HOME PAGE OUR CONCERTS OUR LECTURES BANDURA ... UKRAINIAN LINKS
THE BANDURA
The bandura is a unique Ukrainian musical instrument that dates back to the 7-th century. Originally it was used for accompaniment of epic folk ballads and occasional folk dances. It became immensely popular between the 15th and 18th centuries when traveling musicians, called Kobzars, entertained in towns and villages of Ukraine, while singing about the exploits of the Kozaks (Ukrainian Warriors). Over the years, the bandura acquired more and more strings and became a fully chromatic instrument with switches for changing tonalities. The Bandura is tought as a solo and ensemble instrument in music schools and conservatories in Ukraine. During the Soviet occupation of Ukraine, bandura fell into disfavor because it was the carrier of Ukrainian national history and culture, which, according to the communist master plan was to be submerged into a single Soviet mainstream. From a musical perspective, the bandura unifies accoustic principles of both the lute and the harp. This produces a sound that is emphatic and gentle, resembling that of a harpsichord, but with a wider range of dynamics and total control. More about bandura you can find on "The Bandura - a Historical Overview"
The Master of the Bandura
Professor Vasyl Herasymenko In responce to the shortage of instruments, Prof. Herasymenko began constructing his own. In 1950 he finished his first bandura, traditionally made by carving out sycamore wood. It was small, with diatonic bass strings and a two-octave treble string range. It was a good temporary solution, as there were no means of mass bandura production at that time in Ukraine. This successful venture into bandura construction convinced Prof. Herasymenko to continue his pursuit of a more versatile instrument.

Social Landscape
Country of Traditions History
Perhaps when you think of Ukraine, you visualize a quaint European village like the one in this photo. You're right! Hundreds of villages like this dot the Ukrainian countryside. Someone interested in just a few weeks of relaxation might well choose such a place to visit. But SEND International and our many prayer and financial partners are interested in more than a quiet getaway! We want to help the evangelical churches of Ukraine reach the 50 million people who live there. This site offers you a fascinating overview of Ukraine, including social, cultural, historical, geographical and economic facts, you will also find great detail about the ministry God has called SEND missionaries to in this beautiful part of the world. Here we reveal SEND's creative strategy for ministry in Ukraine, and you'll discover ways you can partner with us to make a powerful impact for God in Ukraine and former Soviet countries. Social Landscape Ukraine has almost as many people as France, Italy, or the United Kingdom, but neighboring Russia has three times as many people! During the days of the tsars and the subsequent Soviet era, government policies of land development and "Russification" drastically changed the ethnic make-up of Ukraine. Ukrainians traveled east to "homestead" in Far East Russia, and ethnic Russians were moved into Ukraine in order to weaken Ukrainian nationalist feeling. Today ethnic Ukrainians make up about 73 percent of Ukraine's population.

Alumni Club Alumni On Their Experience Latest from Alumni Alumni On Their Experience at Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute HUSI offered me a uniquely gratifying opportunity to meet students from all walks of life and share intellectually and culturally enriching experiences both inside and outside the classroom. I will always treasure the friendships I made and the memories of evening seminars, musical events, field trips, and other social functions. In fact, I had such a wonderful time that I went back, and I must say that the second time was even more memorable than the first.
Andrew Hogan (USA), HUSI-88/89
My summer school experience opened up vistas that after many years had a wonderful impact on my life. It was energizing, intellectually compelling, a socially rewarding! No better way to spend a summer. Fr. Borys Gudziak (USA), Rector, Lviv Theological Academy. Ph.D., HUSI-77
The HUSI stands out as the most rewarding and most unforgettable experience I have had. Cool language, dynamic course syllabus, qualified instructors, supportive stuff if this is what you are looking for in a language program, you do not have to look any further. And as a wonderful bonus, you will also get a diverse extracurricular cultural program that not only immerses you completely into the world of the Ukrainians, but also makes the summer institute a very pleasurable and enriching experience. I am not just recommending this program, I urge everyone, and especially college and graduate students with serious ambitions, to put the HUSI on their priority list for this summer.

Dear ArchitectureWeek, On my round-the-world bicycle tour, I passed through the south of Ukraine and stopped at the lively town of Kherson. It sits on the Dnper River delta as it empties into the Black Sea and is an important part of the former soviet shipping network, linking the Mediterranean Sea to the industrial cities in the heart of Ukraine. Fifty miles (80 kilometers) southwest of the town on a tiny island in the delta, lies the Adziogol Lighthouse , an important beacon for ships navigating the tangle of sandbanks. Built in 1911, this steel structure is a fine example of how elegance and ingenuity can be added to an otherwise utilitarian construction. Designed by Vladimir Schuchov , the lighthouse appears, from a distance, to be a very slender column topped by a beacon. The main 223-foot- (68-meter-) high structure is a light circular steel web, tapering through a curve to the small beacon housing. Slender vertical members wrap around the column in a hyperbolic paraboloid, forming an open helical mesh. This gives the appearance of transparency from a distance but complexity and interest when viewed from passing boats. At the center of the web is a steel stair tower, giving a sense of solidity to the otherwise delicate structure. The base of the tower meets the sea in a haze of bushes and sea spray, almost hiding the keeper's white-washed cottage. The adventure of getting to this building was well worth it. While there is some disappointment in its rusting state, it is clearly a cut above many utilitarian, former soviet buildings.

Postcard from Ukraine Bus stops in Ukraine. Photography by Matt Bridgestock. Dear ArchitectureWeek, Heading eastward on my round-the-world bicycle tour, I passed through villages in southwest Ukraine. Here, the humble bus stop has been elevated to a position of civic pride and collective creative outlet. These colorful bus stops appear at regular intervals along the road and provide delight and orientation in the flat, open landscape. The southwest Ukrainian farming villages are on the edge of the former soviet empire. They are laid out on a grid system, and very few of them have a central civic space like those in Western European villages. The main road is often the village's only central public space. Perhaps this is one reason the bus stop takes on special significance. The bus shelters perform several functions. Hitchhiking is a common form of transport, and drivers often stop here to offer lifts. The shelter can also be distant from the village it serves, so drink stalls appear. These, in turn, attract more people to chat and rest, making the bus stop a destination in itself. The bus shelters vary in style but have common elements. They are generally covered spaces, with plenty of shade from extended roofs, and a set of toilets to the rear. The intricate patterns of colored tiles make these simple buildings extraordinary. The bright patterns and pictures vary but all have a distinctly Russian constructivist tone. This style of angular, abstracted, and vivid images is used throughout the region. There are strong patriotic overtones, with many of the images depicting farmers, fishermen, and surveyors in heroic poses.

FRANKO ON SHEVCHENKO He was a peasant's son and has become a prince in the realm of the spirit. He was a serf, and has become a Great Power in the commonwealth of human culture. He was an unschooled layman, and has shown to professors and scholars newer and freer paths. He sighed for ten years under the Russian soldiery, and has done more for the freedom of Russia than ten victorious armies. Fate pursued him cruelly throughout life, yet could not turn the pure gold of his soul to rust, his love of humanity to hatred, or his trust in God to despair. Fate spared him no suffering but did not stint with pleasures, which welled up from a healthy spring of life. And it withheld till after death its best and costliest prize undying fame and the ever new delight which his works call forth in millions of human hearts. - Ivan Franko, May 12, 1914.
