Ukraine's performers participate in first Days of Ukrainian Culture in Moscow by Roman Woronowycz
Kyiv Press Bureau MOSCOW - Ukrainian music resounded in the concert halls of Moscow on October 24-29 as the first annual Days of Ukrainian Culture in Russia took place, with the appearance of many of Ukraine's musical and dance stars. The festival included traditional Ukrainian folk music and dance as well as opera, ballet and pop music performances, and even appearances by renowned Ukrainian humorists. The series of concerts and an international symposium was a tangible result of the "big treaty" on friendship and cooperation signed by the presidents of Russia and Ukraine in May, which included stipulations for cultural exchanges. Yevhen Kushniarov, head of the administration of Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma, said on October 29 in Kyiv that the five-day series of programs was a success. "There are many Ukrainians in Russia, and the Days of Ukrainian Culture is a great propaganda tool for Ukraine," explained Mr. Kushniarov. "We must support the cultural needs of the Ukrainians who live in Russia." The effort, co-sponsored by the ministries of culture of both countries, was not the first such affair in Moscow. During Soviet times there were days dedicated to celebrations of ethnic cultures of the Soviet Union, including Ukrainian, explained Oleksander Semchenko of Ukraine's Ministry of Culture offices in Moscow. He said that in addition, after perestroika the Ukrainian Youth Club, an organization of Ukrainian students studying in Moscow, of which he was a member, organized Ukrainian cultural festivals on a twice-yearly basis. He said those efforts died with the economic downturn that developed in Russia after 1991 and the organization's demise.

Ukraine is growing as a popular destination for tourists and Travellers Volunteers alike, and Kiev is rapidly becoming the city to see in Eastern Europe. It's even beginning to compete with Moscow in that respect. Since its independence, Ukraine, and Kiev in particular, has opened up and become an extremely friendly, hospitable country. The people are very sociable and charming, and in fact, socialising plays a big part in Ukrainian life! Current WEATHER in Kiev
Ukrainians are famous for their humour, melodiousness and their artistic handicraft talents such as weaving, painting, wood-carving and ceramics. But mostly Ukrainians have a sensitivity for working with the land, which they love with a passion. Ukraine is mostly a level, treeless plain calls " steppe ". There are the Crimean Mountains in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians in the west, but they are not very high. Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods can still be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. CULTURE
National traditions and rituals
Ukrainian national traditions, customs, and oral folk literature reflect Old Ukrainian pre-Christian, and Christian cultures. The rituals derive from the folk calendar, religious celebrations like Christmas, Easter and Whitsuntide, Ivana Kupala (St.John's Eve), New Year, and the autumn folk festivals dedicated to the end of the agricultural work.
Ukrainians have typical wedding habits, family traditions connected with crafts and jobs (the first day of sowing, beginning of the harvest), along with traditional symbols (straw didukh, decorated pysanka Easter eggs, holy water, and traditional dishes like kutia (boiled wheat with honey and poppy seed), paskha Easter bread, varenyky (something like ravioli), and pancakes. The rituals include folk dances, carols, fortune-telling, and blessing with water.
Literature
The literature of Kyivan Rus' is represented by numerous Old Churtch Slavonic documents. About 1500 manuscripts have been found so far, among them wellknown autobiographies of the first prelates of Rus', Olha and Volodymyr; biographies of the great martyrs Borys and Hlib; the first collection of laws, the Ruska Pravda; historical chronicle Povist' vrem'ianykh lit (Tale of Bygone Years); and Slovo o polku Ihorevim (Lay of the Host of Ihor). The Middle Ages also left a legacy of hundreds of dumy (historical songs), lyrical folk poetry, and tales.
The first printings shops appeared in the sixteenth century and during the next two centuries thirteen printing houses were established in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Lviv, Lutsk, Kremenets, Uman, etc. The first Ukrainian newspaper Gazette de Leopol was first published in 1776.

CULTURE SHOCK: UKRAINE ranks as one of the best installments of the Culture Shock series. Straightforward and very thorough, it gave this American reader a helpful introduction to Ukrainian culture. Written by an American, Meredith Dalton, who lived in Kyiv for some time, the book tells expatriates what they need to know for a smooth transition to living and working in Ukraine. Ukraine is a very different country from the U.S., and things that Westerners would see as corruption and inefficiency are normal matters there. Dalton is very frank about how to deal with Ukrainian bureaucracy, how to maintain patience, and how to refrain from comparing everything to life back home. While she emphasizes to the reader that Ukraine may be a difficult and sometimes infuriating country for outsiders, she is always respectful of the Ukrainian culture and way of life. This is one of the few books in the Culture Shock series that are so admirably dedicated to preventing culture shock.

LANGUAGE
Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine. That is, it is the official language of Ukrainians who represent the major part of the state population. Approximately 10 to 13 million people in the Diaspora (e.g., those living in Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, the US, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Australia and other countries) speak Ukrainian. The Ukrainian language originates from ancient times. The brothers Cyril and Methodius founded the Slav written language. From the time of Rus in the 10th and 11th centuries, the principle phonetic and grammatical features of the Ukrainian language began to form. With the appearance of the “Eneida”, written by Ivan Kotliarevskyi (1798), the new period of development of the Ukrainian literary language began on a popular basis. In the works of Taras Shevchenko, the most famous Ukrainian poet (1814-1861), the language was consolidated as one that had all means for servicing the most important sphere of social and cultural life and unlimited means for further enrichment and stylistic versatile improvement. The basis of the contemporary Ukrainian language is formed by the Middle Dnieper variety of the Southeast dialect - the most unified and the first among others with respect to the number of native speakers.

CULTURE
Literature Ancient Ukrainian literature was sprung from sermons, legends, chronicles, and warrior epos in the days of the Kyiv State. The original preaching literature is presented by impressive political treatise of Ilarion, the priest of the church at the court of Great Prince Yaroslav the Wise at Berestov (who later became the first Metropolitan of Kyiv and all-Ukraine Rus). This work, “The Speech on Law and Blessing” was proclaimed in the 11th century in the Desiatynna Church in honor and for the glory of Prince Volodymyr the Great who joined Kyiv Rus with the Christian world. “The Song of Igor’s Campaign”, written by an unknown author, is considered the most famous poetic work of the 12th century. This work is based on the historical story about the campaign of Igor, Prince of Novgorod-Siversky, his brother Vsevolod, son Volodymyr and nephew Sviatoslav against the polovtsians, his defeat and flight from captivity. From the Middle Ages, the wonderful samples of folk-poetic works has appeared, which were in the form of historical ballads, songs, lyrics, genre poetry, and folk poetry. They reflect life and the manner of people, as well as historical events and activities of people. At present, the literature of the 16-17th centuries is especially attractive. It includes the works of the period of the national-liberation struggle and the struggle for renewal of Ukrainian statehood.

http://www.plhs.esu3.org/hs/student/apfall00/ukraine/culture.htm
Culture The Ukriane is a country deeply rooted in its culture, more so than most people in America. American culture is really a combination of cultures from many different counties whose immigrants moved here long ago. The Ukraine on the other hand, still has its traditional culture from hundreds of years ago. Food The Ukrainian traditional foods are very unique when compared to western culture. It is however, comparable to Russian cuisine. The most famous and most popular of Ukrainian dishes is Borsch. Borsch is popular is many slavic countries, but it origins can be traced to the Ukriane. Borsch is a semi-sweet tasting vegtable soup with beets serving as its primary ingredient. The Ukraine is also famous for its great breads. The country is situated in what is known as the "breadbasket" region. In many European countries, Ukrainian bread is so admired that it is considered a delecacy and served is upperclass resturuants. Holidays Perhaps the best way to opserve Ukrainian Culture is to examine how they celebrate the Holiday Season. Interestingly Christmas is celebrated on January 7th rather than December 25th. Apparently thousands of years ago the entire world celebrated Christmas on January 7th due to a difference in calanders. Becuase the Ukrainian people value tradition so much in their lives, many Ukriainians still celebrate the holiday on its old date. During the evening meal on Christmas eve, often wisps of straw are strewn accross the table. This is to remind the people of Jesus's simple beginnings in a manger. There are many other traditions, but these are usually family traditions and not specifically Ukrianian in nature.
