History
Ukrainian history began with the rumble of hooves - Scythians dominated the steppes north of the Black Sea from the 7th to the 4th centuries BC, initiating centuries of outside political and cultural domination. Traces of Scythian culture can be found in Kiev's Caves Monastery, where the tombs contain superb goldwork depicting highly detailed animal and human forms. Following the Scythians, a series of invaders, including Ostrogoths, Huns and the Turko-Iranian Khazars, ruled areas of present-day Ukraine. The first people to unify and control the area for a long period were Scandinavians known as the Rus. The Rus took Kiev in 882 AD, and by the late 10th century the city was the centre of a unified state known as Kievan Rus, which stretched from the Volga west to the Danube and south to the Baltic. In 988, the Kievan Rus leader Volodymyr accepted Christianity from Constantinople, beginning a long period of Byzantine influence over Ukrainian politics and culture. By 1520 the Ottoman Empire controlled all of coastal Ukraine. Military devastation and plague had wiped out much of the population of the Ukrainian steppe by the 15th century, when the region became popular with runaway serfs and Orthodox refugees escaping more tightly controlled neighbouring domains. These people came to be known as

Tysovsky, who adapted the universal Scout principles to the needs and interests of Ukrainian youth. Unlike other Scout organizations of the world Ukrainian Scouting UKRAJINSKY PLAST-came into being to fulfill specific national aims. Born in 1911, during the decade of great social and political upheavals in Europe, Ukrainian Scouting underwent great trials in the first half-century of its existence thus developing typical and unique features of its own. The first Scout troops were formed in the largest city of Western Ukraine, Lviv in 1911. The Movement spread rapidly to the other cities and towns and by 1913 the first Supreme Scout Council had been formed and the first textbook published. Shortly after its founding, the organization had to face the dreadful storms of World War I, which brought about the collapse of the two powers occupying the Ukrainian territory, the Austro-Hungaria monarchy and the Czarist Russia. The indomitable will of the Ukrainian people for national freedom clearly crystallized itself in the formation of the Ukrainian National Republic in 1918.

Development and Distribution of the Jewish Settlement After the abolition of the Pale of Settlement, with the October 1917 Revolution, the civil war, and the disorders which accompanied it, more than 300,000 Jews left the Ukraine for other parts of the Soviet Union. Hence they formed only 5.4% of the total population and 22% of the urban population of the Ukraine in 1926, and 4.1% and 11.7% respectively in 1939. In 1926, 44% of them lived in 20 towns, each having over 10,000 Jews; while in 1939, 39% lived in the four cities of Odessa, Kiev, Kharkov, and Dnepropetrovsk. This intensified urbanization did not, however, give them predominance in the cities, since there also was a stream of Ukrainian peasants from the villages into the towns, which assumed a pronounced Ukrainian character. For the history of Ukrainian Jewry after World War I and in the Holocaust see Russia. top
Economic Situation
The migration of Jews from the western provinces of Poland to the Ukraine in the 16th century was mainly due to their economic role in the arenda business on a large or small scale. Hence, the Ukraine became a region where Jews managed a considerable proportion of the agricultural economy, administering complexes consisting of a number of estates, single estates, or a sector of their economy. Jews also engaged in

The Artificial Famine/Genocide in Ukraine 1932-33
Introduction
A Man-Made Famine raged through Ukraine, the ethnic-Ukrainian region of northern Caucasus, and the lower Volga River region in 1932-33. This resulted in the death of between 7 to 10 million people, mainly Ukrainians. This was instigated by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and his henchman Lazar Kaganovich. The main goal of this artificial famine was to break the spirit of the Ukrainian farmer/peasant and to force them into collectivization. The famine was also used as an effective tool to break the renaissance of Ukrainian culture that was occuring under approval of the communist government in Ukraine. Moscow perceived this as a threat to a Russo-Centric Soviet rule and therefore acted to crush this cultural renaissance in a most brutal manner. These series of pages are intended to educate the general populace about this little known event in Ukrainian history. InfoUkes hopes to add to this series of pages over time. InfoUkes Webmaster

The daily life of the Ukrainian people
http://user.tninet.se/~gdr662s
welcome to visit the reality in
UKRAINE
I won´t bored you out from here with some trivial, official facts about Ukraine that you can find elsewhere! This is simple how I experience the situation
Jan.- Feb.-99 I went down to Kiev after the media reports of the extremely cold winter, that poor people were freezing to death over there. A couple of friends here in Stockholm (no organization) gather up some warm clothes, shoes and money and then they kicked me down to check...
First of all - I divided this journey in two sites the other one is - if you wish - a visit in an orphanage(childhouse)
or
kinderheim (Deutsch)

in the city of Boyarka, a town 90 km south of Chornobyl.
I was living in some private flats with different families, so I had an unique opportunity to see and share their daily duties. ( Also hotels are extremly expensive.)
I was even, for a couple of days, living with a "rich" family who were separated from the rest of the "pack" with huge locks and other safety devices, but I leave them behind here, because I found them quite cynical.
But it might give you a rather one-sided description, then I choose to guide you around the poor and middle classes, but on the other hand - thats what interesting here.
