Ukraine's mines have one of the highest accident rates in the world DONETSK, Ukraine Two more people have died from a fire in a coal mine in Ukraine that officials said was probably caused by complacency and neglect, bringing the death toll to 35. Preliminary investigations found that a malfunctioning conveyor at the Ukraina mine in the eastern town of Ukrainsk on Sunday caused its line to catch fire 1,155 feet (350 metres) underground, filling the shaft with smoke, officials said. Seventy-nine miners were rescued. Rescue teams initially found the bodies of 33 workers, all of whom had died from suffocation. Another body was found on Monday and one miner died in hospital, trade union leader Viktor Vernykovskyi told The Associated Press. Nine miners remain in hospital of whom two are in critical condition, he said. Victims from the country's worst mine accident this year ranged in age from 21 to 72.
