    Geography
Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada's land mass is 9 093 507 square kilometers, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones. In addition to its coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada has a third sea coast on the Arctic Ocean, giving it the longest coastline of any country. To the south, Canada shares an 8 891 kilometre boundary with the United States. To the north, the Arctic islands come within 800 kilometres of the North Pole. Canada's neighbour across the Arctic Ocean is Russia. Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans ... more
    Mountain Ranges
Canada's terrain incorporates a number of mountain ranges: the Torngats, Appalachians and Laurentians in the east; the Rocky, Coastal and Mackenzie ranges in the west; and Mount St. Elias and the Pelly Mountains in the north. At 5 959 metres, Mount Logan in the Yukon is Canada's tallest peak.

A short-lived independence from Russia (1917-1920) was followed by brutal Soviet rule that
engineered two artificial famines (1921-22 and 1932-33) in which over 8 million died, and World
War II, in which German and Soviet armies were responsible for some 7 million more deaths. Although independence was attained in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, true freedom remains elusive as many

The Ukraine, NATO, and the United States
Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Hunter was the featured speaker at the March 29 meeting of our Ukraine in Europe working group. Ukraine is a country in limbo. Its unique challenges and characteristics-geography, history, and identity-affect both the development of new security structures on the European continent, and remain relevant to classic geopolitical conceptions of stability. As a transitional state, the future of Ukraine may in the next decade determine the viability of the security system established by NATO's enlargement and its network of special partnerships. While NATO and its partners, including Ukraine and Russia, have developed a European architecture in which all nations benefit from an expanded security zone, geopolitical considerations still matter. Ukraine's geography places it at the nexus of many lingering security questions.

These geographic facts have made for easy movement of the population in this of the proverbial Russian Steppe which takes in the entire ukraine and stretches
    http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~grempel/courses/russia/lectures/02geography.html
    THE GEOGRAPHY OF RUSSIA
A geography provides the stage upon which the history of man is played. Geographic factors have always strongly influenced the development of nations and civilizations. They have frequently also contributed to their decline and fall. In earlier times geographic location helped certain societies to grow rapidly and become powerful. In our day the stubborn facts of geography may yet cause viable nations to decline and disintegrate.
The formerly abundant natural resources are running out, overpopulation, reckless abuse of the land, pollution in all of its putrid varieties are putting the survival of humanity in jeopardy. There are those who predict massive starvation within a century unless new supplies of food are found and exploited. Traditionally geography has been a primary motive for war and conquest. The good earth has been abused too long and is now threatening to take vengeance on the human animal.
In early times closeness to the sea helped the Phoenicians, Athenians, Romans, Portuguese, Spaniards, Dutch, English and Japanese to use it as a system of defense, avenue of communication and source of food. Today all nations may have to resort to the sea again for food to supplement the existing diminishing resources. Continental peoples like the Indians, Chinese and to some extent the Russians have turned away from the sea. Rivers may serve as boundaries or as highways.
The Rhine and Danube did the former for the Romans, the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri did the latter for the Americans. Rivers can also be means of irrigation. The Nile, Yangtze and Jordan are examples. The Syr Darya is doing the same for the Russians in the Tadjikistan and Uzbekistan desserts. Climates can be stimulating in the temperate zones and enervating in the tropics. Few people take long afternoon siestas in North America, Northern Europe or Russia. Good or bad soil, adequate or inadequate rainfall affect both the spirit and technology of a people.
