Bookstore An Adoptive Family Support Organization Since the early 1990's the number of children from Eastern Europe being adopted by US citizens has grown from a handful to over 6,000 annually. For the vast majority of these families the addition of children has been a blessed event. And yet the media has focused much attention on the stories of some families who have struggled with those adoptions. The message that we hear time and time again is that families are not being adequately prepared during the pre-adoption phase and are not being sufficiently supported during the post-adoption phase. EEAC at EEADOPT.ORG
hopes to help conquer these challenges through support and education.

Ukraine's Kuchma facing calls to quit
Politicians and the media are uniting against President Kuchma KIEV, Ukraine Ukranian President Leonid Kuchma is under pressure to quit after opposition parties vowed to create a forum to oust him. The parties, in a rare show of unity, said they would create a Forum for National Salvation to press for his resignation and help organise further "Ukraine without Kuchma" street protests. Thousands of people have marched through major cities calling for Kuchma's resignation and demanding increased freedom of speech. Kuchma, who has drawn recent criticism from the West after six years of aid and support, has hit back at his detractors, saying they "threatened national security." ALSO Ukraine witnesses people power Kuchma has been seen as the man to revive the Ukraine after it suffered decades of mismanagement and corruption under the former Soviet Union regime. He has attracted $2 billion in aid since the Ukraine declared independence in 1992 making it the third-largest recipient of U.S. international aid.

Welcome to Ukraine
U kraine is situated in the south-eastern part of Central Europe and has its own territory, government, national emblem, flag and anthem. It borders on Russia, Byelorussia, Moldova, Slovakia, Roumania, Hungary and Poland on land and Russia, Georgia, Bulgaria, Roumania and Turkey on sea. The territory of Ukraine is mostly a level, treeless plain, calls "steppe". There are the Crimean Mountains in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians in the west, but they are not very high. Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods can still be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. Kiev and Cherkassy lie in the midst of Ukrainian southernmost pine forest. The main Ukrainian river is the Dnieper. It is one of the longest European rivers and one of the republic's main source of hydroelectric power. The Dnieper and its tributary the Ross had been the cradle of the Ukrainian and Russian people in time immemorial. The climate of the country is moderate. Winter is rather mild, with no severe frosts but with regular snowfalls everywhere except the south. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. The average winter temperature varies -20 Centigrade in the north to -3-5 in the south. Summer is quite hot and dry, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The fertile black soil is well watered in spring and autumn and gets plenty of sunshine in summer.

Search ends for Ukraine survivors
Ukrainian miners brought to the surface after Sunday's explosion DONETSK, Ukraine Rescuers have stopped looking for survivors of a blast that killed at least 36 miners in Ukraine's deadliest coal disaster this year. At least 10 miners were still missing after the Sunday morning methane gas explosion at Zasyadko mine near the eastern city of Donetsk. About 40 people were still hospitalised Monday, most of them with severe burns, according to a statement by the regional Worker's Safety Department, which oversees investigations into mine accidents. The explosion sparked an underground fire which is still burning. More than 1,000 rescue workers battled flames and searched for survivors through the night but found only bodies. About a dozen were pulled out on Sunday and another 17 overnight, police and miners' union officials said. Rescuers planned to pump the shaft with a gaseous compound to extinguish the fire, the safety department said.

Several survivors escaped through ventilation shafts in the mine. Another miner may be missing. The death toll in Ukrainian mines was at 116 for the first six months of the year the yearly average is 300 to 400. Power fight in Ukraine
Prime Minister Leonid Kuchma is fiercely opposed by Yulia Tymoshenko MOSCOW, Russia A former Ukrainian deputy prime minister facing corruption charges has announced her ambition to return to politics. Yulia Tymoshenko, who was sacked by President Leonid Kuchma, said she would accept any senior government position to carry out "key changes" including ending her nation's dependence on Russia. Relations between Russia and Ukraine have been strained recently over payments for gas supplies and a Russian call to place tariffs on imports of Ukrainian steel pipes - a key Ukrainian industry. Tymoshenko was sacked amid a scandal over Kuchma's alleged involvement in the murder of journalist Heorhiy Gongadze. Kuchma denies any part in the killing and despite repeated Ukrainian protest marches has refused to resign. Tymoshenko is currently recovering in hospital after a stay in remand prison ahead of a trial on corruption charges. The Supreme Court is to rule whether prosecutors can take her back to prison.
