The people are very sociable and charming, and in fact, socialising plays a big part in Ukrainian life! Current WEATHER in Kiev
Ukrainians are famous for their humour, melodiousness and their artistic handicraft talents such as weaving, painting, wood-carving and ceramics. But mostly Ukrainians have a sensitivity for working with the land, which they love with a passion. Ukraine is mostly a level, treeless plain calls " steppe ". There are the Crimean Mountains in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians in the west, but they are not very high. Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods can still be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. Ukraine Introduction Geography People Government ... Transnational Issues Ukraine Introduction Top of Page Background: Richly endowed in natural resources, Ukraine has been fought over and subjugated for centuries; its 20th-century struggle for liberty is not yet complete. A short-lived independence from Russia (1917-1920) was followed by brutal Soviet rule that engineered two artificial famines (1921-22 and 1932-33) in which over 8 million died, and World War II, in which German and Soviet armies were responsible for some 7 million more deaths. Although independence was attained in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, true freedom remains elusive as many of the former Soviet elite remain entrenched, stalling efforts at economic reform, privatization, and civic liberties. http://www.send.org/ukraine/geography.htm
Ukraine lies in eastern Europe on the western border of Russia. To the north is Belarus, with the Black Sea to the south and Poland to the west. Although slightly smaller than the state of Texas, Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe-far behind Russia but just ahead of France. Two-thirds of Ukraine's people live in urban areas. Kiev, the capital, lies in north-central Ukraine, on both sides of the Dnieper River. It is the largest and oldest city in the country. Although the Carpathian mountains rise in western Ukraine and the Crimeans in the south, most of the country is "steppe" fertile, rolling, lightly-wooded plain. Ukraine was known as "the breadbasket of the USSR, " and more than half its land is dedicated to growing crops. The hottest month for inland Ukraine is July, when the daily high averages 23°C (73°F). January, the coldest month, averages minus 3°C (26º ) in the southwest and minus 8°C (18º F) in the northeast. Inland Ukraine gets most of its rainfall in June and July. Yalta and Odessa, on the shores of the Black Sea, experience a more temperate climate. December and January are the wettest months on the coast.
