Ukraine
Culture
For decades, the Western world perceived Ukraine as simply a part of Russia. But borscht, painted eggs and many of the famous Cossack song and dance traditions originated in Ukraine. Western Ukrainians consider themselves to be 100% Ukrainian and the vanguard of their culture, speaking their language and trumpeting their nationalism. In the east, where over 10 million ethnic Russians live, nationalism is less intense, and most people speak Russian. Ukrainian, like Russian and Belarusian, is an Eastern Slavic language. It's arguably the closest of the three to the original 9th century Slavonic used in Kiev before the more formal Church Slavonic from Bulgaria was introduced with Christianity in the 10th century. Despite being watered down by Russian and Polish and being banned by Tsar Alexander II in 1876, the Ukrainian language persevered and is becoming more widespread. It was adopted as the country's official language in 1990, though Russian is understood by almost everyone. The origins of Ukraine's national literature go back to medieval Slavic chronicles such as the 12th century Slovo o polku Ihrevim The Tale of Ihor's Armament ). The beginnings of modern Ukrainian literature stem from mid-18th century wandering philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda, the 'Ukrainian Socrates'. Skovoroda wrote poems and philosophical tracts in Ukrainian, aimed at the common person rather than the elite. Taras Shevchenko, an ardent nationalist who was born a serf in 1814 and became a national hero, was the first major writer in Ukrainian. His work launched a golden age of Ukrainian literature. The most talented and prolific writer of the early 20th century was Ivan Franko, whose work spanned fiction, poetry, drama, philosophy and children's stories. Many writers made the Soviet occupation their subject, and many suffered for it. Vasyl Stus'

Country Info Ukraine Introduction Ukraine General Data Ukraine Maps Ukraine Culture ... Ukraine Time and Date Ukraine Culture Back to Top Ukrainians take pride in their cultural tradition, which is part of a broader Slavic culture but retains a distinctive national flavour. In the countryside, outdoor festivals feature brightly coloured folk costumes, dance, and traditional music. Urban life is enriched by a large number of performing arts facilities and other cultural institutions created during the Soviet era. Ukraine’s geographical location between Europe and Asia meant that much of its early culture was a synthesis of Eastern and Western influences. When a developed culture emerged in the medieval, or Kievan, period, the influence of the Byzantine Empire was paramount. In early modern times, major European currents such as the Renaissance reached Ukraine via Poland. A cultural dichotomy today exists within Ukraine, with western regions reflecting European, especially Polish, influence, while in the eastern regions the impact of Russian culture is evident. After the Mongol destruction of Kievan Rus in the 13th century, literary activity in Ukraine declined. A revival began in the late 16th century with the introduction of printing, the Reformation ferment, and the advance of the Counter-Reformation into Polish-dominated Ukrainian lands. The Union of Brest-Litovsk (1596), which united several million Ukrainian and Belarusian Orthodox believers with Rome, stimulated an exceedingly rich polemical literature, with the Apocrisis of the pseudonymous Khrystofor Filalet and the anonymous Perestoroha on the Orthodox side and the Antirizis of Ipaty Poty in the Uniat camp. The most distinguished and prolific polemicist was the Orthodox Ivan Vyshensky, whose ornate style combines Church Slavonic with vernacular elements.

Ukraine has not perished, neither her glory, nor freedom,
Upon us, fellow-Ukrainians, fate shall smile once more.
Our enemies will vanish, like dew in the morning sun,
And we too shall dwell, brothers, in a free land of our own. We'll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom,
And we'll show that we, brothers, are of the Kozak nation. We'll stand together for freedom, from the Sian to the Don,
We will not allow others to rule in our motherland.
The Black Sea will smile and grandfather Dnipro will rejoice,
For in our own Ukraine fortune shall flourish again. Our persistence and our sincere toils will be rewarded

Clothing:
  • Business attire in Ukraine is generally formal and conservative.
  • Adoption Center clothing should be casual, yet conservative. Jeans are fine.
  • For court appearances, clothing should be business casual. Slacks and a shirt with a collar for men (ties optional); conservative dresses for women.
  • Visit to orphanage, walking in Ukraine, or any other day, clothing can be whatever is comfortable. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts, and dresses are all fine.
  • Ukrainians can be seen wearing a variety of all types and colors of clothing; however, most women prefer to wear dresses and skirts more than pants.
  • Ukrainian clothing is not quite as sturdy as American clothing. Most Ukrainian clothing is washed by hand and hung out to dry. They usually will not survive washing machines back home.
Etiquette:
  • Placing your thumb between your first two fingers is the same as flipping someone off.
  • Shaking hands with a person over the threshold of a door is considered bad luck by some Ukrainians.
  • If you give flowers to someone, be sure that you give an uneven number of flowers. An even number of flowers is only given to people in mourning.

A country whose state song declares that 'Ukraine has not yet died' might not seem the most uplifting destination, but don't let that deter you. The country rewards travelers with hospitable people, magnificent architecture and kilometers of gently rolling steppe. Ukraine is a major player in the region's economy, though for every smoggy industrial city there are dozens of villages with picket fences, duck ponds and overloaded horse carts, where time seems to stand still.
Ukraine has its share of the thoroughly modern, but even the capital, Kiev, is replete with Gothic, Byzantine and Baroque architecture and art - reminders of the many foreign overlords who've left their mark on the country. Nearly every city and town has its centuries-old cathedral, and many have open-air museums of folk architecture, caves stuffed with mummified monks, and exquisite mosaics wherever you look. The food sticks to your ribs and the bandura tunes lodge themselves in your brain for weeks. It's that ideal vacation at grandma's you never got to take - if grandma was a Cossack, that is.

    UKRAINE'S
    TRYPILIAN CULTURE
Introduction Trypilian culture (Trypil'ska kultura) is the Ukrainian name given to a Neolithic population whose culture once flourished on the ethnically Ukrainian territories of present-day Ukraine, Moldova, and the northeast area of Romania. The parallel Romanian name is "Cucuteni" culture. Both these names derive from the villages where artifacts of this culture were first discovered in Ukraine and in Romania, respectively. The Trypilia site is near Kyiv (Kiev), the capitol of Ukraine, and the Cucuteni site is near Iasi in Romania, near the Moldovian border. In her book (ref *1) , Marija Gimbutas stated: "Tripolya (sic) is one of the best explored and richest cultures of Old Europe, a true civilization in the best meaning of the word."
The Trypilian population's primordial deity was female, and their culture developed rich and complex artistic symbols rooted in their religious beliefs based on the Great Goddess and her various aspects as Giver-of-Life, Wielder of Death, and Regeneratrix. This symbolic system reflects the natural, yet "represents cyclical, non-linear, mythical time."
